Suggestion
Its more the loud noise at idle from the gearbox chatter in the first few secs of the test drive video.

Was not like that in my 993 and I understand if you do it with the right 997 LWFW clutch parts there is less noise do not quote me but think indies typically recommend using a sprung hub clutch disc (often sourced from 997 4.0 GT3 RS) to handle dampening.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there, need some input on those who have done it.
purchased this set from design911, which states that it works with stock clutch set. all in all everything is correct but if i stack them side by side there is a difference in height - about 10mm - the stock one is higher, the rpm sensor, and starter teeth align perfectly. i have the gt2 slave cylinder. will it all work or is a release fork or different release bearing required. items are in perfect condition so understandably don't want to spend money if i don't need to.

I had different Aasco LWFW for 5000 miles before eventually the clutch blew up causing £5000 damage. JZM said that should have used it with a longer clutch fork from GT3 RS as my clutch fork was broken too. Worst mod I have ever had on 997.1 turbo it sounded like it was going to blow the engine and gearbox up. Never again!

I think the 997 GT2 RS and or 4.0 GT3 RS set up the way to do it if you are going this route. For me it was properly crap experience ruined the car with Aasco LWFW. Makes the car harder to drive. I had a LWFW in my 993 9m RS loved it.

That, and the Numeric shifter (and more importantly the Numeric cables) are what transmit the majority of what you're hearing in that video, into the cabin.
Fine if you want the interior of your car to sound like cement mixer or a WRC car, but it kind of defeats the object of buying a nice refined car to start off with ...
Dual plate clutches can be noisy too, but at least the friction plates Protomotive spec have sprung hubs.
I’m with you. They’re bloody awful.
I had a 996 Mk1 Clubsport with singlemass and now a Mk2 Comfort with dual mass.
One of the last big jobs left to do (not that it needs it yet) will be clutch and probably flywheel, plus diff rebuild.
I won’t be going singlemass. For me (road use only) the pros don’t outweigh the cons.
As much as it would rev quicker and things, I think it would just be fiddling with things for the sake of it. They make the car sound like a bag of spanners.
everyone tends to gush over the mechanicalness of them, like the 911R is so amazing and the gt3s with 964RS flywheel and what not. i will not use this car in city traffic as it is annoying in itself nowadays. and i can always go back. from the world of bmws the one time i didn't like single mass was on an old diesel
that was very vibraty, but on petrol engines apart from the little chatter on idle, it didn't feel so bad.
Its more the loud noise at idle from the gearbox chatter in the first few secs of the test drive video. With Aacso LWFW I had exactly the same noise. The warmer the car gets the more diesel noise at idle. Was not like that in my 993 and I understand if you do it with the right 997 LWFW clutch parts there is less noise do not quote me but think indies typically recommend using a sprung hub clutch disc (often sourced from 997 4.0 GT3 RS) to handle dampening. Without the dual-mass flywheel to absorb crankshaft harmonics, the springs in the disc hub are essential to absorb gear lash and minimize the unavoidable "diesel-like" gear rattle at idle. No noise once on the move vut the clutch is more on off and you have to get used to it stalling at take off not unusual. Fine for a track orientated weekend turbo but not so good for a road car. Really depends on you power goals and use. If using a high-torque setup I understand a non-sprung
996 GT2 clutch disc
paired with the Sachs 764 pressure plate results in less gearbox chatter compared to the standard rigid 098 disc found in basic sachs 2.5 kit I have.
I'd be more converned about my 23 year old engine and gearbox surviving good luck!
In fairness Mark, a lot of that was the oil scavenge pumps, they utilise straight cut teeth on the gears. Whilst I was under the car with Danny at Unit 9 after he'd done some work on it and we'd been out roadtesting it. It was crazily rattly under there !! So much so I commented to Danny.
He said nothing, went and got a stethoscope and told me to plug it into my ears and put the probe on the scavenge pump housings ...
"'Kin 'ell" I exclaimed. They were
that
noisy.
The 964 RS still beats the lot of them for transmission chatter/rattle mind.
Hi Henry. Long time no see. I hope things are all good where you are.
Yes I remember you explaining that to me many moons ago, although I had forgotten.
And yep they were bloody noisy. That CS sounded awful. My black car does it a bit but nothing like the red one. Our old mate YKs red one did it even less.
I loved the feel of the LWFW as coming from bikes, the less inertia and faster revving an engine is, the better.
But no, I won’t be fitting one to the Mk2.
As said, the pros don’t outweigh the cons for me now.
I’m getting old and boring, or rather even older and even more boring.
