Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have an old Land Rover so am used to the smell of gear oil, each change is 2 axles, 2 gear boxes, 2 drive joints and an over drive all in all about 10 - 12 litres changes are supposed to be every 3000 miles or 6 months

Hell I used sun screen in a differential to get me out of a jam on a jeep once.

Others have used valvoline or M1 synthetic with good results.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I used OEM Porsche fluid a few weeks back. Made a good bit of difference in the shifting.
Others have used valvoline or M1 synthetic with good results.
I would venture to guess darn near anything would work fine. Hell I used sun screen in a differential to get me out of a jam on a jeep once.
Thanks I will swap it for full synthetic - I will leave the after sun for now - Not sure what I can get yet looks like castrol can I assume GL5 is okay spec wise..
I have 3 quarts of Motul showing up Friday to see if that will change my whiny gearbox situation. I'll post up any observations about notchy shifting and the other woes that have bothered some of the other non-OEM gearbox oil users in the past.
The Motul seems to have quieted things back down. Interesting.
Damn, I'd forgotten how bad gear oil smells. The wife was not too happy with the drain pan in the garage where she was hanging laundry.
Haha when I saw this thread I was going to jump on here and talk about the smell.
It stuck around my garage for days after I changed mine.
I told my wife it was the smell of success since I did it without spilling a huge amount of it on the floor.

I'm almost ready to do this now on the Porsche just waiting for the oil & new bolt & seal to make delivery.
