I've now fitted the console delete and made a custom box to put the heater controls in but this solution of the heater controls in the console delete carpet looks so much more elegant, however, I can't work out how it is achieved as there's simply not enough room behind there for the length of the control unit.

I used a 3D printed console to save cutting up a genuine one incase it didn’t work out.

I sanded, used filler primer and then painted the delete kit and also repainted the centre console while I was at it.

In terms of solutions I used the Sony DSX-GS80 Which can be set to match the interior lighting.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Suggestion
With hindsight (and if I had read steve r’s post properly I would have cut the cable in the middle and using an IDC kit crimped on the necessary male connectors so I could then use a standard 2x8 IDC ribbon cable with 2 female ends to extend it and split it as necessary for fitting.

Head unit doesn't bother mind you though, I'm still on the factory original so getting rid of the cubby hole made no difference and I have the front door pockets.
I'm Going ahead with the GT3 console delete to create more legroom but I currently have a double din head unit (with apple car play etc) that I really like. Obviously to do the console delete the head unit has to be changed to a single din, unless someone can come up with an alternative? it looks as though there was a kit to raise the entire centre console but that is no loner available.
As far as I can tell the options are as follows:
1. Swap to single din - what parts would I need for this though and any recommendations for a single din non folding out unit with apple car play?
2. Somehow attach the heater controls to the underside of the dash in a custom cradle and cover in alcantara?
Any other suggestions welcomed
Trying to research this more and everywhere only seems to have info or sell things to go from single to double din, not the other way round as I want to do
There must be loads of single din parts knocking about as everyone's done the conversion to double!
I've done this, heater control panel part no. 996.552.677.00.01C and 2 x 996.573.501.00 brackets is what I used to move my heater controls up into the dash :thumb:
I just removed my centre consol and must up date my running thread.
The continental streams music and does an ok job with phone calls without a mic but isn't car play. Looks great lit up in orange!
Thanks for part numbers.
And looks like the continental is the best option to look OEM.
Final query is then is this direct plug and play or do I need an adapter? I don't really want to start running cables etc to the speakers or frunk. There is a cd changer (that I'm not bothered about using) and what appears to be an amp in there but the car doesn't have Bose.
I bought the Continenttal direct from their web-site and this adapter from a company called dynamic sounds.
https://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/con...ystem-amplifier-adaptor.html?search=ct53-po01
I sent them pictures in of the connectors and they told me what I needed. I am sure many companies can advise.
I have a thread about the head unit and some more pictures in my running report.
If you want to put a DAB Ariel in the car, Continental do a DAB version as well.
Good luck
This was my solution. Blaupunkt 470. Only downside is the screen is blue but it does phone, dab, connects directly to the amp via 4 x pre outs
Re heater controls - could you use the old landrover defender radio solution
https://www.retrocarstuff.com/shop/...eEKvlLU5c8LbZs2T-Hj6soEdoHYNLCJcaAiysEALw_wcB
Would also make a cubby box.... Just finding one which matches the plastic or cover it in black plastidip
You will also want 9965522311101, it's the radio frame but for two single dins rather than the PCCM one which is a proprietary size close to double din.
Other option you may like, if you don't mind a console riser is the function first offering. you can keep your double din and climate control.
best single din solution of a 996 has to be a PCCM (not PCCM+), expensive but Porsche OEM equipment, Carplay, TomTom maps, DAB ect all in a single din format designed by Porsche.
Just to say having converted my old Boxster from PCM to single din and 996 from single DIN to PCM to PCCM+ and done the GT3 delete when I did the Boxster. It's honestly not worth it, all it does is take functionality away and provide no real leg room except then you are parked up and resting your legs.
Both times I went single DIN I ended up switching back to double(PCM/PCCM) having a cubby to throw your phone and access to double din size maps for navigation on road trips makes ownership more enjoyable than a couple inches of leg room at rest, for the price of the GT3 delete and the value of your existing double DIN you could also cover yourself a long way to getting a PCCM+. sorry to go on a tangent.
Completely diasagree. One of the best things I've done was getting rid of the center console for driving.
Head unit doesn't bother mind you though, I'm still on the factory original so getting rid of the cubby hole made no difference and I have the front door pockets.
Thanks guys. Great idea about the underdash box, i've ordered one (£5 from Amz) and will see how it looks when offered up with the console delete, may require some cutting to the new carpet to get it to look like the function first offering.
On the function first, you don't seem to be able to buy that kit anymore, otherwise would have probably gone for that!
I'll keep all the double din bits anyway and if it doesn't work can always revert back.
I also disagree about the delete being a waste of time. I'm over 6 foot and the centre console is completely where I want my leg to be. I was always banging my hand into my leg steering or pushing my leg uncomfortably into the console. Deleting it allowed me to drive the car in a much more enthusiastic manner and was more comfortable on longer trips.
I extended the seat heater controls to run to rear blanks and moved the climate up. I'm just waiting for the console replacement in natural brown to finish the job. (Special order)
In terms of solutions I used the Sony DSX-GS80 Which can be set to match the interior lighting. Not perfect but happy with outcome. Rear USB which I ran a lighting cable through dash to drivers side of dash. Microphone is wired to OEM position.
I'll post some pics later.
Hello,
I am waiting to do this mod to my 996 2004. I currently have the heater controls at the bottom of the centre console, with the CD storage tray above it. I also have the PCM Head unit Sat Nav Double Din, which will be removed for a Single Din head unit.
I think i have all the correct parts below but unsure if i need anything else for the Single Din head unit, which will sit under the header controls?
Centre console delete kit cover 1 x 98655224102A03
Centre console delete kit 1 x 98655211302A10
Brackets 2 x 996.573.501.00
Heater control panel part no. 1 x 996.552.677.00.01C
Thank you,
Phil
One thing that's always stopped me from doing the console delete is lack of switch space. With a cab, heated seats, and PSE, there aren't enough slots in the horseshoe for all the switches I need.
Is there are cunning solution for this, or do people just disconnect one of the lesser used switches?
Thanks for the feedback. I've now fitted the console delete and made a custom box to put the heater controls in but this solution of the heater controls in the console delete carpet looks so much more elegant, however, I can't work out how it is achieved as there's simply not enough room behind there for the length of the control unit.
For the time being I've velcroed the box to the underside in various locations to see how it looks. In honesty it doesn't look great (would look better once covered in alcantra!) but I want it to look as factory as possible, not a home bodge in the garage.....
Any thoughts of recommendations where to go from here!? I'm thinking my only real option are to ditch the double din (that's about Issue as it won't come out!!!) or go back as was
I’ve got the single din PCCM plus unit with Apple car play, looks stockley and works fantastically. I e not done the console delete as I value the cubby space but as you can see I have mounted the usb port usually in the cubby to under the dash so this could be an option if you still wanted Apple CarPlay. As reference I had the Continental. Unit before the PCCM.
I can't find the Function First kit mentioned here, but I really like the implementation. I wonder if anyone has found anything similar or knows where to find one? Best I could find is
this
, but it's not as clean to my eyes
I modified a delete console to accept the screen from the HVAC and the ‘batwing’ with the heated seat switches and 40th Anniversary number plaque.
Same legroom as the normal delete console but I can keep the double din headunit
I quite like that. Is the HVAC screen visible from your driving position?
It does annoy me that the gearstick obscures it in the lower position of the console
How much trouble was it to fit this? I assume the HVAC control box has very little room behind it now? Any modifications beyond cutting the hole?
Also, what is supporting the HVAC controls, if anything? Also, is this the factory center console delete?
Apologies for the litany of questions but this is what I have been searching the internet for for days.
Hi, sorry for the late reply, I’ve only just seen your questions.
I used a 3D printed console to save cutting up a genuine one incase it didn’t work out.
I cut down an original HVAC holder and bonded it into the console so the screen and batwing are attached as normal.
The screen is attached to the main board by a ribbon cable so I extended to cable and tucked the board away further under the dash.
Hope that helps
It’s very easy, you can buy kits with the sockets and the crimping tool.
Just cut the cable, crimp on 2 new sockets and plug in a new longer ribbon cable
Bit of a thread resurrection but I’m looking at making this change and curious to know if anyone has a link to the Ribbon Cable kits I’d need?
Having the controls on the console delete seems the perfect solution for me, just don’t want to take it apart and make a hash of it.
I think this is what I used

You’ll need the 2x8 connectors for the 16wire ribbon cable
Continuing the thread for those who may find it in the future.
Having just installed the Ali Express PCCM+ unit yet at 6’2” finding the leg space limited by the centre console I decided to go with the console delete kit with the cut out to allow the HVAC controls to be moved lower down as per Steve r’s post.
The console delete kit is available on eBay and I was very impressed with the quality of it both in terms of accurate fit and strength/stiffness.
Then came the difficult bit of extending the ribbon cable between the motherboard and screen of the HVAC unit. With hindsight (and if I had read steve r’s post properly I would have cut the cable in the middle and using an IDC kit crimped on the necessary male connectors so I could then use a standard 2x8 IDC ribbon cable with 2 female ends to extend it and split it as necessary for fitting.
However……. I did not read the post properly and removed both connectors of the original ribbon cable from the motherboard and screen. This proved to be very difficult and only possible by destroying them in the process. I then realised that the pins from the boards into these connectors, whilst in standard IDC 2x8 format were much shorter and thinner than an IDC pin and therefore the female to female lead I had bought would not connect properly and would just fall off and not make good connections.
This lead me to solder 32 individual IDC pins onto the 32 small pins on the 2 boards. To say this took a long time and was very frustrating would be an understatement. Either the pins would not be straight enough to then align with the IDC socket or be so close together the solder would connect 2 pins causing a short circuit or finally the heat from the soldering would cause the small pins to unsolder themselves from the boards or even better create a dry joint so the pin looked ok but actually was not making a connection!
Anyway after many attempts I got all 32 pins working at the same time and was able to fit the console delete kit with the motherboard tucked underneath it in a plastic bag for a bit of protection.
A very frustrating job but I’m now loving having full screen CarPlay, access to the HVAC controls AND somewhere to put my left leg on long journeys.
I addition as I’d already gone over to the cross connectors by the fuse panel for a switched live for the head unit I tapped off this for a feed to a MagSafe charger which I attached to the small blanking piece which comes with the delete kit.
I sanded, used filler primer and then painted the delete kit and also repainted the centre console while I was at it. This was with Plastikote Matt which doesn’t appear very matt to me so I may redo it, though I’m getting used to it.
Hope this helps someone.
