Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, Tried to remove my front coffin arm today and it doesn't seem to be budging at the wheel carrier end, does it get rusted in / two metals reacting? Seen a youtube video where someone had a similar issue. Tried spraying some plus gas into it. Just wondered if anyone had any hints/tips/ things to try? I got a ball joint separator but can't get the top of it above the nuts screw thread part for some reason. Haven't tried a pickle fork yet though. Any advice cheers mark

POST 2Original post

Is the joint splitter this type? I don't think it is corrosion, but they are hard to split at the best of times. Once the splitter is good and tight, try a deft blow with a hammer on the side of the coffin arm near the joint. The shock normally frees the joint.

POST 3Original post

As Richard said. I did both in my 1999 c4 on the front last weekend. Ball joint splitter took seconds.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks richard, yes, looks the same as that image. I gave it a big bash with a lump hammer on the side and I think that released it. cheers, i owe you a beer :0) All nuts/bolts not moved since 1999 by the looks of it. One side done, onto other side now. Hopefully that will be quicker now i've learnt lessons from first side. Also decided to replace sway bar and strut braces whilst car is up on axle stands and everything is off/loose

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last bolt in, ready for torque-ing now. feels like that moment when a ship is ready to launch :0)

Good luck with the other side, it’s always quicker once you’ve figured out all the hidden tricks on the first one. Great call on doing the sway bar and strut braces while everything’s off; perfect time to get it all sorted in one go.
