Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report a fix

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Replace alternator and issue gone' (1 discussions report resolution; 0 report an unsuccessful attempt). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'present' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace alternator and issue gone' (1 discussions). For that action, 1 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. The most frequently reported fix is 'Replace alternator and issue gone', supported by resolution reports in 1 discussions. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

That repair fixed the check-engine light, but the ABS/PSM problem was present before the DME repair and remained unchanged afterward.

Since the original module tested good, I’m trying to determine whether this could be caused by:
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

5281 develop on an original module that had worked correctly for years and was never replaced
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for help with an ABS/PSM issue on my
2004 996 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, 6-speed manual
.
I bought the car about a year ago and it did not have this problem at the time. Toward the end of last season, the ABS and PSM lights would occasionally come on after the car had been sitting for several days. They would usually clear after a restart or after driving for a minute or two.
After winter storage, the lights became permanent, and the cruise control stopped working at the same time.
The main PSM fault is:
5281 – Version Coding Error
What has been done so far:
New battery
Brake-light switch replaced
Steering-angle sensor calibrated
Wheel-speed signals appear normal
VIN is correctly stored in the PSM
Manual transmission is correctly identified
Coding attempt with PIWIS fails with
29000 – Negative control unit response
Fault 5281 returns immediately after clearing
Original ABS/PSM unit was sent to XeMODeX and tested good, with no repair required
The module has never been replaced
My current ABS/PSM unit numbers are:
Porsche:
996.355.755.63
Bosch hydraulic unit:
0 265 225 101
PIWIS identification:
996.618.149.04
I’m using a
VAS6154 V1.6.6 Full Chip
with
PIWIS III v41.500 in Engineering Mode
.
The DME was also sent to ECU Doctors for an unrelated O2 sensor fault. That repair fixed the check-engine light, but the ABS/PSM problem was present before the DME repair and remained unchanged afterward.
Since the original module tested good, I’m trying to determine whether this could be caused by:
A PIWIS installation or coding issue
Power or ground problem at the PSM
CAN communication problem
Wiring or connector issue
Internal coding-memory problem that was not reproduced during bench testing
Has anyone seen fault
5281 develop on an original module that had worked correctly for years and was never replaced
?
I would appreciate any advice on specific PIWIS actual values, wiring checks, power/ground tests, or the next logical diagnostic step before buying another module.
Its either your battery is going bad, or alternator. I had same symptoms for a few weeks then noticed alternator wasn't charging. Replaced alternator and issue gone.
Sounds like maybe its battery if it goes away after a few minutes, giving alternator time to charge or at least giving car over 12.5v.
