Strangely it has an oil dipstick tube fitted but no dipstick.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I saw this at Goodwood today and it got me wondering. Has anyone seen an earlier one than this W Reg car? Apart from the front splitter it looked in very good order. Unusual Meridian Silver too.

POST 2Original post

Re: Who's got the earliest 996 Turbo on here? A rare car indeed, how many 2000 registered cars where there ? Anyway of finding out ?

POST 3Original post

Re: Who's got the earliest 996 Turbo on here? I think there might have been 16 (without gloveboxes)

POST 4Original post

16 ?????? Is there anyway of finding out for sure ? Even 2000 registered cars were 2001 spec on the chassis numbers i think .

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The only accurate info I've got is that 16 x Model Year 2000 cars and 5324 x Model Year 2001 cars were produced in total. I assume that this is the total number of 'pre-glovebox' cars. That probably means that only 600-1000 came to the UK. Most will be 'Y' or 51 Reg. I've seen a few 'X Reg' but this was my first 'W'. As 'W' is pre-August 2000 I reckon that this must be one of the very first UK cars.

POST 9Original post

2000 uk registered cars were allocated 2001 chassis numbers at porsche When did the glove box come in ? I guess the earliest uk one must have been wearing 911 HUL at one point .

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've always assumed that the facelift/glovebox model came in for MY 2002. Autocar published a roadtest of a black 996T with Porsche GB's 911 HUL plate on 12th July 2000. As this car was registered in July 2000 it was probably also one of the original 'press cars'.

POST 11Original post

As far as I know, the facelift 996 Turbo with glovebox was from MY2002 (i.e. from August 2001)

POST 12Original post

You often find "press cars" have a few subtlle enhancements over normal. They often select the best ponies to power them. Be interesting to see how many were registered from march to August. And what the split is manual to tip.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Me too. Typo now corrected.

POST 14Original post

Hmmm.....interesting. Just banged the plate in autotrader (as a seller) and they claim its a....Porsche 911 2dr Tiptronic S Comes up as a Turbo with mycarcheck though.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That probably just helps explain why so many cars end up in the wrong section of Autotrader. I certainly wouldn't trust their search engine as a source of reliable info'. For the record the car was a non-glovebox manual.

POST 16Original post

My car comes up as a GT3 on mister auto, and a bifuel car on my local Autofactors. Just shows how wrong the data can be, and on How many left the 996 turbo does not exist at all !

POST 17Original post

Mines a W plate with no glovebox! not sure on the date it was regiestered tho... just checked, 15 june 2000 !

POST 21Original post

The only other Meridian Silver turbo I've ever seen! I'm not the only one then!

POST 22Original post

Old Mine is a W registration , first registered 30/6/2000. Guards red with manual box. No glovebox and 47k miles. Must be one of the very few red ones from back then. Al

POST 27Original post

Mine's such a youngster, production completed 12/1/2001 registered 24/1/2001. I was never in with a shout for this one

POST 28Original post

Manual to tip split I know this is an old thread but did anyone find out the split of manual to tip cars produced for the 16 year 2000 911 turbos? My turbo is a manual X reg registered 12/09/2000 Be interesting to know. :?:

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Re: Manual to tip split That level of detailed information is not recorded anywhere afaik NB: Your car is a MY 2001. The 16 x MY 2000 cars were made between August 1999 and July 2000 and were probably press cars.

POST 30Original post

Oohh mine's another W July 2000, no glove box. I didn't realise it was special. Exciting  I always suspected it was pride of place in a showroom somewhere as it seemed to have every option ticked.

POST 31Original post

Mine was built on 28th August 2000. X reg. Strangely it has an oil dipstick tube fitted but no dipstick.

POST 32Original post

And being used as its maker intended :bandit:

POST 33Original post

Yes same here!! I always wondered why that was??? Anyone shed any light on the dipstick tube?

POST 34Original post

Earliest 996 Turbo Hi I'm new on here, but was reading the thread of 'earliest 996 T'. Mine is a 2001 spec car, but W reg - registered 6th June 2000 and now has just clocked 58,000 miles. No glove box which would be handy, but makes it a little rarer. I've not yet found one earlier - but perhaps someone will.

POST 35Original post

My built date is 2000 and registered Jan 2001..on an X plate

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Re: Earliest 996 Turbo :welcome: to 911uk Baz' Yours sounds like the earliest one around. What's your VIN No? I believe the earliest car ended in 680001.

POST 38Original post

Earliest 996 Turbo That looks fantastic! These are my two. I've had the 944 S2 cab (Guards Red) for 14 years now and the 996 (Lapis Blue - manual) since 2020.

POST 40Original post

My Turbo was registered 14th May 2001, still no glovebox 😅

POST 41Original post

Re: Old Does your car have a grey interior ? If it does it's likely I use to own it.

POST 42Original post

Earliest 996 Turbo Hi again. My Lapis Blue has grey interior. Barry

Hopefully better late than never! I have a contender for earliest. It's one of those early, first order of 16 x 996TT's. Build date 12 September 2000. No glovebox. The PCNA 2002 996 911 turbo coupe order form, page 2 is attached. Glovebox is a highlight for this model year. I hope that this helps.

Welcome to 911uk I certainly haven't heard of many earlier than yours but BazTop's (6/6/2000) is still the earliest we know of.

POST 45Original post

I've just bought a 2001 Turbo. No glovebox. Are there any other differences in spec between the early "non-glovebox" cars and the later ones?

POST 46 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2835422

It's been discussed a few times over the years and I'm pretty sure the conclusion was NO.

POST 48 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2835512

Cheers F/Fwd to 29 minutes and it states that dials and vents are slightly smaller on 2001 cars and cup holders are different. I don't know whether this was just US models or RoW too. Whatever, none were significantly different over later model years.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 2835556

Thanks - so very little then. I don't have any cupholders - but the car has had a double din screen put in.

POST 50Original post

A good mate of mine has an early one, lapis blue with GT2 spec suspension from factory, no glovebox, grey interior, W plate, registered 14th June 2000.

A build date of September 2000 makes that one a Model Year 2001 car. The VIN No. shown in your picture confirms this. The 16 early cars were built before August 2000 and didn't have gloveboxes.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
