As the technology ages, like all technology things, they'll probably need to be changed/upgraded eventually.

I swapped the stock unit for a 9" floating screen.

On wireless carplay - not sure how useful that really is as the phone tends to eat battery power while using maps/ GPS - so not convinced you need wireless.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay going to try this again. Nearly got a fine for phone use the other day, need to bite the bullet and replace the head unit in my car. Anyone have experience / review of Alpine vs Sony vs ? Any thoughts appreciated
To be honest, they're all much the same. Work out which features are important to you and go from there.
I used Alpine purely because the chasis was short. If I really wanted could have placed an amp behind the unit (hence the design of the short body) It had Carplay and provision for two cameras which were the selling points for me. I would suggest replacing the rear speakers and upgrading the speakers in the doors. At least the larger bass.
Happy shopping
Out of interest, aren't things like the trip computer in the original radio? Not sure what else is in there. Also, don't you also need to find a way to hook up to the MOST optical system?
Not sure, hence the question. However a lot of the models talk about 'plug n play ability with things like steering wheel buttons and connection to optic cabling
Alpine model number ?
I swapped the stock unit for a 9" floating screen. I really like it.

My car does not have steering wheel controls nor Bose, although I think the below is what you may need?
(hopefully the link works - if not I searched for "porsche 997 2-din installation") Some time on Rennlist will guide you through

@Harsh
Just remembered the mob that I got my past kits from was Euro Motorspeed
Aliexpress do android/carplay units which are direct fit, cosmetically integrated and plug compatible as far as I can tell. Including MOST, but dash functions like trip computer probably not. Seems to be superior to the very faulty pccm+ for a tenth of the price.
Long threads on uk911 and rennlist on them, generally positive. Worth a look at least.
Totally different, but I just put a single din similar unit in a w124 and it was a three minute plug compatible install and works great for <$100!
What's faulty about the official PCCM+? I was dead against going the outrageous price of the official way, but had decided I'm going to get the real deal. I don't think I'll be selling my 987 anytime soon. I have an aftermarket Sony one in and it just doesn't look right nor work right. It doesn't respond to inputs, etc. very well at all. I've looked online and every other option seems a compromise to me. As the technology ages, like all technology things, they'll probably need to be changed/upgraded eventually. At least if you go official, you would hopefully get "some" support from Porsche.
The price is outrageous. I also still went for it for the same reasons in my 996 - totally transformed the car, and it looks factory. I hid the external box behind my radio however - the 997 version doesn't need that thankfully - although still no wireless carplay. On wireless carplay - not sure how useful that really is as the phone tends to eat battery power while using maps/ GPS - so not convinced you need wireless.
I have heard some people have problems with the volume when using the MOST optical amps. This still seems a little bit of a dark art. Last I heard is you should turn up the volume on the original radio before you swap over the devices. A friend of mine in her 997.1 CAB is definitely happy with the upgrade, although does have a volume issue when the roof is down. I guess this could also be rectified by removing the MOST system and putting in a normal amp, although not sure how much work this is.
If your car has a 3.0 or 3.1 PCM then the easiest way to get CarPlay, Nav/maps, phone, front & rear cameras is to fit an AUTOABC card into the radio, its takes a few hours and a few more to fit the cameras but it works perfectly. Works in-conjunction with Most / Bose sound. The radio works with all normal functions and to activate the Carplay you only need to press the INFO button for a few sec’s and the screens changes to the carplay screen with all of the std functions..
Just realised that mine is a 987.1 not .2, meaning I would have to try and get a used PCM 2.1 instead. Does anybody know whether the method described by WB997 works with PCM 2.1?
Google how to check Porsche PCM version on youtube, also here is a link to the Autoabc site. Remember if you decide to order you must order the correct version,, 3.0 or 3.1 or 4.0, they are not interchangeable. Also look for discount offers they can be anywhere between 10>20%.
I’ll try and shoot a video on how it operates tomorrow.

It looks like this method only works for 9x7.2 vehicles or later. I'm sure it'll come, but this might explain why Porsche hasn't bothered with their own official head unit replacement for 9x7.2 vehicles yet.
I'm looking at the Alpine ILX-507A head unit. Has anyone fitted this unit and did you bypass the Bose factory amp?

My car didn't have Bose, so no, but to keep the Bose, you'll need something like this -->

There's definitly multiple kits to choose from!
Installer recommends bypassing the Bose amp as the head unit has 50W output. It also has parametric EQ. The fascia surround is available as a separate item and there is a harness to connect the steering wheel controls. Will be used for Carplay and Nav more than as an audio upgrade I suspect.
Does anyone have this unit fitted? Would love your thoughts and or a pic!
