Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been seeing a lot more posts about the indian or chinese companies that make the same items for Gucci and Kmart.............a lot of times there is no difference other than the marketing/branding

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anyone have thoughts/experience on the best ATF for 997.1 Tiptronic ? The price difference between Porsche recommended and OEM alternatives is like $40 per litre

POST 2Original post

Might be best to post the actual required fluid specification so there is no confusion. Last Tip I did I used Castrol Transmax Z but would need to confirm the required spec is the same for your application before I recommend it.  Well regarded, readily available and about 100bucks for 4 litres.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is what I get when I punch in the catalog number. This is in US dollars and I need at least 6 litres. If it was one litre would probably run the Porsche Genuine Part. I have been seeing a lot more posts about the indian or chinese companies that make the same items for Gucci and Kmart.............a lot of times there is no difference other than the marketing/branding

POST 4Original post

If you knew if it was DEXRON III or DEXRON IV or whatever the specification listed in the manual, it would be really easy to find a suitable fluid locally and cheaply.

POST 5Original post

just replaced the tip fluid in my 996 - after research and reading i went with penrite at-fs. time will tell i guess but it drives much better than it did before ... and medium term it'll get a manual conversion anyway ...

POST 6Original post

I had mine rebuilt through Autowerks and I used Amsoil as I have always used it with great success. It feels amazing!

POST 7Original post

I'd be more concerned with meeting the correct Porsche/ZF spec than the name on the bottle. A quality OEM fluid that meets the exact specification should be fine, but I wouldn't gamble on a generic ATF just to save a few dollars. Good to know, thanks for sharing. It's always helpful to hear from someone who's actually running Amsoil with good results. Was the improvement mainly smoother shifts, or did you notice better torque converter lock-up and overall drivability too?
