I fitted Philips Xtreme Ultinon gen2’s in 2021 but only got a year before they started to flicker and fail.

I think the issue is the cover for the headlights was only a couple mm’s from the fan so cooling was not ideal.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone tried the genuine Porsche H7 LED (Item no.: PCG631137H) replacement for standard halogen bulbs for the 996 / 986? According to a German forum, and with help from AI, they seem to be made by Philips and are very similar to the Philips Ultinon Pro6000 Boost H7 . Anyone tried the Philips? I'm very intrigued as these seem fix the issue with beam pattern with cheap LEDs plus both come with all sorts of European approvals. I'm wondering how significant the improvement is over standard halogens, if any. https://shop.porsche.com/gb/en-GB/p/porsche-h7-led-PCG631137H-B/ LED Abblendlicht bald auch im 996?

POST 2Original post

I don’t know, but will be interested what others say. My only concern is yellowing of the internal lens due to excessive heat.

POST 3Original post

I can almost guarantee you they are the exact same thing with a Porsche logo etched rather than than Philips just like the Porsche Ctek chargers. The cases are identical except the logo etch and I highly doubt Porsche bought the Philips LED’s and plagiarised the design. I fitted Philips Xtreme Ultinon gen2’s in 2021 but only got a year before they started to flicker and fail. In that year however the light was good and the beam pattern was preserved unlike the cheap ones. I think the issue is the cover for the headlights was only a couple mm’s from the fan so cooling was not ideal. The newer ones likely have better more efficient LED tech that doesn’t chuck out as much heat given the smaller heatsinks. My assumption is the Porsche ones may include some adapters in the the box as the h7 bulb holders need a minor modification to fit otherwise, if modded mine to fit the old bulbs, see the thread below for details. Thread 'Philips Ultinon Pro9000 LED Bulbs - 996 projectors' 1 Mar 2021 Having been all inspired by some of you upgrading projectors etc with retrofitlabs kits - but being inherently lazy - I've been casually interested in how some of these retrofit LED bulbs have developed. I have halogen projectors already in my 996.2 C4S. Philips brought out their Ultinon Pro9000 led bulbs in various flavours last year and I decided to commit to the £135 purchase price. Out of lockdown boredom. The most attractive feature (or lack of) was the driverless design which, I figured, would mean no issues getting everything inside the light assembly itself thus maintaining the... Teffers Replies: 5 Forum: Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005) Worth noting: “The Porsche H7 LED is the original replacement for H7 halogen lamps, with road approval in Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Croatia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Slovenia, Spain and Austria.” These aren’t actually UK road legal like all other retrofit LED’s and are an MOT fail depending on how strict your tester is.

POST 4Original post

As above anyone know if these are hotter to run than standard H7? I have brand new headlights and at £1600 a piece I’m concerned about burning the inside lens which happens a lot on .1 headlights.

POST 5Original post

Much cooler than halogen bulbs. A typical 55W H7 bulb turns that power into about 5-10% light and 90-95% into heat. So that’s like a little 50W heater in there. While these Philips LED’s I believe draw only around 16W and LED’s turn 30-50% of that power into light and around 50-70% into heat. So even in the worse end of the efficiency it’s producing about a fifth of the heat. So in short these will output a faction of the heat a regular bulb will. Also LED headlight replacements produce less UV.

POST 6Original post

They will be good in a projector lens, but will be awful in a standard headlight. Tried the Philips in mine and they just increased the brightness but glare was awful and ultimately doesn’t actually improve your headlight. It’s like a brighter light, with no additional reach. Pointless.

POST 7Original post

Good to know, I was just about to buy some, do you have the Porsche ones or just LEDs? I wondering why they would promote if they done achieve a better light.

I had the ridiculously expensive Philips Ultinon. I don’t have them anymore and after reading up and understanding the physics of it all, I then understand why other drivers were angrily flashing me. After getting over the ‘ooh they’re much brighter’ you start to realise that actually you’re not seeing any further down the road.
