I recently bought a 2014
Porsche
9011
Carrera
with 40K miles. I haven't driven it much however everytime I turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or right or when making a u turn I hear the loud noise (chugging sound) ike the wheel is hitting something. I brought it to the dealer and complained about it but was told that it is normal for a 2014
911
to make that sound as the wheel is tilting. Is this true? Has somebody experience this too? Appreciate any comment which might enlighten me.Thanks!
Its normal for any proper sports car with summer tire compound on them when it gets cold. What you are hearing/feeling is the tire compound getting hard from the cold and skipping sideways across the pavement at full lock, causing a clunking that you can feel in the steering column.
It's officially called the Ackerman effect due to a cars steering geometry, because the inside and outside
tires
are turning at a different radius from each other, which is magnified at full lock where the
tires
are almost sideways so one wheel tries to drag the other at the same radius path its taking.
You dont notice this on regular cars because they have all season
tires
. Summer performance
tires
start to get hard like a hockey puck (and dangerous in wet weather) once the temps drop below 40F/5C, and this is why those with sports cars either put their cars away for winter, or have a second set of winter
tires
/wheels. This will happen even in warm weather once Summer
tires
start to wear down and lose tread, and some tire brands do it more than others do
This is one of those questions that comes up ad nauseum every year as the weather cools from those that are used to cars with all season
tires
on them, so yes, lots of people have experienced this 😉
This happens with my c class especially with
blizzaks
during the winter. Those cars also have a wide radius so it’s even more pronounced
Just search P9 for Ackermann. You will get lots of information.
It's not limited to summer
tires
. On the right pavement at the right temperature my
Conti
DWS-06 Plus all-seasons do it too.
Same here… DWS’s and
Blizzaks
I have
Pirelli
Zeros, which I believe are all season
tires
, on a 2014
981 Cayman
. I have the same issue every winter, and it goes away in the summer.
Normal. Due to alignment settings.
Its the tire compound that causes it , a
Pirelli
tire ,change to a Michellin sport tire and it will go away mine did it was a sound i did not like and the dealer gave me the same song and dance .
I have a 2016
Boxster
and had same issue with the
Goodyear
Eagle
tires
that came with the car. Yes, the dealer gave me some one page document that said it was due to the "engineering" of the car. When I replaced the front
tires
at 37K, I went to Michele Pilot Sport 4S and the "tire skipping" pretty much went away. P.S. I live in Northern California and do not change my
tires
due to the seasons.
