Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought a DesignTek valved exhaust for my 2005 996 C4S and, although I was very pleased with the exhaust itself, I was disappointed that the valves were operated using a separate remote control. I found this quite awkward to use while driving. I wanted something that worked in the same way as the original Porsche PSE system, using the PSE button in the centre console . I looked into using the Porsche PSE relay, but at £267.08 it seemed a rather expensive solution for what is, essentially, a small addition to the car. So I decided to design my own. After quite a bit of development, testing and refinement, I've produced a small controller PCB with its own wiring harness, which replaces the RF remote control and allows the aftermarket vacuum valves to be operated from the genuine Porsche PSE button . The controller sits neatly in the space behind the PSE switch, keeping everything hidden and retaining a factory-style appearance. Features Integrates directly with the genuine Porsche PSE centre console switch. Eliminates the need for the separate RF remote. Remembers the last valve position and restores it when the car is started. Automatically recovers following power loss or battery disconnection. Provides OEM-style operation with discreet LED feedback. Compatible with most aftermarket remote-controlled vacuum valve systems — tested with DesignTek . (Note: Does not have the speed-related quietening input (Yet!)) Installation The installation is relatively straightforward and requires only basic tools. You need: An original Porsche PSE button - 99661398810A05 (matte black) for RHS of the centre console horseshoe. (I bought my PSE button directly from Porsche, but unfortunately they won't let me buy any more, so the kit doesn't include the button . A spare switch position in the centre console. Basic hand tools, including a "spudger" to remove the Horseshoe. Spade connectors if you are not using the standard solenoid connector. Tap connector if you're not happy with the method I used to attach the lighting circuit The wiring consists of: +12V accessory-switched supply via a piggyback fuse. Ground connection near the fuse box. Dash lighting connection for button illumination. Connection to the vacuum solenoid. The solenoid control wiring is routed along the transmission tunnel or down the sill and into the engine bay. I've allowed enough cable to route it along the transmission tunnel to the solenoid, but it may go down the sill I'll provide illustrated installation instructions with the kit. I have three kits available; if anyone is interested, or would like to discuss compatibility with their particular exhaust/valve setup, please send me a PM. I haven't decided on a price yet, other than it will be around £50, which is much cheaper than the Porsche relay. Happy to answer any questions; just PM me Disclaimer This is an enthusiast-designed product and is not manufactured, endorsed or approved by Porsche AG . I'm not an electrical engineer, but the system has been thoroughly tested. Testing carried out Tested valve open/closed operation using the original Porsche PSE button. Tested correct operation through multiple ignition on/off cycles . Tested that the controller remembers the last valve state after the ignition is switched off. Tested restoration of the valve state following battery/power disconnection . Tested operation with the DesignTek vacuum solenoid . Tested the controller's 12V power supply and switching circuitry . Tested operation of the PSE button illumination . Tested the controller with the engine running and the vehicle's normal electrical system operating. Tested repeated switching of the valves to check reliability and consistent operation . Tested the installation and cable routing in the 996 centre console and transmission tunnel . Checked that the controller remains isolated behind the PSE switch. Checked that the system does not interfere with the normal operation of other vehicle systems . Tested recovery following loss and restoration of vehicle power . Carried out extended road testing to confirm reliable operation under normal driving conditions. I'd also add one important qualification: Testing has been carried out on my own 2005 996 C4S with a DesignTek valved exhaust system. Compatibility with other aftermarket exhaust/solenoid systems has not necessarily been verified. Installation is undertaken entirely at the owner's risk, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, vehicle construction requirements and exhaust/noise regulations remains the responsibility of the vehicle owner and installer. The controller functions solely as an interface to an existing aftermarket exhaust valve system and does not alter the engine management or emissions systems.

POST 3Original post

This is great, well done. Have you seen this though, which has been on the 997 forum for quite some time? https://911uk.com/porsche/retrofitting-pse-switch.88936/ I've done this on mine, and similarly it works well.

POST 4Original post

I have parts to make a similar kit, but much less sophisticated using a latching relay and a vacuum reservoir from a VW. I haven't gotten around to wiring it up as I eventualyl decided I would want to use the original PSE vacuum reservoir and fittings. My car's a 1999, but I have retrofitted a set of 996.2 PSE silencers that I got at a steal some years ago to replace my rotted original ones. Seeing your design I'm not actually sure the latching relay will work. It will not remember the position for sure, but it should keep the vacuum solenoid open when the button is pressed. I also agree, the OE relay is crazy expensive!

I was researching into making this but I’ll take one of yours please. Sent you dm

POST 6Original post

Can other standard dash switches be used, instead of the PSE switch? Like another central locking switch - used ones are cheap and readily available on EBay.

You could probably carefully erase the symbol and get it reprinted with the "correct" PSE symbol for not a lot of money nowadays too.

Hi blytha , do you know if this could/would work with a 997.1 PSE switch? Thanks
