Always liked the produce and thought a trip over there and back could link in a few decent roads and be a good excuse to bring a few bottles back. In spite of Saturday's weather, it was a hoot.

Thought it was a perfect road for the turbo with loads of long sweepers.

Was blowing an absolute hooley on Saturday, although the car never put a foot wrong. We'd come off the M4 and up through Ogmore Vale, which was good until we hit a section where the wind had stripped all the pine needles off the trees and covered the tarmac with them; from bitter experience mountain biking, I knew these needle bearings were a zero grip scenario.
As for the sheep, there's ditches along the sides of most of the A4061 north of Penderyn, so you had to be ready for the odd, daft sheep to leap out, but mostly it was a perfect drive for the car. Very enjoyable.

Was out in my 987 this week. Literally went through this exact conversation in my head (I may even have voiced some of it out loud, I was on my own).
Its a silly colour. Flat Six. Mid engined. Manual. Near as damn-it 300hp. Sounds incredible. Kids on the street smile and wave at it. It makes me unbelievably happy. And it was 12 grand.
Gave it a little tap on the dash top as I got out. Love this car.

Couldn't agree more about getting into a 986 or 987, they are the affordable modern classics to have right now. Absolute bargain next to any car below (MX/Z4) or above (911) the price range that they currently sit ie closer to MX5 than 911. Id've had to put another 20k in to get into a 911 of similar condition and spec as my 987.1 for very little difference in performance and cant justify it for the prestige or extra seats as much as I'd still love a 997.
Photographer for the club did a fantastic job, I'm biased but I thought out of all the cars on the drive only the old yellow 911 and the silver 997 looked nicer than mine front on
The 987 caymans look nice at the front too. Closely followed by the 991s and 981 caymans. Not a fan of the modern lights and grilles on the 992s and 718s.

If you distill all the bulls
t about driving Porsches and throw the end product away, and start from scratch, about what really feels fun, at road legal speeds, the answer is Boxster or Carrera 2. I am increasingly drawn to early 986, just because they re such underrated bargains.
The only problem I see with 986 is actually finding a decent one, I suspect a 987 is somewhat easier. A mate has been through it with a 996 Carrera 2, he spent about two years looking and ended up with quite a few compromises to actually get something in the end that he was happy with-he looked at a multitude of dogs dinners that were supposedly mint.
I think any early Boxster could also throw up all the spend a GT3 would as well to get to mint, essentially needing a lot of the things you did with your 997 GT3.
An early one would make a lovely foil to your 991 RS however-a lovely two car garage!
Plenty of cars to choose from.
From the lowest mileage examples at independent specialist vendors :
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/20275825
To sensible miles, with some decent factory options :
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/20357866
To the very cheapest "project" material ... :
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/20629302
And plenty in between.
The 987s is the only one i haven't let go. Had it from new and it's a brilliant thing of beauty that does it all. They're incredible value right now (and i think i've undervalued mine) yet everyone still raves about them - CH does bring it up a few times on his pod.

Funny you say that, this was the FIRST 987 Boxster I'd ever looked at, ever sat in and ever driven. I looked at a cheaper Cayman the day before which was tatty and had a ridiculously loud drone inducing 2-3k (deafening) sports exhaust which billowed a mushroom cloud of white smoke when he cold started it.
When the owner rolled this one out of the garage and saw the history book, exterior, hood and stone leather interior leather condition ccombind with no smoke from a cold start I was going to buy it whatever happened.
I could easily have spent the rest of the summer looking for one as good and never found it and not had this summer in it, OK it needs 3k of work to get it mint underneath and I could have got some more money off had I prodded and got inspections but sometimes you just have to crack on and trust your gut.
I don't regret it at all as spending 2 years looking for a car is painful.
tenmantaylor said:

You can’t really put a price on the missing miles-the person in question went all over the country and further (even into NI) to look at some minters and usually paying for inspections on them as well.
The people who sold me my GT3 reckon they can sell mine to some of their customers within 24 hours but as I said last week, where does that get me?
Without a car and the enjoyment that comes from using it is where.

Agreed, 986s are stellar value. They make 996s look expensive, too. £10k will buy you a completely immaculate low mile 986 3.2 or a rotten, thorough sheddy 996 on its last legs.
Never heard of a 986 with scoring. Not sure about the 2.7, but all the 2.5s and 3.2s have ferrous rather than plastic piston coating and for all practical purposes, do not score. They do have IMS issues, albeit that's a preventable issue at reasonable costs, the 3.2 suffers from cracked heads and the occasional snapped chain. But they're not too bad, overall.
The only Boxster that is prone to scoring is the late 987.1 when they briefly upgraded the engine to 3.4 litres for about 18 months from late 2006 to early 2008, when the 987.2 came in with the new 9A1 lump.

It's much, much (much!) easier to find a nice, low-mile 986 than a 996. There are far, far more around than nice low mile 996s, for whatever reason. Possibly because 986s were more often bought as occasional use toys and 996s more likely ti have been dailied. But, whatever, there are far more low mile, tidy 986s around than 996s.

tenmantaylor said:

The 5% is a made up number, don't know where it comes from. At this point, comfortably more than 5% of 3.4+ M97 lumps have experienced significant scoring and been scrapped or rebuilt. It's an issue inherent to the engine design. Variability from one engine to another is thought to be a consequence of both manufacturing variance involving the size of the silicon particles in the Lokasil block / bore material that are ejected from the cylinders walls and begin the process of breaking down the piston coating, which in turn leads to scoring, and then external factors.
Those might be things like lugging the engine, observing the long 20k official oil service intervals rather than more frequent changes and the climate. Re climate, that involves the cooling system. On the M97, the thermostat is on the inlet side receiving coolant from the radiators rather than on the outlet from the hot engine. There's an argument that this causes a problem in cooler climates because it causes the thermostat to close prematurely and / or remain closed for too long, leading to hotspots in the engine, particularly on bank 2 which has poorer coolant flow. And it's that overheating which causes the protective oil layer to become too thin, leading to metal-to-metal contact between the already damaged piston skirt and the cylinder wall.
This is possibly why scoring seems to have been more widespread earlier and better known about in the mostly cooler UK for many years than, for example, the mostly hotter US. It's also why a low temp stat is a popular mod.
TL;DR:
It's inherent to the engine and more a case of when than if. That said, some engines do hit 100k plus without scoring. But equally there are examples of engines over 100k failing with scoring, so it's not a case of passing through a danger window and coming out the other side. If your engine is fine on 81K, it'll probably be OK for a while yet, at which point it'll be at a mileage that engines generally viewed as reliable might let go, so probably not worth worrying about.
But that when not if assumption isnt true, way more would have failed by now. Some clearly go fine their whole life.
Either way, a 3.9 would be nice and probably worth the big bill at Hartech, such great cars to keep on the road. Assuming they are as reliable as people say the Hartech rebuild 997/987s will be the 993s of the 2030s probably.

Would have to disagree. Nobody knows the true figure. But I’d say at absolute minimum a third of 3.4+ M97 cars have already failed. And probably a good deal more. There are zillions of cars out there with rebuild or replacement lumps under warranty.
Nobody knows... but you do? And a zillion have failed?
Its similar to the rod bearings on the S65. Its overhyped and not guarenteed to happen.
Maybe how many left or some other method for getting actual numbers might be a good start point. IE if there's 10/20/30% less left of the produced M97 cars still on the road than the other engined boxsters then that might be a basis for a logical guess.

Nobody has a precise figure. I have an informed broad brush view and you asked for a view. But you seem to already have your own fixed view, so not sure why you asked when you are only going to accept an answer you like. What’s the point?!
How Many Left data won’t help. Zillions (yes, precisely zillions!) have been rebuilt. How Many Left obviously won’t capture those.
Loving the Boxster photos. This was my very first Porsche back in 2003. I utterly loved it and only sold it as I ran out of money. I went to a 993 after this, oh how I wish I had kept that too!

I can fully push any car on any of my favourite roads. I was a hell of a driver in my day, age and illness have obviously taken its toll but I can still travel at 9/10s which is more than sufficient for me.
People lose their lives on the track as well. The day that I attended on Saturday there was a lot of adrenalin and aggression. It was obvious one driver in particular was going to create havoc and he did.

Iconic car ruined!
As a fan of all things 911 related, I can see the appeal of the electrified version pictured.
Using it around a city, it becomes a fantastic looking car thats easy to run and maintain. Not everyone wants to race the things. I can easily see the appeal.
Getting the work done at Cotswold. Bought the koni sypder kit and 200 cell cats from carnewal which they are fitting. 8 of the 12 bolts snapped lol. Oh well, all adding long term value to a great condition example. Will be 6k into fixes and improvements soon.
Full service Inc plugs and packs at lap 911
Cotswold also did crossovers too.
Now I know why they call it poverty pork!
In Bath with Mrs D for the weekend, we didn’t realise but it’s the Jane Austen festival at the moment,
Interesting juxtaposition - postmodern some might say. Not my 991, but the person who owns it had numerous people leaning on it, brushing up against it and lots of avian f
ks have recently dumped on it.

I had 11 out of the 12 manifold bolts sheared on my old 986 S. Did the job myself over 3 days with a borrowed jig. What a bastuard! Got there in the end.

2 Month in Boxster update
Had the Carnewal 200 cell cat manifolds, koni adjustable shocks, spyder springs and half the entire suspension arms replaced this week. Almost double the cost I expected but worth it, the ride and handling is like new now, so tight and responsive.
Then the next day took it straight to DMS near Bournemouth who tune many UK based Boxster and Cayman road and race cars on their dyno. They ran a before test then had a mechanic fit IPD plenum, GT3 throttle body and induction kit.
Results with the kit and tune are beyond expectations, the before line is after the 200 cell Carnewal manifolds were fitted, after lines with the kit, plenum along with a map written for the car. 329hp and 282 lb-ft are the new headlines in old money. Even improves the redline beyond 7k now
Now also beyond the claimed power and torque of a 997 Carrera 3.6 (321hp / 273 lb-ft) which is pretty cool as even with all these improvements it's much cheaper than a 997 still. As you would expect from the curves, it feels faster everywhere and the sound on the loud pedal is great, the induction noise is even louder with the roof up.
Views on the way home via Cranborne Chase AONB yesterday, cracker of a drive (apart from reversing 200m into a s
tty field to let a much spreading tractor and trailer past).
Excellent work with the Boxster . These 987 cars are very underrated in my opinion. My totally standard RS60 runs at 303 BHP and 251.ft ld of torque and feels pretty good on the Track. Yours must feel that little bit better which is great. I know mine has the Caymen TB as standard but could it be improved?

Not wanting to p*ss on your parade, but the DMS dyno is notoriously optimistic
I don't mind about peak numbers, I mostly wanted more mid range and it's done that and it sounds epic now.
Even if it's over or under, it's a before and after mods and map, so the gains are impressive wether they are low or high. +10% in an NA is not to be sniffed at.

Yes put the Bosch official GT3 throttle body and ipd plenum on for more fuel/air in and 200 cell cats or straight throughs if you can get away with it for more air out. Have to increase flow both sides to get these gains.
Back on track

Thats some prolific middle age spread eh!
Not quite a year back, I moved from a 997 to 991.2. I really like the new (to me) platform, but it almost feels like an SUV by comparison.
Cracking picture in Scotland!
Yes, regs and power and safety have bloated modern 911s sadly.
Some nice old and new at Kemble Airfield P Club Sat:
The Dakar really does feel like an SUV but great to see
Picked up a 2nd hand set of 9” / 12” Oz wheels for the turbo, happy days I thought no need to buy tyres as they came shod with Nankang semi slicks……, bl**dy hell are they noisy and stiff, it feels like the suspension has been welded up!

If you want to keep / improve on the dry grip and have reasonable wet grip, actually quite good wet grip and have road noise that is not much worse than a continental SC7 (I moved from SC7) the Yokohama A052 is superb, I'm loving them, they need about 200 miles to settle but are superb

Thanks, that’s one of the tyres on my short list, but I wasn’t sure about how they were in the wet, there aren’t too many manufactures making the 315 section tyres that I need on the rear with the 12” rims

Interestingly, quite a few of the track day 992 GT3 RS guys are now running Nang Kang AR-1's. Yes, the sidewalls are, apparently, much stiffer, but they are faster. One guy tested back-to-back with Cup 2's and saw 2 seconds benefit at Spa.

AR1s are very good (I have done a few races on them) but they are really only for dry weather. The AO52 is at least as good if not better in the dry AND it works in the wet too. They're expensive but they're worth it in my opinion (although I don't think I'd bother with them for a road car)

The trouble is the only sensible road tyre I can find in 315/30/18 is a PS2, which seems a very old design

Pretty sure P Zero are avaiable in that size.
They remain my tyre of choice.

Hi Gareth. If you've got a contact in the States, these get excellent reviews, and they were released 3-4 years ago, rather 24 + years ago ...
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=...
These are 335, which Tirerack state will fit on an 11.5" to 12.5" wide rim. So you're bang in the middle.
Fronts would be 245/40/18 :
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=...
Which assuming you're still running 4WD, would provide a rolling circumference almost identical to 335/30/18, so no ABS issues.
I checked to see if the original Extreme Contact was E marked, and they were. I've not checked if the EC 02 is, but I'd suggest you do.
If you've got a contact that can get them out of Tirerack and delivered to an address in the US, I can probably get a contact to ship them to the UK for you.
Edit to add : A look at images of them on The bay of E USA indicates they are indeed E marked, contrary to what Google Ai says ...

The Magpie isnt even the best chippy on that street
Lovely spec that though, the big, retro, simple 5 spoke wheels are so much more appealing than some of the more complex designs.

I actually think they look a bit cheap and not in keeping with the car. Yes, they look modern but is that a good thing?
I just don’t think they look Porsche.

Ha, the wheels were one of the major factors for me. My friend has an 86 911 and there are so many nice design cues in the modern version that I really like.

I can't think of anything much more Porsche looking than a Fuchs wheel.

I meant the modern wheel on the modern car. The Classic Fuchs wheel is excellent.

One of the most un-woke choices in life would be a brand new purple 992.
The best thing about purple of course is Deep Purple.
One of the best bands ever.
I would definitely order a Deep Purple 992 for that reason alone. Very cool.
Le Mans series in Portimao today 😎
General admission €6.8 ! If you wanted to walk the pits and also be on the grid for a walk , with best grandstand , €30.
First time seeing these cars, couldn’t believe how loud they were ,
But to stay within the rules, here’s a pic of a gt car

It also means I get to use the aubergine emoji indiscriminately and that makes me snigger ?
