Suggestion

Part of the disconnect of the current administration, aside from having literally no idea how most of the private sector actually creates GDP, is the lack of worldliness to understand quite how much global competition there is for HNW individuals and, how portable true HNW actually is.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Speccing new Porsches is very expensive. I configured a new Carrera T and GTS to £130 and £170. I would never order these cars now at that price because there are too many better pre owned options for similar or less money. I have seen now a lot of cars advertised wither brand new stock or some money off. Are we now at a stage where we will be expecting money off Porsches? Will dealers be fighting for your business? I understand GT cars will be different. Anyone recently had money off or heard of discounts?

POST 2Original post

My OPC has contact me to say that they are willing to "do a deal" on new order / my spec, commenting this would be competitive to any pre reg cars that are currently on the market on AT. I spoke to another dealer recently said that they would be willing to sit down and talk about a discount. Seems like there are options. Now I don't know the level of discount yet but looking at what is currently for sale maybe 5-7%?? Would hope for 10% but might this might be a pipe dream! Should add this was on a 911, I suspect the level of discount might differ between models.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think discounts will be available but how much I don't know. I would think 10% would be reasonable. Reading between the lines I think Porsche dealers will face difficult times but I understand everything is relative. I was told orders for the "old" petrol Macan will stop this year and 911's are way too expensive. Electric sales have slowed. I have been offered GT4RS and Spyder RS so where are the queue of buyers for them?

POST 4Original post

The Salon Prive show in London (Chelsea) has just been cancelled ....

POST 5Original post

yes, discounts are available. i've been offered up to 12% off a new order, but most dealers offer between 8-10%. alot more is available off pre reg cars. i've seen cars with between 15-18% off.

I have been offered GT4RS and Spyder RS so where are the queue of buyers for them? macan is a difficult one to get much of a discount on as they arent building many at the moment, so the few that are coming through are selling quite quickly. whilst there was talk of sales ending this year, with porsche now commited to ice for the foreseeable future, i think they will start ramping up production again.

Jumpingjackflash said: What models were you offered with 12% off? gts and t. they offered a few percent off carrera s, but said as it was newly launched there was big demand for it watch those start piling up in compounds as soon as they arrive! nothing is offered off the standard carrera as apparently if you order a new one, you are going to have to wait 6-9 months. they have have lots of new ones sat around so are trying to shift those before they fulfil any new orders and trying to create a false sense of demand on them

POST 15Original post

Trade shows cost big money. The boat market is pulling away from shows and exhibitor numbers are down. There are many ways of selling things and shows are amongst the most expensive. To the basic cost add accommodation, entertaining etc.

POST 16Original post

My ‘discount’ history. Boxster 2014. No discount. Free Porsche jacket, worth about £150. 718 Cayman 2016. 5% discount. Free car care kit worth about £80. 718 Cayman T 2019. 5% discount. Free thermos worth about £45. 718 GT4. No discount. No freebies. 911 Carrera T 2023. Can remember if the discount was 5% or 7%. No freebies - although the OPC stumped up £200 for a meal for us as they cocked-up the hand over.

Digga said: Part of the disconnect of the current administration, aside from having literally no idea how most of the private sector actually creates GDP, is the lack of worldliness to understand quite how much global competition there is for HNW individuals and, how portable true HNW actually is. Mobility is one of the defining factors of real wealth. Well, if you're talking 'real' wealth, there's then the question of how much a loss to the economy such people will be. They're adept at avoiding tax and they arguably don't put much money back into the broader, well, 'real' economy. Luxury goods markets and certain asset classes will suffer, for sure, as they go. But the broader economy? That's less clear. The income / capital growth HNW individuals have enjoyed over the last, say, 10 to 15 years, has consistently beaten GDP by a large margin, which means the economy / wealth has been growing steadily more imbalanced with wealth more and more concentrated. That's a problem because wealth is, ultimately, a relative rather than absolute phenomenon. Not that I am in favour of driving wealthy people out of the UK or a radical approach to seizing assets etc or anything like that. But the implicit assumption that emigration of a chunk of HNW people who only spend a tiny proportion of their income in the real economy and are increasingly imbalancing the economy will automatically be a disaster in really broad economic terms doesn't really scan.

POST 22Original post

Neither does the Government's ill conceived plan that all the HMWs will happily stay and pay loads more tax. Ergo everybody loses...........

But the broader economy? That's less clear. It depends what you mean by “real” wealth. I would think you’re setting a relatively high bar for that. There are plenty of people who don’t meet that criteria who would be a loss to the UK…let’s say people with assets of between £1mil and £5mil. They wouldn’t have access to the kind of structures that people with “real” wealth so have so pay their full share of taxes. They are in my mind the people that pay/have paid a large amount of tax, probably have private health insurance, probably educate their children privately etc. So they’re less of a burden on the state but pay high taxes. I used to work for a Family Office….people I think you would classify as “real” wealth. They’d be a big miss too…keep several people employed directly/persoanlly. Sure 99.9% of their assets are off shore but they have very expensive lifestyles.

Sure 99.9% of their assets are off shore but they have very expensive lifestyles. £1-5 million, definitely not 'real' wealth in a HNW context. Such people (the £1-5M) also aren't even remotely as mobile as the actually wealthy - as the other poster said above, mobility is a defininf feature of real wealth. Typically most of the £1-5M types have their wealth in one big asset (house obvs) with a few more bits and pieces. It's much, much riskier for them to sell up and move. They lack sufficient assets to easily live off investment income etc and would likely need to (or at least have a strong preference to) do things like pre-arrange employment before the move and generally they just wouldn't have a buffer should things go a bit wrong with the move. They're not really mobile and not really wealthy. If you've got, oh I dunno, £100M or more, it's all totally different in terms of your ability to leave on a whim. Obviously, if every one (or a large proportion of people) with £1m in assets or more naffed off, that would be a huge problem! But really don't see how you can define someone with £1M as HNW these days. £5M, you could argue the toss, I'd say borderline at best. Maybe £10M an up. But even people with £10M aren't as mobile as the truly wealthy. Putting a number on it a bit arbitrary, but £1M surely doesn't qualify?

POST 25Original post

Sorry, this is all totally OT! I'll stop! But it is kind of interesting!

POST 26Original post

Cheib said: I used to work for a Family Office….people I think you would classify as “real” wealth. They’d be a big miss too…keep several people employed directly/persoanlly. Sure 99.9% of their assets are off shore but they have very expensive lifestyles. Not sure that's true. The "problem" with those people is that they effectively take wealth out of the economy. You may think they spend a llot, but in fact they spend a tiny amount in proportion to their assets. If you take someone with, say, £10 billion, and consider how much they spend in the economy, how active that £10 billion is, it's absolute peanuts compared to £10 billion across 10,000 middle class families with £1M each. A billionaire spends more per head, for absolute sure. But outside of money that goes into buying assets that drive very little economic activity, not 10,000 more. One £10 billionaire doesn't spend as much on dinning out as 10,000 people with £1 million. There are high-end luxury exceptions, but for most parts of the economy, you'd be better of with 10,000 millionaires than one 10 billionaire in terms of driving economic activity. That's why having more and more wealth tied up at the top end as their wealth out grows wider the economy is such a problem in the long run. You just end up with a s t load of wealth that's barely economically active. So the argument would be that policies that might drive some of the really wealthy out but promote economic activity across the bulk of the middle class are what you want to rebalance. Don't ask me what, though! Edited by f6box on Monday 10th March 21:17

I’d like to order a bee 911 GTS Cabriolet. Im gearing that i should be able to get 10-12% off a new order but none if the dealers ive spoken with are suggesting more than 5%. I havent pushed too hard but if I am aiming for 10-12%, i seem some way off. Any suggestions as to which dealers will offer me 10% + off please ?

POST 36Original post

A 10% discount on a new 911 order seems pretty unlikely, but maybe you'll get that on a car that's already in stock. Most of those have loads of options though so the discount could be somewhat diluted by these.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... Was a little bit of discount chat here recently, if I’ve managed to post the link correctly! Personally, my usual OPC suggested 5% off factory order and 10% off stock car for 911. Although this was just a general chat, no idea if more would have been available if I’d made serious enquiries. This was April. I ended up with 17.5% off a Carrera T Cab in Sept (stock car). Happy hunting.

I am looking at cars pre-owned and stock new (GT4RS in particular) and would be good to understand if OPC's are offering anything off these. My last chat with one, they suggested brand new stock cars they can probably do something but not on any pre-owned stock even if it is relatively new.

TBH I can’t claim genius level negotiating skills. The car had the bulk of the discount already applied before I enquired. In fact, I enquired because I didn’t think the price was correct (too low!). The already low price + them including 1st year RFL + offering £4K higher trade-in compared to my local OPC sealed the deal.

I would expect those discount levels to be achievable at most OPC. But if you are phoning round asking “how much discount will you give me iff a 911” you’ll likely not get too far

I am looking at cars pre-owned and stock new (GT4RS in particular) and would be good to understand if OPC's are offering anything off these. My last chat with one, they suggested brand new stock cars they can probably do something but not on any pre-owned stock even if it is relatively new. Happy to share. Solihull. TBH I can t claim genius level negotiating skills. The car had the bulk of the discount already applied before I enquired. In fact, I enquired because I didn t think the price was correct (too low!). The already low price + them including 1st year RFL + offering £4K higher trade-in compared to my local OPC sealed the deal. I traded my BGTS in at Solihull last month to get a 991.2 Turbo S cab (cash buyer) and got the equivalent of 8% off, plus 3 years Porsche warranty. Great people to deal with too.

I agree that Solihull are great to deal with. Both on the sales and servicing side. No discount for me however when I bought my new 992 earlier this year. And I did ask!

They were happy to do a deal, Sam was my chap there, and he was attentive, honest and professional from start to finish. Initial cost to change was 70k, but I got them down to 62k, which is actually just over 11%. I d have happily paid the 70 as the 911 is our perfect colour and spec, but likewise I like the fun of the back and forth negotiation, all done from a villa in Lanzarote whilst on holiday. As mentioned in another thread, I went with a mate to Leicester in early Jan to purchase an ex-demo GTS cab. I think list was about £160k, listed at £144,750 and wouldn’t budge an inch during negotiation. If they’d offered even a token gesture of discount he would have bought it. Sadly, their “We’re doing you a favour selling it you for full price as the price will be going up next week” attitude put him off and he walked. It’s still for sale, they’ve been gradually reducing the price every week since. Currently at £139,750. I’m not sure if this shows discounts are available or not!

Tips on best approach to secure a discount on a new order (and maybe stock too)? Email config? Always make appointment vs walk in? Place refundable deposit then get into numbers? Im pretty time poor and don’t “enjoy” the dealer experience so a distance sale is always preferred. But perhaps an in person approach is necessary.

POST 63Original post

Sadly, I don’t think there is one particular approach that always works. It really does seem to be how the OPC feels on the day as to what discount will be offered, if any! My recent experience has shown decent reductions on stock cars, but the OPC isn’t willing to reduce any further below the advertised price. I bought a brand new ‘in stock’ 911 last Sept that was advertised 18% under list. OPC wouldn’t entertain any further reduction. Went with a mate to look at a nearly new (ex-demo) 911 in January. Coincidentally, also advertised at 18% below list price. Different OPC but they also wouldn’t consider any more discount.

If no discount, call another dealer who needs to make up their sales targets for the month.

Drive the Deal and Car File are both advertising discounts on new Porsche cars, including 911. Car File discounts are greater, and my local OPC was happy to match this without hesitation or excuses as to why it couldn't. That was on a 911 that was to my spec and just six weeks from delivery.
