I'm having the bumper repaired since it's structurally sound.

I've done a fair amount of checking around for a bumper, decided to get it resprayed, the body guy thought is was completely usable.

While some may steer you direct to a supplier $$$$$ I would check Facebook market place, Craigslist for OEM bumpers that are being parted out.

Check the inner door jam on the driver door and check the build date, looks like it might be a '98' build

I would recommend an OEM, not fiberglass, if you must replace it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone, I picked up a bargain ($18K) 1999 996, 118K, LN Eng IMS fix, drove it home 450 miles So Cal to AZ, no issues. Cosmetically, lots of scuffs, a few dings, nice interior, cold a/c, needs a front bumper cover, rims are very rough, lots of curb rash, but a solid 5 IMHO. Questions : what are options for a replacement bumper (i.e. stock or aftermarket, update to a later model, etc ). Id like to find a decent used unit if anyone has one? Regarding wheels, Id like to keep it stock, is it worth having the wheels refinished or are they not worth the trouble? I appreciate the wisdom and input on anything pertinent!
Great that a 996 is getting love. Post some pictures..They loved to be loved and efforts are worth it. Factory Porsche is the best front bumper. If you want to mod then the factory aero would be best. The factory turbo bumper reqires work to fit, aquired taste but the 40th Anniversary Edition, is a factory precedent. Paintless dent removal, partial respray. A professional detail and ceramic coat will give you a useable classic, don't go so far as to not enjoy using driving your bargain. Any reputable non over night wheel repairer can make your grazed wheels good enough. I'd get Michelins in sizes that protect your rims.
Have you had a shop tell you the front bumper is not salvageable?
I would recommend an OEM, not fiberglass, if you must replace it.
Hard to say about the wheels. Have an expert look at them. You may get lots of opinions, but no one has seen them, so any opinions are uninformed. OEM wheels tend to be pretty stout. That's kind of important if your roads are not so good.
It is a nice find, drives beautifully, just needs a bit of cut and polish and some minor dent removal. I'm having the bumper repaired since it's structurally sound.
Two unique girls!
Paint is original, considering Fuchs since they remind me of a '74 coupe I owned a few years back. I regret selling that one.
Brave to do that once you start reading in this forum, the fact that your car didn't blow up is a good sign
All jokes aside
While some may steer you direct to a supplier $$$$$ I would check Facebook market place, Craigslist for OEM bumpers that are being parted out. Why incur the extra $$$$ with paint not included to get a deal on a used bumper that may have zero damage.
If you like the wheels and want to restore them, I would get them refinished. Those Turbo twists were the rim for the MK1. I would recommend in Phoenix

He's worked on a lot of my 90s bmx parts: rims, handlebars , etc but he does everything and was going to get my rims done by him at one point
So right! Too many "yikes" posts, not for the faint of heart to hop in and drive without completing an extensive checklist!! Thanks for the tip on your contact in PHX, saving the rims is a real possibility, at least for now. I've done a fair amount of checking around for a bumper, decided to get it resprayed, the body guy thought is was completely usable.
Congrats on the 996, and welcome to the club! My gen1 OEM front bumper has been hanging in the garage, unused for close to 10 years. Has genuine TechArt corner pieces. Pics

. Let me know if interested. Also have various OEM parts in boxes from several iterations of mods across the last 16 years.
Youre correct, 3/98, is that significant? The paint is original and still has some gloss, Ive had the front bumper off and the head and tail lights out and theres no body damage that I can see. A bit of a rough diamond, looking forward to digging into it and getting it refined.

The early build advantages are in this thread. Seems placebo, but I notice bank vault doors, light weight. Especially as, mines a 2 air bag model, I went to light seats, and exhaust. No rattles in 2024. No traction control. I prefer the IMS solution even on a dual row. Cable throttle, and non electric frunk and hood openers. As if some air cooled DNA carried over to the early models. Australia is not an informed market and late models factory serviced, at high intervals are valued higher.
