Strange, my 99 C4 came from the factory with PSE at least i assume she did by the exhaust button on the dash but was swapped a few years ago for designtek system by previous owner but my tips were standard smaller oval, since changed by me for larger Dansk style tips.

I didn't expect it to feel any different, but I have to say gear changes feel even smoother after the Mobil PTX replacement (it genuinely felt great before).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

first impressions are no difference really other than a little extra cabin vibration on over run.
As I pulled my current 996 out of winter storage this week I thought it was about time I recorded a thread on my progress.
Whilst I have had many "fun" cars from boxsters, mustangs, M3's, z4s etc one car has always stuck with me since I sold it 10 years ago. My 996 c2; I had this for 3 years and used it loads whilst also conducting a lot of work on it (I was a mechanic by trade, now an engineer in the car industry).
I decided to get another 911 Carrera in 2022, I lost track of how many 997s I looked at which claimed to be good but in reality we're really not (so many trying to hide borescore).
I stumblod across my new car on autotrader (996 c4) in December 2023, for sale privately in Hertfordshire and it looked really nice with a good spec.
I spent a good amount of time checking it over and the bellow highlights it state at purchase:
Good
71k miles
Aero kit
PSE
Hardback seats
Black on Black
Sport classic wheels
Manual gearbox rebuild @ 54k miles (£3k+)
Front to back brake lines replaced @71k miles (£1k+)
Replacement Factory Engine from Porsche Guildford @ 31k miles (£13k+)
Plus loads more
Bad
Drivers door and front bumper have had paint in the past.
Air conditioning does not work
Sunroof switch button - poorly fitted
Outer Sunroof seal has a tear
Tyres have 6-7mm tread but are 17 years old!
What stood out for me was the seller. He seemed a genuine honest chap, with a decent car collection of more expensive stock. My car was being sold to make way in his enormous (heated & dehumidified) garage for something new.
He had owned the car 17 years! 10 of these years it was sorned and kept in the above heated dehumidified garage not used!!!
Due to its lack of use, job number one for me was to give it a thorough service & inspection on a friends ramp.
Engine Oil & filter change
Water pump
Low temp Thermostat
Coolant flush & replace
Brake fluid change
Spark plugs
Coil packs
Air oil separator
Then I used it for a couple of months, just to get some confidence in it and work out a plan for its long term maintenance.
First decision was suspension.
She's been treated to a set of these adjustable koni dampers from Gert at Carnewal. I like the fact they are adjustable but honestly only have them about 5 of clicks away from full soft for the road. I also liked that they had been powder coated black to look OE underneath.
These were fitted with new top mounts and damper hardware (washers bearings etc).
All was going well and the car honestly felt like a much much younger vehicle than its age. Until .... hesitation and misfires struck!!!
Literally as I was about to leave the country for work for a couple of weeks.
I phoned around for someone to look at it (I have a few connections but nobody could get it in whilst I was away).
I stumbled across Daniel James performance cars not far from me (I'm in Benfleet Essex).
Dropped it off with them in the black Porsche corner (see pic).
Whilst I think it only needed a fuel pump my hands were tied and she got a genuine MAF/ fuel pump and oxygen sensors.
She has been in dry storage since November until this week. Quick wash and obligatory photo with one of the bikes.
I do have a fair few more jobs to tackle to make her what I want, but even now I'd say she's a very good example of an old 996, which I would really struggle to replace.
They are what comes with the dealer fit PSE (I have the invoice). I was going to swap them out but they have grown on me. If I find a set of big ovals EP4110s I'll get them and probably swap between both sets depending on my mood.

Mine were dealer fit at about 2 years old from memory. And the invoice did mention the tips, I'll dig it out and find out what they referred to them as. They are Porsche but most would prefer big ovals. On my C2 I had one fall off never be seen again!
Ah yes with the slightly lower ride height
Looks very nice, great find, sounds like just the sort of person you want to buy a car from !
Best of luck with it
I have downloaded the Porsche owners app... not much use on these old cars but does confirm the options included on the car in case anyone is ever looking.
Minor update- received my CoC from Porsche Germany and after notifying tfl the car is ULEZ compliant. Not that I plan to use it within the zone, but thought it a good idea to have it done.
I am doing a little interior tidy up. Nothing drastic as I don't think it requires it. Mainly just a tidy up of the most worn areas. I have taken the centre console out whilst adding one of Alex's SSKs.
Given the whole thing a machine polish- will apply some wax before refitting.... this then spiralled into more work.

The ash tray surround and switch piece both had a chip in each.
So I had some paint matched and have re sprayed them. Awaiting the lacquer to cure before hitting these with the polisher too.
Now the worst bit- the gear knob looked the worst of the entire interior with scratches all over it.
This is now separated and I'm refinishing it as we speak- hopefully the outcome will be worth the effort.
Showed the leather some love with a drop of leather soap.
I am not sure if it's worth doing yet but has anyone successfully separated the handbrake aluminium section to refinish it? I haven't taken it out yet but can't obviously see how to separate the leather from the ally?
Well the gear knob came out great! Before and after shown. I'm on the lookout for some tired examples of these tequipment gearknob and handbrakes to restore as I quite enjoyed it- let me know if you have any for sale!
All back together and I'm happy with the results. Feels much fresher now. Fortunately there are no other areas requiring work on the interior as it all in really good shape.
Haven't posted many pics of the outside of the car since I bought it.
So after a wash and wax today here she is. Although it was very sunny today so had to adjust the pic to remove some of the glare.
You will notice I have added a set of Litronic headlights £££ to improve visibility at night - they are still poor compared to my new cars but a huge improvement over the halogens.
There aren't any changes I really want to do astehtically as I prefer an OE car (or close to it).
The only things I'm tempted to do is lower it slightly and possibly grab some cheap winter wheels to save the mint sport classics in poorer weather (although it is normally stored through winter).
Very nice, is the top of the knob bare metal?
If so I'm wondering if it might corrode, I had this happen with a Momo knob in a previous car as my hands tend to get a bit sweaty when on it!
You might be right - time will tell. Easy enough to re polish if it does and ceramic coat or maybe lacquer if needed. Will keep an eye on it and address as needed.
With all this hot weather I decided it was time to tackle the A/C. Both condensers and drier + all O-rings replaced, thorough inspection of the radiators and replacement of both front fan resistors as they didn't look great. Typically of me I didn't remember to take any photos until it was all going back together.
I'm actually going on holiday shortly so won't have a chance to recharge it till I'm back- fingers crossed!
I picked up some of these 993 rs style semi solid engine mounts from type911. Never had these before and lots of people seem to use them..... first impressions are no difference really other than a little extra cabin vibration on over run. Not sure I'd bother again but another piece of the puzzle renewed.
Now what feels like ages ago I picked up some Mobil PTX 75w90 from
@Dovoda75
(September)as he had bought the 20L that seems required to buy this in.
I dropped the car off tonight for my friend and best mechanic I know (yes I am a mechanic too), to carry out this years service (I don't like getting dirty these days). He's not doing it until Friday but will be normal service + gearbox and front diff oil change. It's now on 76k miles meaning I've done 5k in 2 years. Think she will be sold in the new year
Took some decent photos in the 5 mins of sunshine today
the colour code is L744 (black metallic) which has a nice bronze undertone which never comes out in photos.
Picked the car up from its service. I didn't expect it to feel any different, but I have to say gear changes feel even smoother after the Mobil PTX replacement (it genuinely felt great before).
I was suprised as the car has only done 22k since the gearbox rebuild therefore didn't expect any difference really.
I don't know what oil went in after the rebuild therefore, this is probably why.
75w90 Mobil PTX for the win
Brought the car out of winter hibernation over the weekend.
Giving it a thorough arch liner out - deep clean in preparation to actually tax and use it a bit! I'll be tackling this slowly when time allows, but there is nothing needing rectification, simply a clean and seal.
With the liners out it gives a good opportunity for some inner sill inspection. Thankfully completely corrosion free, so they will be getting a clean and and spray with some anti corrosion wax.
Difficult to photograph inside the sill with an iPhone
Yeah i usually get " what's up with it " when i use jack stands to clean the wheels, brakes, suspension and undercarriage
they just don't get it most folk.
All buttoned back up. A thorough clean inside the arches and underbody sealant with bilt hamber dynamic UC.
I also applied liberal amounts of cavity wax into the sills whilst I had access. Better safe than sorry.
Whilst I had it on axle stands, I fitted some h&r springs I've had for over a year. Very subtle drop from where it was before. Quick drive around the block they don't really feel any different than than the standard ones removed. I have the ability to adjust the dampers once I've used it a little. Currently still set very soft (for comfort) but will tweak them in the future to find my happy spot.
Pleased to have it back on the driveway ready for some use... maybe

Just to keep this updated - I actually drove the car today
A new set of Michelin PS5's fitted. Car is running very well with no outstanding jobs and a pleasure to own/ drive.
A while back I promised
@Interference Fit
that I would post a picture of the 1 of 1 grey front splitter he kindly made for me. I already have 2 black ones (one OE & and one from IF still in the packaging). I wanted a grey one as the black ones blend into the background on a black car. Anyway here it is. Perfection as expected from IF - cheers buddy!
Said no-one, ever.
Thanks, I appreciate the endorsement.
The reality is that these are a labour of love that is driven by a personal, emotional investment. Without a car in the race, I struggle to conjure the enthusiasm to problem solve in the same way as I do when I'm staring at my own car, asking 'how do I improve / fix / develope that' etc.
I afford myself that luxury as it's purely a winter hobby. If I found myself without gainful employment and considered a structured commercial venture, then something like a 996.2 version would become an obvious choice, but I'd need to consider the commercials accordingly.
Andrew,
Sounds like you could create a beast of a business here like Clarkson's Pub and shop !
Sounds like and hopefully you are fit and well again.
Personally i'm looking forward to you getting another 911 and the detailed updates as you did last year.
All the very best.
Rog
Cheers buddy. I've got a surgery toward the end of the year which will hopefully draw a line under things, but yes, I'm back to full fitness.
My next 911 should be with me late October, so fingers crossed it all pans out.
