Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I spent a lot of time searching for whp and torque data that objectively isolates the impact of an ECU flash on a 2.7L 986 Boxster. I wanted the same car, same dyno, similar ambient conditions with the only variable being the flash. Finding a clean independently verified AB comparison has proven impossible so I decided earlier this year to do my own. I used an off the shelf 93 octane flash from a popular tuner. It's the same dynojet dyno and operator, similar ambient conditions. The only mod present in both tests is racing headers with open exhaust. Everything else is stock and there are no changes to the car between tests except the flash. Ignore the vertical line which is a slider that, of course, doesn't work in the post. In the overlay baseline is red and flashed blue. Note that the dip just before 5K rpm is the variocam.

POST 2Original post

Correct if I am wrong, but there is no difference whatsoever.

POST 3Original post

Change 2 variables and how would you know what the effect of one change was? You want a real difference, invest in displacement. Most other changes are so marginal as to not be cost effective in a road car.

POST 4Original post

Liam985 - thanks for taking the time to do this. It certainly validates the thesis that Porsche didn’t leave a lot on the table with how these engines were designed and built. There is certainly power to be made, but a quick flash won’t unlock it. Out of curiosity, did you revert back to the factory tune at the end of the day? Regards,

POST 5Original post

Very cool. Thank you for sharing. I have also been tempted by the siren song of tuning. Either way, it looks like you are making good whp with your exhaust setup. 👍 I think the 3.2 is usually 224ish whp. So you’d closed the gap a bit.

POST 6Original post

Funny you should post this today, I just dyno tested mine yesterday. I posted in a different thread, but here is what I posted: In my setup I have the following: Intake side: - 987 airbox - 987 BMC filter - 987 intake tube and MAF - 45 degree elbow - 997 throttle body (74mm I think?) - 987 modified distribution tube - 996 plenum and runners Exhaust side: - 996 equal length headers - 2 inch stainless tubes - 2 inch high flow cats - 2 inch valved mufflers Other mods: - AC delete - Electric PS conversion - Underdrive pulley For tuning I am using an ApexI SAFC. AT WOT, my AFR is around 11:1 (logged with an AEM wideband), so I need to adjust that, but it's better to be rich than lean. Here is the chart, blue is mufflers fully open, red is mufflers fully closed. I should have done a 'partial open run', but I didn't. I'm pretty happy with the results, I'm basically at crank power, to the wheels. Without doing a lot more very invasive mods, aside from tuning the AFR, I don't think there is much more I can get out of this thing.
