These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This car always started right after the key is turned. Now it takes a while when cold. It turns over quick just takes a while to start. Giving it some throttle helps. Did a check on fuel pressure. Still had over 40 # after a week of not using and 50 when running. I considered a CPS but is seems that is more of a warm start issue. No codes. Any ideas?

POST 3Original post

@JFP: That's interesting. Up to now, I have assumed that the display of a speed (in Durametric) correlates directly with a functioning sensor system. If the data characteristics also need to be taken into account, I will have to invest in an oscilloscope.

POST 4Original post

A scope is second only to a topflight diagnostics scan tool in shop usefulness; we have a four channel that gets used just about every day for a myriad of test. Without a scope, you can only see if a CPS does or does not have a signal; the scope tells you if that signal is a quality and consistent signal when compared to a known good version.

POST 5Original post

That’s a great point, JFP! What do failures typically look like? The ECU is processing a frequency signal, but I’d assume there is some minimum voltage that the sensor needs to generate in order for the signal to be viable. Do you typically see low output voltages in failures, or is the waveform missing pulses, or is it “yes, all of the above and then some”? Thanks,

POST 6Original post

The CPS generates a uniform pulsing waveform for each of the shutter teeth on the rear of the flywheel, with a single blank spot for a missing tooth for the DME to see TDC. We had a car come into the shop with a complaint of multiple codes and poor running. After scanning the car for codes, we hooked up the scope to the CPS and found several distorted waveforms as well as multiple missing ones. We pulled out the CPS and put a borescope camera in its place and then rotated the engine by hand to find both bent and missing shutter teeth on the flywheel. Turns out the owner had a clutch replacement done by a buddy, who apparently dropped the flywheel while reinstalling it. Point is that the scope data told us exactly where to look that no scan tool could ever do.

POST 7Original post

It's things like this that make one detest German cars. Is this to affect the rich mixture on startup to compensate for the 986's lack of a cold fast idle? By that I mean you have to manually rev the engine on startup if you need to do this, because there is no fast idle valve nor does the computer compensate for this, cable or drive-by-wire throttle model.

POST 8Original post

OT I don’t think you understand what this is all about. Buy yourself a Chinese electric car instead of railing against German cars.
