Do I just use bottled water and bring it back to MIN or should I use 50/50 coolant and water mix?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Looking for some advice/reassurance on my 996 Turbo.
I’ve noticed that the coolant level in the expansion tank is now sitting roughly ¼–½ inch below the MIN mark when the car is completely cold and on level ground.
The car has not overheated, there are no warning lights, and it drives completely normally.
The car was recently in the workshop for an engine oil and filter change, but the coolant system wasn’t worked on.
One thing worth mentioning is that the engine coolant lines have previously been pinned, so I’m aware of the usual 996 Turbo coolant-line concerns.
I’m wondering:
Is being slightly below MIN something I should be concerned about?
Should I simply top it back up to MIN and monitor it?
If it’s genuinely losing coolant, where are the most common places to look on a 996 Turbo, given the coolant lines have been pinned?
Would you recommend getting the system pressure-tested if the level drops again?
Could a small drop like this simply have been there for some time without indicating a significant leak?
I’ve attached photos showing the current coolant level. A photo from about 2 months ago when it was just slightly below the MIN, then another one this weekend (including a pencil line, so I can keep track of it).
Thanks in advance — just trying to establish whether I’m worrying about nothing or whether I should get it investigated.
Yeah, top it up and see how long it takes to drop again. If it’s the original tank it could be cracked - not uncommon. Have a look underneath and see if there is any pink residue on anything.
Water is fine - there is 18 litres or so in the system so you are hardly diluting it!
Bet as said above it’s the tank - mine is doing the same and I’ve got a new tank to fit …. Good threads on here about it
When it’s properly hot and you park up, if it’s the tank you will see a few drops of coolant on the ground under where the tank sits, so just under the left hand bumper behind the rear wheel
Car is parked in garage, has been since June, nothing on the ground. No drops, nothing. Had the car on the ramp recently too (friends ramp), bone dry. Very strange, will keep an eye on it.
Just had a real good hoak about the engine bay, absolutely bone dry - will top up tomorrow and just keep an eye on it. There is some very faint white crust around the cap, I’ll unscrew it tomorrow and have a proper look.
I assume I’m okay to just remove the lid tomorrow morning? There’s no pressure release or anything to do before hand? New to this world, I just like to be sure…
In and out of the garage like a yoyo, wife thinks I’ve lost my mind lol
So the blue cap ends in “01”, after a bit of research I can see the most recent is “04” so I’ve just ordered one from Design911 for £28.
I’ve even got those upgraded grills in the front to prevent anything damaging the front rads.
It can also be a hose if it’s rubbing on something. If, wherever it’s leaking from, it’s leaking onto something hot and it’s only a small amount, chances are you won’t ever see any coolant on the floor as it just evaporates off the hot surface. I had a leaky hose that had been rubbing on a bolt (not a turbo so bit different in there) but I only saw it by getting a torch and looking up from underneath.
