Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, looking for some recommendations / suggestions please. I have a 1998 Carrera Coupe Manual and am suffering from an intermittent start issue. Can go for ages where it starts on the button, but then sometimes work start. When I say won't start, I mean that the ignition lights are on, the key turns, but no cranking. Up to now I have replaced the ignition switch, starter relay and starter motor and was working fine last year, but I put it away, when the salt appears on the road. However, it happened again this morning when getting it ready for its MOT, left it for 20 mins, went back and it started and continues to start every time. It happens when hot or cold before and after journeys and is doing my head in. Fault reader shows no trouble codes. Would welcome any suggestions or any recommendations of a Porsche independent near Worksop / Doncaster area as I need to get this fixed. Thanks in advance. Richard

POST 2Original post

Hi Richard, It sounds as though you could have an earthing problem with the starter motor or perhaps an issue with the motor itself. I would think that any garage should be able to help, but you could try Googling to see if there are any Porsche Independents in your area. Good luck! Jeff

POST 3Original post

Agree with Jeff. Find your earthing lead and see if it's fitted correctly. Dan

Thanks Dan, did get it fitted at the garage I have used for years and has a two year parts and labour warranty, so could drop it back to them.

POST 5Original post

There's 2 Earth leads I think. 1 at the battery and 1 at the engine It's drivers side engine (flywheel end) to body , about 12" long , they can frey badly especially if motor mounts are worn but you can't see because of the heatshrink covering it up where the cable enters the ferrule. I've just made a new one for mine. Starter is earthed to the block and then via this cable to the body and to the battery - .

Is there a switch on the clutch on those which won’t allow the starter to turn unless the clutch is fully depressed? If so, worth replacing. I had identical issues on my new 2009 Cayman S. Replaced 2 switches under warranty. OPC struggled to diagnose because diagnostics showed no errors and no “depress clutch pedal” messages on dash which it should have done. Not sure if 996 has such a switch - somebody will know!
