I am obviously looking for alternative options given this cost, and wondered if anyone has experience of differential issues on any Porsche model & used either a transmission specialist to refurb their unit or used a Porsche specialist they would recommend?

My local Porsche independent where I get it serviced said it was the front differential, and they could replace it with a refurbished unit, however it would cost around £6k!

I have seen the post on this forum re Sports & Classics where it turned out to be a wheel bearing or front tyres on a C4, but given how loud the drone is from my car I don't believe it is that.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2001 996 Turbo which has only covered 32k miles, however I am getting a very loud drone from the front of the car, which is getting worse, and is now unbearable to drive. My local Porsche independent where I get it serviced said it was the front differential, and they could replace it with a refurbished unit, however it would cost around £6k! I am obviously looking for alternative options given this cost, and wondered if anyone has experience of differential issues on any Porsche model & used either a transmission specialist to refurb their unit or used a Porsche specialist they would recommend? I have seen the post on this forum re Sports & Classics where it turned out to be a wheel bearing or front tyres on a C4, but given how loud the drone is from my car I don't believe it is that. I am located in Berkshire so looking for options within a couple of hours drive. Any advise would be very much appreciated. Thanks

POST 2Original post

I usually hear of this happening when the car has had non standard size wheels/tyres fitted and therefore the rolling circumference is different from front to back. It's unusual with standard wheel/tyre sizes. However, what's happened has happened, so Northway would be your local indy I would recommend: https://www.northway.co.uk/offers/fixed-price-servicing

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the quick response. I have owned the car for the last 15 years & is completely standard, so has standard wheels tyres fitted. Northway is the local indy I use who diagnosed it as the front diff. They quoted to fit a refurbed unit, whereas given this cost I'm looking for other options than fitting a refurbed unit.

POST 4Original post

Take a gamble on a used one? There are about a dozen on eBay from between £650 and £1000. If you buy one from a breaker, you will probably get some form of short warranty - enough time to fit it and find out if it is OK.
