Reported cause
The real problem is finding a good body man to do the work and most only want to work on as new cars at £160 per hour.

The scrap value is in the engine and gearbox so your plan to buy a 997.1 and instal the engine is probably the best option and sell off the remainder to a breaker or if you have the space sell the parts left over yourself.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi
My brothers 996.2 tip has sadly taken a hit in the side. He was driving past a junction and someone pulled out as he was going past. He does have dashcam footage.
What are opinions on this damage, likely write off? This is the car where we rebuilt the engine (as detailed on this forum).
If a write off then buy back and repair, or else (my favourite idea) get a scored/blown 997.1 3.6 tip and switch engines.
All the best
Berni
That's sickening after doing all that work, then again if they do write it off as you've already said, it could be viewed as an opportunity to get something better, newer or different!
Hi
It was a shame, its a really nice car. Last weekend we did both front coffin arms and had a day long struggle changing the coolant tank. What fun that was. A lot of effort has gone into that car. More than into my 993 probably, although that is set to change soon with planned work. If someone crashes into that I am going to be even more upset as there would be no positive way forwards.
Driving as defensively as possible is as much as you can do, but however much you can improve the odds of such a thing happening it's an ever present possibility.
Thanks again
Berni
The B post looks bad but i think they are available., but then the rear quarter and B post could be sourced from a breaker so you would have the panels. Either way your story is an everyday occurance here in N London where driving standards are from another place.
Hi
As thought the insurance company has written the car off........
I posted this in the 996 marketplace much selling thread, but gathered no opinions. so I thought I would try here.
It's a very well kept 120k mile 2002 996 Tip slate grey with black leather interior. Has had a suspension refresh and lots of other work done recently including the rads and expansion tank. Aircon rad changed and works.
What would be a realistic offer from the insurance company for the car? Also we fully rebuilt the engine from Hartech machined cases, all 6 cyl with reconditioned pistons. Parts came to 8k alone as a min on top of the machining cost so much was changed. The
Insurance
company don't know about the rebuilt engine just that it runs well.
Obviously we are going to buy back the car in order to keep the engine or perhaps even repair if it can be done economically.
Thoughts please
Berni
I’m thinking the insurance company will offer trade value, which is regardless of maintenance…..£5kish?
You should be able to buy it back for 50%, but haggle them down.
I think you could get £1-2k profit from it (and a damaged car of course!!)
is it still driveable? if so wont the rear wing pull out? some of these dent guys are amazing and can probably get that back to where it needs to be - not sure how it would work with the B pillar as straightening that may compromise its structural integrity but could be worth a chat..........i am not talking a mobile dent guy obvs, it'll take a jig rig to pull it
Hi Phil
I am not sure that I have been clear enough on my question. The insurance company, if they write off the car (which they have) will payout on the pre accident value which even if you sell to WBAC is 11k. I am guessing the 5k you mention is what you think the the scrap value of the car might be.
I was after opinion on what the insurance payout should (approximately) be before any excess/buyback values are taken into account.
Many thanks
Berni
I don’t understand?
You say they will payout £11k, but you’re asking opinions on what the payout should be?
My limited dealings with
insurance
write off is one over 20 years ago, and it was no where near market value (admittedly the car was a grey import), so don’t get your hopes up, but fingers crossed it works out for you/your brother.
Hi Phil
I responded to your opinion that the
insurance
company would pay out £5k as the value of the car by pointing out that even WBAC (We Buy Any Car) who only usually pay the lowest possible price value the car pre crash at 11k.
The insurance company have not made an offer yet, the purpose of my post was to ask the collective intelligence of the forum what a fair offer would be.
Thanks again
Berni
Have you put the car details into wbac recently? (Top tip: change one digit of your phone number so they won’t spam call you)
I’d be really surprised if there offer is £11k for a 120k mile 996.
Hello
Actually I have just checked, I put we buy any car into google and clicked the first link and it was "Motorway" not WBAC. I did not notice. It gave me the price on the screen and I thought it was WBAC. I hate it when Google does that. Usually I am in a hurry and end up calling the wrong place.
The email I got said.....
Hi Bernard,
Getting a great price for your car doesn’t have to be hard – Motorway makes it simple.
Good news – your Porsche is valued at £10,764. This is based on real-time market data and bids from dealers for cars like yours. To get started, you tell us a few more details about your car, snap a few pics, and we’ll take it from there.
I will try WBAC but yes probably lower. In any case I am after the forums opinion if there is one. If there isn't then fine. Plus we would pay 10k for any good condition 996.2 Tip coupe with 120k on the clock as long as its not a horrific colour combo.
Berni
One more question, is the car still in your possession or did it get collected to a storage yard?
If you really want to buy it back, you really don’t want it sitting in storage somewhere with costs increasing, whilst you try to haggle with a payout.
Autotrader has similar cars listed for between £11500 and £14500.
Is this not an indicator for the ‘market’? (I am also not naive to the fact that the advertised price is often not the eventually agreed sale price)
I haven’t gone into the details of all but I would doubt they have had the engine rebuild and other maintenance your brother’s car has had.
Whether providing that information influences the
insurance
pay out and the insurance company’s decision on salvage value I wouldn’t know.
The ins co won’t underwrite the engine rebuild.. they will just take a stab at the market value and offer that. Others here have indicated a market price I’d assume it would be about that. They will then offer the car to co part or similar who will give them a price, I would guess that will be similar to what they would ask you for if you buy the car salvage. I’d not mention the engine rebuilt costs, might make the up the salvage value.
You can always ask for "Cash in lieu" rather than a write off.
They will give you the price to get it repaired, less vat and it won't be registered.
Might be too late for that now.
You could end up with your car and £10k payout.
With the rebuilt engine I would consider that option.
Just say that you would rather it not written off, that you have spent more than the cars value on keeping it tip top so want to consider options.
Hi Guys
Have the preliminary figures from the ins co, but until they are set in stone and no longer subject to change don't want to say anything. Will report back in due course.
Tks again
Berni
Hi There
Just to close this thread and thank everyone who contributed to it.
It turns out on further questioning that my brother had disclosed all the engine and other work done to the insurance company when he insured the car, and they have without argument paid out what we consider the full retail value of the car to have been. So basically the best possible result. He has bought the salvage back and is considering his options.

Hi just an update the car sat on the drive for 8 months, it has been started regularly. We managed to find a repair guy.
Did a good job car looks great again and back on the road. This car was always going to be a keeper.
