even without wheels, I say lower and clean for a total transformation.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all - Ive got a seal gray over graphite gray 996.1 that is pure dentist spec. Came with 17 wheels, 4 spoke steering wheel, comfort seats, all the bells and whistles really.
Ive since done the gundo hack, added sport seats, 3 spoke steering wheel, added wheel spacers, but i still feel like it lacks the proper personality and presence of a 911. The driving dynamics are fantastic, but its just not exciting to be around or look at. It doesnt touch my soul.
i also barely drive it now that I have a toddler. Basically, Im wondering what I can do to give this car more personality without breaking the bank (e.g. adding a factory aero kit probably isnt going to happen). Does anyone have any examples of a dentist spec car thats been woken up? Id love to hear some ideas / see some pictures.
Im also debating just selling it to get something fun that can fit a car seat comfortably like a GTI or if anyone has any better recommendations Im all ears
Picture attached for reference
And one more thing, whats a fair asking price for this car? Its got 120k miles and I did a pretty extensive engine refresh after buying it ($13k service). Ive probably got about $40k in the car, and I know I wont get that back.
Get new wheels. It's the easiest way to completely transform the look of the car.
There are plenty of OEM options that would run you less than $1500 for a set of good condition used wheels.
Also, clean the tires and apply some quality tire dressing... I prefer
Adam's Graphene Tire Dressing
Black tires make a huge difference in the "looks" department
Hate to see you get rid of it.

Good exterior detail for the paint and to darken the rubber and it will look brand new.
Wheels for sure! Floor mats, different colored from carpet. Clear side markers. Tinted widows. Clean the inner fender/wheel well liners. Maybe a black front Porsche hood crest and rear spoiler. Ive attached some pics of mine. As purchased and as it looks now. Only change not pictured is black carpet installation /replacement rear package tray factory grey and top gear UK sport mufflers and Flat6 silicon airbox tube and cap.

curious why you would say "dentist spec"?
I would think it would have lots of options but 17" wheels were standard and 4 spokes and comfort seats all were non options. then you say all the bells and whistles.
this car is a stripper, no bells or whistles.
just wondering if you know this and why you call it dentist spec?
nothing the matter with a stripper car btw IMO.
and if I was using a profession to characterize a rich owner I would choose Doctor. As Seinfeld said "Dentists are people that didn't get into med school"
and yes lower it, new wheels, toddlers fit in the back of 996 great btw, maybe some graphics. car seats, boosters and then right in the little back seats where seat belts fit perfect across their waist. 996 is a great bonding place with kids riding in back. my kids won't go back there now, too old.

You were logical in sorting the engine first. I like how this Aussie called his 996 "Dentist spec". Agree with the body kit direction he took. I'm happy with a stock body, 3.8 LN Nickies and Seat upgrade.
As most have said, wash it for starters. Maybe go so far as to polish the headlamps. Without doing a single thing beyond that, it will look 10X better. If you're feeling ambitious; 18" wheels/tires, spacers & lowered suspension will make look and drive like a different car.
I second the seat upgrade recommendation. Standard 997/987 seats are a big upgrade over the 996 seats, and 997/987 Sport seats are another notch up again - transformative.
Some good thoughts in here. Much appreciated!
To be clear, I was being sarcastic when I said all the bells and whistles. To me, dentist spec = no interesting options selected.
i think Ill start with a good detailing and some new wheels and see where that takes me. I will post pictures of course
its also refreshing to see what others have done to spice up their cars. Im amazed at how good some of the cars on here look!
As a toothache repairman myself, I take offense to that comment...not
My car was originally Lapis over Graphite Gray with extended leather, but no crazy options on the car.
Built out to 3.8, KW coilovers, Numeric Shifter, Fister Hack with Fabspeed X-Pipe, Rennlist special hodge-podge Aerokit, Glass out repaint. Please excuse the pre-op photos - I'm pretty sure they were taken with an old point and shoot many moons ago.
Option 1: If it doesn't touch your soul stock I would wager that it won't touch your soul on different wheels with a 1/2" suspension drop. So stop putting money in it for the next owner. Sell it and get a GTI.
Option 2: You've already committed a substantial amount to make it reliable. Adding a bit more to give it some eye appeal is worth the risk that it won't be soul-fulfilling when it's done.
Value might depend on service history and just what was done in that $13K service, but I'd figure low to mid $20K's. Is it an early car with cable throttle? Tip or 3-pedal?
lovely! No disrespect intended. My dad was an orthodontist and I would have gone to dental school if I had the grades haha!
That is quite a transformation. How much did you pay for the repaint?
Glass out was 10k cash for doing the exterior and the seat backs, and the extra front bumper and front fenders (I have a full Mk2 front end conversion in case I want to go to .2 look).
Got many quotes for 15, 20, 25, and 40k, though. It was glass out and jambs, but motor stayed in (no engine bay), and we didn't pull the interior to dip the car, etc.
Dude, forget the cosmetics BS. Do a track day at a local track and learn to appreciate the exceptional performance of a Porsche. I mean, if 130 MPH into turn 1 doesn’t do it, buy a Camry.
I bought a beat up set of OEM 17s for cheap, then had
wheelsonsite.com
spray them gloss black. Finished them with black center caps from Etsy. Just another option if you want to save some cash
