Hey everyone! I have to say it is so weird to be writing this out... I always grew up seeing the shiny Porsche in the garage and I didn’t realize how suddenly you can lose a loved one and how quickly life can change!
Hi guys my name is Ben and a year ago my dad an avid car lover (67’GTO, 69 Firebird, 66
Mustang
, 84
911
, 93
Mustang
) was ironically T-boned and passed away, as a result I inherited his Porsche. I’m 29 years old and wanna keep this guy in the family for my son, but it doesn’t start and I can’t ask my Dad why! Lol but here’s the details:
My dad bought it straight from the dealership in SoCal back in 1984. He built a mini garage and kept it covered and sectioned away in its garage. He literally never let it get rained on, like he let us his kids get poured on but that Porsche has literally never seen the rain. It only has 19k miles on it and I know he last started and drove it 6 years ago. He mentioned something was wrong with it but I can’t remember what, I don’t think he knew but he said something was.
I filled it with oil from Porsche dealership in SLC and put a new
battery
in it and new fuel. I started it and it cranked over kinda putted out white smoke and then went BANG and now it sounds locked up and it won’t crank over... did I ruin it? I believe oil leaked into the cylinders but that’s based on phone calls trying to find an auto shop that can diagnose and fix this.
Do you guys know of any auto shops that could work on a 1984 Porsche that could diagnose and then repair those symptoms?
THANK YOU for any help!!!!!!
By your description it sounds like something expensive and internal to the engine. You stated your dad (sorry by the way) told you there was something wrong, that made trying to simply run it a bad decision. The only cheaper bang on an old
911
is a blown airbox via a backfire but the engine would still turn over and I think that's older variants than yours. As for shops of course there are places to rebuild it, all you need is bank. If you're seeking specific suggestions knowing where you're looking for a shop will help.
Sincere condolences regarding your father -- it must be devastating.
Hopefully you can get the car back up and running and the bang wasn't a sign of something too serious. I'd suggest finding a local independent shop that can diagnose the problem. If you re-title the thread to "searching for indy shop in Salt Lake City" or something similar you may have more luck getting a recommendation. Also look at the regional forums here on Planet-9 to see if there are any recommendations. But first, please post some pictures of the car!
Thanks for the reply/info! So here’s where my road block comes:
A: Money, let’s talk about it I have a savings, would it be realistic to drop the engine, fix problem, put engine back in and then **** back to me for under 10k?
B: I’m kinda having trouble just finding someone, I’ve called every (or close too) shop in UT and no one feels comfortable working on it. CPR Auto in SD,Ca wants to fix it but only to purchase it and they don’t have a referral. The last shop I found was in Maine so I thought ok there has to be an auto shop on the West Coast that is able to work on these off of Google and calling I just haven’t been able to find any that works on vintage Porsches so I thought I’d see if maybe any of you guys have a recommendation?
Thank you for the info too!!
Thanks for the advice! I just changed it! I’ll also go check those regional forums out tonight too!! I knew you ‘forum’ guys would have some good info!! Also here’s some pics!!
