Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The engine was replaced at 40k miles and it has a huge history file.
Leading evidence: 'Replace engine' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'front diff' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check over by a porsche master mechanic' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I’ve also got a C4, I did the the NC500 a couple of years ago and noticed a whine, I thought it was a wheel bearing but it turned out to be a the front diff.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I've had the car just over a year now and am still pleased with the purchase. The front diff is a bit noisy, so I guess a rebuild at Sports and Classic is on the cards but otherwise all good.
I've undertaken quite a few jobs and it has had a recent service. The car had 102,333 miles on it when I purchased it in August '25 and now has 105,500 and cost £12,995 from a very well respected sports car dealer. It's very tidy but a bit lived in, I would be worried to drive it if was perfect, but then it would have been a lot more money.
He gave me a 12 month warranty and that has just expired. The engine was replaced at 40k miles and it has a huge history file.
It had the mother of all services in 2023, totalling £5.5k with Clutch, RMS, all control arms (8), engine mounts, 1 radiator and piping as well as oil change, brake fluid, discs/pads, 4 wheel
suspension setup and more. There was a new water pump in 2025.
Heres what I had done shortly after I purchased the car.;
Gearbox oil change.
Pollen filter change.
Front diff oil change.
New bonnet struts.
New drivers door lock.
2 new front Conti Supersport 7s.
I have the serpentine belt and air filter and will do those myself. I also need to change the door handle micro switch. The new drivers door lock, which I did myself improved things but the window drop still isn't right.
Recent jobs;
Full service, engine oil/filter, brake fluid, plugs/coil packs and general check over by a Porsche Master Mechanic. I bought the oil and plugs and it was £460 for the coil packs and labour.
The Guy did it on my drive. It had to have a new CV joint gator to pass the MOT which was £300.00. The Porsche mechanic really liked the car commenting on how much has been done, he did
comment on the noisy diff!
The flasher relay was going random so I bought one from GSF for £4.50 which is working fine.
The car has been a joy to have and we've had a few fairly long drives and short holidays. The noisy diff is a bit annoying but Sports and Classic want £1500 for a rebuild which doesn't seen too bad. If I drive carefully
I can get 30 mpg and with the price of petrol that's ok, although I do use the performance sometimes and have a lot of fun with it! I have friends with Jags and a Bentley and they can't even get 20mpg.
It's a so far so good from me.
Phil.
I’ve also got a C4, I did the the NC500 a couple of years ago and noticed a whine, I thought it was a wheel bearing but it turned out to be a the front diff.
Was quoted similar costs as you for a rebuild.
I was lucky and managed to find the diff off a 996 turbo who wanted to make his car rear wheel drive only, he had only done 60k and was in perfect condition when removed, I think I paid around £300.
This might be an alternative if you can find a decent one
I was chatting to one of the stall holders at Boxengasse this year who said the GT3 & RS are based on a narrow body C4 shell.
This was their track car…
Yeah I'd pull it out and go 2WD, what more excuse do you need?
Correct about GT3/RS using the C4 shell, supposed to be stiffer up front due to the saddle tank.
I will stick with the 4 wheel drive I think. I doubt I will find a £300 diff like TheBaron3 but I'm not averse to spending a bit on the car.
The servicing this year was about £600 all in plus the CV Boot. A Porsche Specialist where the car was Serviced in the last few years was wanting
about £876 inc vat without the coil packs. I'm trying to keep things sensible, the flasher relay was £4.50 from GSF for instance and works fine.
This year I'll probably end up spending £5-600 on my C4 and that includes an MOT, service in December and new sleeves and coolant clamps before the mot. Yes at 27 years old they are rolling projects but not an expensive car to own. I guess the trick is to buy the right car in the first place... No point in buying a cheap Porsche...!!
Looks clean from a 50K car. Make a daft offer

I had a noise from my front diff as well and it turned out to be the drive shaft support bearing at the pinion end of the diff. Cost only 100€ to replace during an oil change. I had the shop do the diff mount at the same time.
