Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'ground clearance' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ground clearance' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean roads, no salt' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The only issue I run into occasionally is deep snow, but after a few hours the roads are usually cleaned up and good to go.

I run summer tires on my porsches, and wouldn't chance them in the snow.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Got a fresh coating of the white stuff here in Southern Massachusetts. I'm curious if those that experience similar store your 996 "permanently" for the winter or will take out on a "warm" day in winter?
G
Park it for the winter duration. People drive like idiots around in the winter. Plus liquid salt and salt pellets every where on the roads. I have a better winter car.
I store both of mine all winter, one on and one under my 4 post lift, both on battery maintainers. I run summer tires on my porsches, and wouldn't chance them in the snow. I have a land crusier for inclement weather.
I store all three, not too much choice around here. Snow starts in late October some years, and is around until April, at least. My winter beater is a '17 GTI with some tasty mods, so I can endure the wait. Before all you Florida, So. California, Texas types start, the roads up here almost make up for the enforced hibernation. Very well maintained, twisty and many elevation changes.
I put winter wheels and tires on my 911 (and the 911s that I owned before this one), so inclement weather doesn’t bother me. I have no problem driving the Porsche in snow. The only issue is ground clearance. In deep snow, I’d rather drive my truck or my wife’s Audi SUV.
I drove mine to work today in South Jersey; well below freezing. I try to avoid "active slop" in the winter. Otherwise, just make sure its warmed up before letting it rip.
If it was just snow, I would drive it all year round. The salt is the problem, pretty much an acidic brine that sticks to everything and is almost impossible to wash off in the important areas ( underneath the car, radiators such)
Driving the car year round rain sleet snow would be betterIMO because the rain will rinse the brine off as best it can. Driving the car, washing and putting it away to let the corrosion begin is definitely bad. I have a wash bay and a power washer with an underbody wand and am particular about rinsing cars underneath for 5 to 7 minute after snow events. Putting the car on the lift after it dries lets me know how much salt is really left and its quite a bit.
The corrosion doesnt stop once the car has dried with these new melting concoctions, they just keep corroding. Maybe a dry day with no large puddles and good possibility after a rain has rinsed the road down.
Owning 2 of these cars from the west coast and 2 from the rust belt, there is a world of difference working on them. They are definitely more corrosion resistant than some cars, but the ones I have from the rust belt are not very pristine.
I bought my C4 to be a winter car. So your poll doesn't have a category for those of us that just use it as a car. Minus 20 degrees and sheets of ice? No problem....
Does anyone get the under carriage sprayed with any type of oil to protect for corrosion from road salts and sands?
I know this is common to do with trucks, not sure on 911's.
Goughary I respect your daily driving and plan to do the same. I bought a full waxoyl kit (cavities, underbody) from Rovers North and have used it on all my cars, both vintage creampuffs and daily drivers. I don't see the kit on their site anymore but the constitutent parts are still there. I beleve Wurth and 3M make similar but this is what I ended up with. Extremely nice stuff, notable that the hardware is made in Germany and Switzerland.
Vermont winters are too tough...road salt, too much snow, etc. My C2 stays in my heated basement on a battery maintainer. I have an all wheel drive Mini for winter duty.
I don't drive my toys during the winter simply because I have other "daily drivers", so good for you Bill for enjoying your 996 year-round. But washing off the road salt doesn't take care of the problem from driving on wet or dry salty roads. When it's dry all that dust you see on the road is a lot of dried salt, and the salt dust goes everywhere air goes. So you don't really get rid of the salt by washing it off. I'm not suggesting not to wash it off......of course you should. Also not trying to change your mind, just pointing out that salt dust goes into every corner and crevice on a car, i.e. places you can't get to.
I may be too OCD.

Mine is a DD. Switch wheels and tires and she handles super well in the snow and ice. The only issue I run into occasionally is deep snow, but after a few hours the roads are usually cleaned up and good to go.
