What $’s would I be looking at to replace synchros and what else comes under the “whilst you’re there” list.

Otherwise replace TEMU unit with an Alpine or Kenwood

When in gear, I’m getting a high pitched whine through the speakers that changes tone with the revs and disappears when the clutch is in.

also worth checking out that you have a good earth - the PO of my 996 ran his own earth to a point down by the airbag ECU to get a good solid ground - not sure, but is stereo earth a common issue ?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Further to my other recent thread on purchasing a 996, I pulled the trigger on a Paladio metallic November ‘97 build which happily still has the yolk part of the fried eggs on its lights. Happy Chappy.
Now the questions begin. Last owner fitted a single din Temu looking CarPlay unit (console delete). When in gear, I’m getting a high pitched whine through the speakers that changes tone with the revs and disappears when the clutch is in. I’m not an audiophile so any ideas on grounding or filters gratefully received.
1st to 2nd is obstructive and will graunch if hurried. I reckoned worn synchro and took that into account when offering. Clutch feels fine as does the rest of the box but could it be anything else?. What $’s would I be looking at to replace synchros and what else comes under the “whilst you’re there” list. Has an IMS of unknown origin so I guess that would need to be confirmed.
Good call!. Standard was 4 spoke right?. The sticker doesn’t have the M436 code so I’m guessing this was bought later in its life. Colour matched to the rest of the interior.
Wise advice. Not handy with wires, but as long as I don’t set the car alight. .
The Yanks keep talking up the Power Accoustik CP71 (yes…a “k”) which is available through Walmart and shippable here. Maybe frying pan into the fire. I’ll look into Alpine as I’m old enough to remember saving up for one of those lovely green cubed units back in the late ‘80s.

I am putting one of these in my 997.1. But you could try Jaycar Electronics or Dick Smith for a locally sourced suppressor/capacitor
i have one of these in the lotus :

i've bought heaps of stuff through alixpress over the years and never had issues .. well only one issue with a lithium ion battery that was not as described and seller wanted me to pay for its return to china to refund me which wasnt worth it ... just look at the returns small print when you buy
the above unit works well (no buzzing) and I like that it has a physical rotary knob for volume - v cheap as well from aliexpress. however, if you have a buzzing through the speakers now, its likely an electrical noise in the car rather than the stereo - try a big capacitor first like others suggest ...
also worth checking out that you have a good earth - the PO of my 996 ran his own earth to a point down by the airbag ECU to get a good solid ground - not sure, but is stereo earth a common issue ?
oh - and i have one of these in my 996:

works extremely well, although its double din so dont think it'd work for you ...
Personally I would get one of these:

If you buy from an Australian store they usually do not come with a remote, but if you buy from Germany it comes with a remote. Shallow depth and creates a nice retro touch in the car that does not look out of place.
Amazon prices fluctuate a bit so worth waiting for a sale and you will probably get it cheaper.
Love the look of that. Old enough to remember when that look was cutting edge!. That would sort the Bluetooth phone connection and then just rely on the phone on a vent for navigation.
Plus with a single din stereo you can do the centre console delete option like the GT3 had which is a massive improvement in both looks and leg room.
The colour of the digital display can be changed to match perfectly with the digital display of the 996 so it looks like it belongs.
Blaupunkt make other retro stereos and I also like this one:

I was very happy with the single DIN Continental 7412 unit (available with various options), which was pretty much plug and play for the 996 original unit, think I had 2 swap 2 wires - +ve and ignition sense from memory. Orange display, I put them in both 996.1 GT3 and 996.1 c2. About $300-$350 when i did them, via Ebay or there was a local on-line supplier too. Gave me hands free phone which was my main intention.
If you want to pay the Porsche tax, you could also look at the single DIN unit, but I think in the 996 you are better off with one of the cheaper ones with the wider screen.
