Suggestion
Wife's 981 has the paddles which are nice, but the reality is that we both pretty much drive in PDK mode, and just use the buttons / paddles for downshifts preparing for corners, or going into roundabouts.

i had a golf r and i would want to use the paddles but quickly found them a bit redundant somehow.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

ok so i decided i wanted paddles in my tip. i took the very longest route to do this and it is not even done yet. installation tomorrow fingers crossed.
i initially was going to install mercedes paddles. bought a blue 3 spoke with tiptronic to do that.
then i find the spacershop paddles. these looked more convincing to me. so then i decided to get a 3 spoke without tip buttons (they are not v good). of course then i had the nightmare of trying to find an airbag.
however all done. all received. will take to Brown's tomorrow and have them install along with new bellows for spoiler.
i wanted to show photos here as it is quite the elaborate thing (paddles). note it brings the steering wheel about 50 mm closer to the driver.
first the car (with "i wish" wheels)
then what we are replacing
new (old) steering wheel
the spacershop paddles!
OK these got installed today along with the 3 spoke sans tip buttons.
i quite liked the 4 spoke and the 3 spoke is improved over it (for mine) only because no tip buttons. i think the tip buttons are the worst of that system. so glad to see the back of them. i could easily go back to the 4 spoke frankly and might.
one thing this does is bring the steering wheel 60 mm toward driver. i sort of like this. a good part of it though is that for me it takes the steering wheel well clear of gauges so i have an interrupted view.
the paddles are brilliant. right there when your hands are on the wheel. i stick the shifter in M and it is all paddle. a heavy thunk to use them. very very good. i am not a fan of how i have lost my stalks though. they are too recessed. i have bought some "JDM" extender things in aluminium. hopefully this can be setup and not be a faff.
so driving it just now with the paddles i really liked it. it would be a tonne of fun for spirited driving and work much better than the buttons. i will try and use it quite a lot. i like having the car in manual and i see these making that easier. i have a set of mercedes paddles that i never installed. i think i have done the right thing for me here. the mercedes paddle buttons would not have satisfied long term the way this will i think. i just need to sort out stalk offset.
this looks like this (also if anyone curious those seats are not stock and are in fact 991 seats called "4 way comfort". surprisingly affordable i thought and a huge upgrade over 996 full elec seats and lighter to boot.
Looks good mate
👍
I prefer the 3 spoke wheel and paddles personally
As some may know here, I was definitely a 3 pedal bloke...until I drove a tip, then I was hooked, though the buttons were my only gripe, so I left it in auto mode
Can't remember from my .2 Tip days whether those buttons go both ways, but my 991.1 has buttons which do, and I must admit I've actually got used to them now. Wife's 981 has the paddles which are nice, but the reality is that we both pretty much drive in PDK mode, and just use the buttons / paddles for downshifts preparing for corners, or going into roundabouts. Perhaps sacrilege, but it works for us.....
3 spoker in 996 definitely better looking of the wheel options...
The buttons on my .2 were both ways on both sides. I really like your solution, it looks great. I swapped mine for paddles as well, but went with a Momo and Works Bell hub with the offset spacer....
the paddles are a big success.
it is not the fact of paddles that are the success. it is these specific paddles. that is, in use they are so good that i actually use them. i have always wanted to drive the car in manual mode, but the buttons somehow made it a very short term thing. as in, turn on manual mode, use it a bit, feel like it was all a bit redundant, switch back to auto. i think it didn't become second nature at all.
i had a golf r and i would want to use the paddles but quickly found them a bit redundant somehow. i think the ergonomics are fundamental to how sticky manual mode is. if i had little mercedes things i think it wouldn't be as used. is my guess.
on w/e we drove down to shellharbour and then did a drive on saturday up mac pass and down jamberoo rd. all driving, to shellharbour, fun drive on saturday morning and then retun home done in manual mode. very simple! down on left and up on right. nice action. very satisfying. looking for it to become unconscious.
my gosh the tipper hauls from 1st gear. off you go and before you know it you're in second gear and headed towards arrest.
