My OEM Bilstein B4s had no bump stops left (they’d completely perished), and two of the shocks were leaking, so the suspension needed to be replaced regardless.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi PFA I'm Steve and am a first time poster here! There's a wealth of knowledge on this forum and I'm glad I found this because up until now I was relying on Facebook groups and rennlist forums, and whilst the latter isn't bad, its great to to find a forum that is local i.e Australian. I'm based in Sydney and earlier this year I picked up an Arctic Silver 996 Carrera 4S. It's my first foray into the brand, and I have to admit I'm loving it so far. The car was neat and tidy, and although I am the fifth owner of the car, it seems like its been taken care of and enjoyed during its time. Picked it up with aorund 85K kms on the clock. IMS had been done about 10K kms earlier from when I picked it up and it has the LN Engineering IMS Solution installed, which from what I'm told is a "one and done" type deal, i.e never needing to worry about it again. Whenever I buy a new car, I like to focus on preventative things first before delving into mods. Upon taking delivery of my car earlier in March, I have done the following to date: Completed so far (in order): - Full major service with all new fluids, spark plugs, belts, coilpacks. - A/C condensers replaced due to the old ones leaking. - Paint corrected, detailed, graphene coated the whole car and wheels + barrels, and ceramic tint to windows applied. - Numeric short shifter (old OEM shifter was SO sloppy!) - Function First solid shifter cable ends - Porsche PCCM+ (mainly for apple carplay and bluetooth capabilities) - Gundo hack to the OEM exhaust - 997.1 Carrera OEM 3.6 airbox installed. (mainly for aesthetics) - Engine mounts replaced with brand new OEM - Brake pads and rotors replaced with Brembo OEM spec - Goodridge braided brake lines - Steering rack reconditioned - All wheel bearings replaced with brand new OEM - Complete suspension overhaul (Bilstein B6, OEM springs, OEM drop links, lower control/coffin arms, bushings, tie rod ends) Things left to do (in no particular order): - Replace clutch, flywheel, RMS and AOS (previous owner said he had replaced the clutch and flywheel, but no receipt, the place he got it installed had shut down, and no idea what brand it is. It doesn't feel too good and feels heavier than OEM, it also squeaks when I press the pedal so I want to address that, and I also want to change clutch forks, master and slave cylinders as well and do a proper overhaul on this too) - Overhaul cooling system with new coolant hoses (just the main ones that are known to deteriorate, water pump, low temp thermostat, new CSF aluminium radiators and coolant overflow bottle (as I understand that this can be a weak point of the car, along with the water pump) - Full Cargraphic exhaust with headers, X-pipe and 200 cell cats. (car came with some cheap aftermarket headers, not sure what brand nor did the previous owner(s) know.) - Remove dash and get rid of the dreaded black foam from airvents issue - Speakers upgrade (car came with the BOSE option, but want to do away with the CD changer in the frunk and replace it with an amp and some decent speakers front and back) - BBS LM wheels - Work Meister S13P wheels - Refurbish brake calipers with new paint and new seals all round - To get out and drive the 996 even more than 2025. <---- 100% this! Now you might be confused and think, “ Steve, the title of this post suggests you’re looking for coilovers, but didn’t you just do a suspension overhaul? ” Well, yes — I did. After it was all done, the car drove great, don’t get me wrong, but it just felt… stock. My OEM Bilstein B4s had no bump stops left (they’d completely perished), and two of the shocks were leaking, so the suspension needed to be replaced regardless. I originally wanted to go with Ohlins R&T, but after reading about people’s experiences overseas (mainly in the UK and US), I backed away. Some said they were too harsh and not well-suited to bumpy or rough roads. In hindsight, I think many of those people are probably older than me (I’m in my early 40s) and more purist-minded. I should’ve listened to my gut and just gone for them, because I do regret choosing the B6s a little — even though they do feel nice and very much like how the car would’ve felt fresh from the factory. TL/DR: • Introducing myself, and • Does anyone here have Ohlins R&T installed on their 996 (preferably a C4S or Turbo)? If so, I’d love to chat and possibly meet in person to see how your car sits and possibly experience the Ohlins as a passenger, just to find out whether they’re really as uncomfortable as people say. • What other coilovers are people running? I'd love to hear anyone who is runnign KW V3's and also Bilstein B16 PSS10's! Thanks in advance!
