I try and teach you the R spec but you still not got it have you :-)
Don't know if anybody else has noticed this but on the Porsche AUC website there are only 4 Cayman Rs available - all 'wrong' spec and selling for up to £48k!
Is this the impact of the new 4cyl Cayman and Boxsters? If so, great!
Went out in mine today for a quick blast - what a wonderful machine. It will need some new boots soon, I'm thinking MPSC 2 would be just what the doctor ordered.
Can't speak for the R, but I've been watching GTSs and they seem to be selling well at OPCs with high prices.
It'll be interesting to see how the market pans out...

Could well be.
How are Spyders holding up?
There are only 2 but the new Spyder is very similar to the old one, whereas, there's nothing quite like the R. GT4 is essentially very different as its a Motorsport product - GTS is similar but not quite the same.
I'd love to chat about the R but haven't managed to find the right one to buy yet. So if anyone is selling let me know...has to be PDK though...my excuse being that it will be used mostly as a daily driver.
Nice low miles red one with PDK for sale ATM.
Don't think you will find buying a PDK will be an issue with the main items of buckets and spyder wheels.

If you mean the one in Lincoln, it does indeed look good and the right spec for me. However, I think it's a little over-priced and am wondering why it's already on its fifth owner?

If you can live with the red interior, the black one at Targa Florio is good value - full spec (PCM, PSE, PCCB, xenons, carbon buckets, Sports chrono, climate, spyder wheels, 21K miles) for 42K. Just that interior...!

Well if one applies David's logic regarding the large number of former owners on GT3 logbooks, it can only mean one thing : The Cayman R is a cr*p car, I mean what other reason could an owner have for selling a car .... ? ?
Shades of David to convince us there must have been something inherently "wrong" with the 991 GT3 as so many of them "threw themselves into the scenery" in the early days, strange that the GT4 uses the same front end components and yet David seems to have conveniently gone very quiet since that fact was announced prior to the launch of the GT4 .....

I would not touch a 5 owner car myself, I do love the R though and tried to buy another last Friday, but due to being busy at work missed out on a mega one owner car :-)
I cannot ever see me saying a 991 GT3 throws you off, this was what I said about the 996 GT3 at 120mph on UK B roads it gets a bit out of hand ;-)
the 991 GT3 and GT4 give quite a plush ride and they take 120mph B roads one handed with ease, firm but very plush.
I see you sold your GT3 :-p are you buying an R lol

Agreed but why are the seats in such shocking condition? Mine is that age, and the leather is a little shiny on the driver's side but is otherwise as new - that Targa Florio car's leather looks like it's aged about an extra 10 years?

I thought the same but even if they were in good condition I'd still not be able get that colour past SWMBO!

EX PEC vehicle? (I think, there can't be too many with Red). If you youtube Cayman R it shows it being driven by one of the instructors.
Mine will be for sale soon, black with black, manual, buckets, spyder wheels, sports chrono and pse and extended warranty until May.
Best car I've owned, but sadly times change and it needs to go
Buy a Cayman GTS, the CR was a great car but that's progress for you.
Shiny new'ish GTS for £55-60k or 5yr old 5 owner CR for nearly £50k. Hmmmm
And before I get jumped on yes I had a manual CR in 2012 for 6000 miles, loved it but not as much as the Spyder PDK that precluded it.

That's what I call fudging the figures!
A GTS is closer to £60K than £55K where as an honest well used CR is closer to £40K (I'm not interested in low mileage OPC cars). Which all adds up to adding nearly £20K to the budget in the real world!
Much as I like the look of the GTS (needs to be more aggressive from the rear), I didn't like how it drove. Too clinical and steering was a little light.
The R (to me) feels like a sports car, light, nimble and you know what the car is doing, bit like my old MK1 GT3 but grown up. One thing modern Porsche's can't seem to find at the moment. (unless you go GT3/4 of course)
£40-45k for a nice spec sub 25,000 mile R is a bargain! IMO

The CR
is
a great car. I tried the new GTS on track and I did like it but it's not worth a premium over the R IMHO. The steering is nowhere near as good and the exhaust noise is fun for about 10 mins and then overly contrived and annoying. Handling is good on both but all aspects of the R are honest - passive sports suspension, hydraulic PAS, proper handbrake = better driver's car

Just noticed that this one varies in price according to where it's advertised...it's currently £39.9K on Autotrader. Still can't past the red leather though!
Would also say that its important to have an inspection done before you buy.
My 987 Boxster Spyder just had its minor service done at the OPC and they found out that the steering rack needed replacing due to a leak (only covered 13k miles as it spends too much time tucked away)
As I did not bother with extending the warranty the OPC repair would be £2800. Luckily Porsche GB saw that my servicing was all OPC since day 1 and they picked up most of the steering rack part cost.
Still ended up with a bill for £1700 however including the service
As you get a warranty from an OPC car its worth sourcing one from them if you can.

Don't have much to add other than to say I'm absolutely loving my R which I picked up last month. Paid too much but with negligible depreciation expected, not too bothered. Buckets, spyders, PCM, manual box, alcantara wheel & inserts etc are all good but the PSE is my favourite option.....love the howl above 4k revs. The car feels like a Mk1 GT3 I had previously (except the R is driveable on UK roads !) Set out to buy an R8 V10 but no regrets with my purchase to-date.......

Its a smart time to buy an R. You may recall me saying last summer they were overpriced just before the big dip towards the end of the year so I have some form in this area
Ignore the wrong spec ones nobody wants them. If you can get your hands on one with the Bcukets/Chrono/PSE for 40-45k depending on mileage you have a safe bet there. Rs do have a more than a bit of desirability and the numbers of correctly specced ones are tiny.
Me? I sold mine and bought my old S back the bubblesNW unicorn car. Probably a lot worse long term financial decision but boy is it a lot better to drive!

Mine hasn't got xenons or sports chrono (I might get that at the next service) and only 12,000mls. Only I've owned it since new. I'm loving it though. I'm going to get MPSC2s for it this year, which should add something.
Has anybody changed their tyres on their R yet? Mine don't need it from a tread depth perspective but at 4 years old I think they are well past their best. What tyres did you go for if you have changed and what's your view on how it impacted the car?

you know the answer to this already :-)
PSS or if you want to make it more summer track bias CUP 2's but I would stay with PSS unless fitting adjustable LCA.

I want MPSC2s on mine as I've heard such good things about them. Also keen to understand what others have done though and their views. The Potenzas are hard wearing but pretty naff in my view.

Went on a passenger ride in a Cayman s with cup2 around the ring last year. Thing was bolted to the floor.
Even taking people on the outside on off camber corners the thing was stuck. Highly recommended. B2G lap time was 8.20 with lots of traffic.

That is its twin with another 9k on the clock...... Great car and am looking forward to the weather getting better
I didn't really expect the 718 to have much impact on Cayman R values, but if they're rising I'm happy with that, regardless of the reason.
Mine's five years old this month - had it from new and it has under 7,000 miles on the clock.
Of course I have no intention of selling, so the rising value is somewhat moot - may treat it to a set of Cup 2s before track day season starts :-)
7000 miles is nothing at all if in someone's desired spec looking around price is circa 46/48k at the moment.
As you say not selling so irrelevant.
Enjoy get a few more miles on and smile.

With prices as they are, 7,000 miles correct spec (Man, Buckets, Chrono, Spyders and PSE) could break £50k easy. Don't forget the 29,000 mile one at £49k!!

Yep it's manual with buckets, PSE and spyder alloys. Has sports button but no wart - hated the wart on my 997 so went for retro fit to avoid it.
But I didn't spec AC on mine - never used it in my 911, so saw no reason to add the weight or cost. Will probably put many buyers off, but I'm not selling, so I don't care :-)

the issue with £50k is cars like this and the spec this car has for the same money.
http://www.jzmporsche.com/porsche-for-sale/cayman/...
a 981 with buckets, PCCB, manual for £47k
or a 5 year old Cayman R, I have been looking for one but think £40/43k with 2 years OPC warranty is the right money but sub 10k miles and full spec.
Like the lei OPC car with every thing, 1 owner 7k miles, 2 years warranty they offered me at £43 last week, but I uummmmm to long and a day later it was sold.
Hard to part with £50k for a 30k miles 5 year old one, for me anyway even though the R is one of, if not the best cars I have owned.

If that car had the sports chassis/X73 then that must be the most R like 981 you could get.

+1 OPCs are trying it on at the moment by uplifting the price of any of the Rs they have in stock. My guess is that they're doing this on the back of the 'overs' some are paying for a GT4. I too have £40/£43K for the right car and don't even want a low miler. And agree that a private sale has to be a little lower than a main dealer.
I've already been thinking that I might just settle for a nicely specced 987S (PDK, sports seats and paddles) and save a load of cash to spend on petrol.
Just wondering what the view is on Rs that are retrospectively upgraded with the 'right' spec? Is it essential for residuals to maintain the OEM purchased spec, or could you, say, fit buckets or spyder wheels at the point of sale and, as a consequence, cover your investment with a higher selling price? Seems to me it's almost cost neutral to do so.
I've seen Spyder wheels at £2.5k and buckets at £4k, second had but it's not often they come up for sale.
I guess to try and buy the car right from the start?
Sub 20,000 miles car with - buckets, spyders, manual, PSE, Climate and chrono, in the right colour(s) -
OPC - £47-50k
Private with warranty - £43-£47k
IMO.
More toys like, Xenons, sound pack, nav, extended leather etc... Make the car more desirable not necessarily worth much more.
Iam sure everyone wants different things from an R but for me mines spot on
Man box buckets black Spyder wheels Chrono PSE A/C Alacantara bits couple other odds and ends perfect for my needs weekend and touring car milage circa 12 k now.
Seems to be a good spec for me.

Leicester last week was 7k miles and RRP of 45,850 I was offred it for £43,850 and it had ALL the nice bits + xenons and leather and was a dry use car, ie like new.
this new OPC price rises is all due to the R name and the 911R imo.
As I said the car listed now seems a better buy from JZM if you want, buckets and PCCBs and manual. you can fit x73 for very little outlay.

Man box buckets black Spyder wheels Chrono PSE A/C Alacantara bits couple other odds and ends perfect for my needs weekend and touring car milage circa 12 k now.
Seems to be a good spec for me.
We are all different.. Mine
White, Manual, Buckets, PSE, Spyder alloys, Sports Chrono, Xenons, no rear wiper, iPod interface, red seat belts (might be standard?), Climate control and 13,500 miles. And OPC warranty.
Just fitted Leather panels next to the radio, getting steering wheel and gear knob done in alacantara and have GT3 master cylinder and Pagid Blues to get fitted by 9E.
She is only a weekend toy but I wouldn't change her for a 981 apart from a GT4. As said many times, no feel in the steering, not an event to drive and in no way as light and nimble (and fun) to drive.

a 981 with buckets, PCCB, manual for £47k
or a 5 year old Cayman R, I have been looking for one but think £40/43k with 2 years OPC warranty is the right money but sub 10k miles and full spec.
But it still aint a Cayman R by name or driveability

Would that be the same person who suggested a standard 981 Cayman as an alternative, even though he ripped into them as having lifeless steering and terribly long gearing when he had an R?

I couldn't possibly say... ;-)
Thing about an r with sports seats and pdk and ac doesn't that add back 65kg and in turn make the suspension not specifically tuned for the original intended curb weight. I know a lot of people talk about losing weight etc but those sub 70 kg guys you can feel the difference even 10-15 kg makes on things like turn in.
I think these things are best left raw for the experience as manufacturer intended.

This is what I would do and indeed have done. Had I not been extremely fortunate to buy the unicorn S back recently I was planning on getting a PDK S and pulling as uch out of it as possible and making something up with Corbeau buckets, Quaife diff etc.
Knowing what I know now having owned an R I think you could create something far superior it just wouldnt have the badge on the back or the exclusivity. I would value my S way above the equivalent R and I'm sure bubblesNW (previous owner) would agree. Its a sensational car.
You'd rather the S and spend money on it than an R.
Wow, each to there own.
I'll stick to the R thanks. The out the factory ready nimble little car that is a rare sight and will keep its money.

The R is not a holy grail of handling or anything else. It's a marketing special and it's time the bulls
t stopped! It's a very desirable car but only IMO due to its rarity and chances of getting a better spec car. Mine was sold to get a better spec S. My new one is vastly better than the R it replaced. Ask bubblesNW
I've no corner to defend or axe to grind here. I had one. It was good. Replaced it with a better spec car. Maybe the S will be replaced with a 981? I'll have to have a go in one but if it's better it's better and I'll drive it rather than defend my incorrect choice on a forum

My statement was 'some people' would rather spend money spec'ing an S rather than buy an R. Not me, in the real word it is still an S with nice spec and not an R (which as people have said is rarer and will hold its money better)
Sometimes nice options on cars make the car more desirable, not always worth anymore.

I understand what you're saying and have actually been round Oulton Park in your car when Darren owned it but for me, the R is still the one I want. I may go for an S if I can't find an R only because it will save a fair wedge. I got close to buying an S a few days ago. It was a rare and cracking spec for an S as you will see from the original ad:
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...
..and all for £31.5k! It sold so fast (advert up Thursday night and sold by Friday morning) that I suspect we may see advertised again soon by a trader for significantly more.
Modified to be near or better than OE spec or top spec top model OE is just a preference.
Take the value arguments out of the equation and just drive the cars for what they are then it's just a matter of personal taste. In some cases paying more for an R will work out but in others chucking money at a more 'modest' car can also work. I go for the latter approach myself as resale value, depreciation, cache of a 'rare' car are not important factors for me.
Nice car that Steve. I've not looked but is it hard to find those seats in an S? I wouldn't worry about the LSD part as aftermarket would do a better job than the little OEM item. I wonder how many R's still have a working LSD which seems to be the key ingredient for the change in behavior over the S.

Yes I was offered that car and would have jumped on it but... no Chrono. On a pdk? It's an ex experience car as well. If I'd had it I would have disclosed that but it would appear some traders don't. Luckily the very day after the chap rang me I got the call to buy the unicorn back.
If you think you are going to buy a half decent spec S, stick a Quaife in it and some decent colliers and make a car thats better than an R you are exactly right.
I'm not defending my personal car it's more the annoyance it caused me having being duped by the hype for the R that made me sell my S. I'm just thankful I got it back. It's utterly sensational to drive and as I say there for any R owner that probably hasn't driven one to try.
The R is a capable desirable car with way better long term depreciation prospects but it is just an S with a frock.

You must have had a particularly bad R
I can't really believe what I'm reading..... Put in a diff and some other parts on an S and have a better car than an R. Utter rubbish! Also with a Porsche like these adding non factory after market performance parts significantly detracts from the value whereas the R is currently appreciating so not a great idea from an investment point of view either. I'm surprised that you've tricked your up to look like an R if you feel the way you do. Saying it's "just an S in a frock" shows your ignorance of the product and it's abilities.
Give over. I had a perfect R in unicorn spec with full OPC history.
The R is an S with some Bilstein fixed dampers on it and a slight chance someone might have specced buckets. Thats all it is.
If you believe in the cult of the R thats up to you. I've been there seen it done it dont buy it. My car is vastly superior to an R and creating something better than a factory spec R is simple.
What does an R have over the diff and suspension that makes it so good? Pixie dust? These are the only things changed from an S? Introduce more complex adjustable dampers from a premium supplier and you dont get something better? What about incorporating some proper top mounts to get over that pesky camber limitation? All simple stuff that will result in a better car overall. An S with some choice mods would be better and you cant really modify an R as it will destroy the residuals.
Fri
Why be selective in your use of the differences? You list suspension and diff as the 'only' differences, but you know that's guff. Doors, manifold, lowered springs, reduced unsprung weight with Spyder wheels and not forgetting the red door pulls! Sum of the parts is what splits the two, in the Rs favour. If mods are your thing then mod the R then put the original stuff back on at point of sale. Doesn't affect residues then.

Bigger exhaust manifold and better system
Spyder lightweight wheels
Carbon buckets
Aero kit
Aluminium doors
Tuned suspension
330 Horsepower
LSD (Mine still works fine)
Better ARB’s
Cayman R Badges
Prestige
Bigger exhaust manifold and better system - Makes no noticeable difference other than slightly better sound IF you have PSE
Spyder lightweight wheels - Agree best wheel design of all time and very desireable
Carbon buckets - If you are lucky
Aero kit - hmmmm
Aluminium doors - makes no tangible differnce to the car
Tuned suspension - not a positive on the R
330 Horsepower - makes no tangible difference to the car
LSD (Mine still works fine) - relatively easy to retrofit but agree this is essential for a proper high power RWD car
Better ARB’s - dont buy it and would give £1000 to anyone that could blind detect which ARBs are fitted to a car
Cayman R Badges - Well thats the main feature
Prestige
- Agree totally

Out of interest anyone actually have first hand experience of both the R, Basic S, specced up S or just me thats not blinkered?
Yes - I test drove a basic S for 24hrs. I also had a very good blatt in a tuned s and I currently own an R.
I think the R is far superior to a basic S. The suspension is extremely well-judged and makes the car feel sharp and precise, and yet still isn't too stiff for the road. The car drives extremely well and feels exceptionally well-balanced.
Now to the tougher question of a tuned S. I would say that the car I drove did feel slightly sharper, the cup cables made the gear shift rifle bolt precise, which I really liked but the tuned exhaust ruined the whole experience. It was fine when you were going for it especially as the lightweight flywheel made the engine very "zingy" but during normal driving it was boomy and just generally annoying. Made the whole car very chavvy, not my cup of tea at all.
So yes I do think that it is possible to tune an S and end up with a superior car to a std R, but the best bits of the R make it a much more special car. The buckets, lightweight doors, diff, lowered and different passive sports suspension and Alcantara all do just enough to make the car feel a little bit special and (for me at least) make a tangible improvement over how the car drives when compared to a std S. With a tuned S you have to be very careful not to ruin the car.

Hmmmmmmmm, so there are some differences then other the the "only" two you state. Did you put the aero kit on your modded S, hmmmmmmmmmm!,
By Aero kit we do just mean a fixed spoiler and two insignificant chin splitters? What difference do you actually think that makes? Easily substitutable for an even more effective aftermarket part. The only differences that you cant spec from new on the R are the exhaust and the ali doors. The doors wouldnt stand up to a blind test and the exhaust is microscopically different to the original.
I'm not saying the R is anything but a desirable car. A low mileage R is a good buy at the present time IMO and if you followed the never ending thread last year you'l see I called the bubble in prices last summer before anyone else spotted it. a 5k drop in prices followed. The prices are now going up again but only if you have a unicorn spec car. A basic spec R with no buckets is almost un sellable and barely worth any more than a well specced S. Nobody wants them magical suspension ARBs or otherwise.
I'm not so sure about that. Not everybody wants to mod their car. And the suspension on the R makes the car look a lot better (no ridiculous suspension gap). Also some people want chairs but to be honest the car should have at least spyder alloys and buckets, mine has PSE too, which is a welcome addition.

If you buy a Cayman R you are buying exclusivity and spec (if you are lucky to find a good spec) If you want a more dedicated track car you can make a better one very easily out of an S. If you want a more dedicated road car you can get a PASM equipped S thats better. The R occupies an odd sector in that its purporting to be a track car but its probably too soft for that and it certainly way too harsh for a road car.
A very well specced S or Black series would still pull up to 35k. I know poorly specced Rs have traded well under that number during the back end of last year. S in short the 987 is as well know very spec sensitive and having the R badge will only help you if you have the spec to back it up.

I'm the only one offering completely unbiased opinion on here. No axe to grind. Own a tack car with all the bells and whistles on it thats got adjustable everything and blah blah and I have more then enough experience to set it up too. Drives round Caymans of any description.
As I say come and see me at my place in Yorkshire. Drive my S and swear on the life of your firstborn that its not better than your R and I'll give you £1000 its really that simple. You guys have 10-15k more invested in one letter on the back of the car so I wouldnt expect anything other that a fight
Loving this squabbling!
But more importantly...who is going to sell me their R for a little less than the current OPC priced cars? I'm not after a unicorn, it merely needs PDK, buckets and to not be pea green.
This might be the less chance to sell for a good price as the bubble is likely to burst as soon as I've bought one. It usually does!
Well the glut of cars on the market from the GT4 deliveries have gone so you might struggle. This is why right now they are a good buy but just wait for one with good spec!

Completely unbiased? As an owner of a tuned S espousing the virtues of a tuned S over an R? Yeah right completely unbiased.
If you have missed earlier in the thread I have owned and run an R and reached my own conclusions.....
Also my S is not tuned it's completely standard just very well specced. My point is that you could make something better for dedicated road or dedicated track use from a more basic S.

Isn't the point that if you think an R is the ultimate car then in some sense poor you, but just buy an R, be done with it don't mod it just drive it. If actually what you want is an R+ then start with an S.

Crikey another sensible chap enters the room
"I bought a car tarted up to look like an R. But it's better than an R, coz the R is crap, innit." Most insecure series of posts that I have seen for a while. You like your replica R. Good for you. Others like the R itself.
As for all the blah about LSDs on these cars, the OEM unit is barely functional and wears out almost immediately if used. It is telling that nobody notices the difference when it does wear out. It is because Porsches at this kind of power level see no practical benefit from an LSD, at least not on the road; and you would have to be a pretty fast track driver to see a benefit on the track.

the thing is you got a LOT of free stuff on the R so the R is a better starting point if the prices are Normal ie circa £40k like they have been, esp if people are asking £40k for an S ! open up the gap to R's at £50k and yes start with an S if you can get a nice one for £32k ish.
Buckets and Spyder wheels to start are free on the R that's £13k retail to buy just as an example if you want oem look and feel. (you wont find 2nd hand ones)
Now if an S has these then it's a good start, but very few have both although a lot have black pack and spyder wheels as Porsche made it an option on later cars.
The R sus makes the car what it is though, and yes while you can buy some £4k set up for the S the R's work like a dream on the Road for fun over the crap PASM (because yes it is crap) too soft off too hard on.
you would have to be dead to not know driving a R over driving an S with PASM. SO I would love to do a test and claim £1k ;-)
but again you can ADD the R shocks and springs with the harder ARB for about £1.5k if you want what makes the R the R !!! that ride ! :-) it's very cheap to give the S the R ride.
about the only thing than you get on the R is alloy doors which save 15kg which is not worth changing on the S.
they are both great cars out the box The R has always been the better buy as they dropped to mid £35k so the S to R gap was small, even at £43k I would go R over an S at £35k, but that's when R>£43k start to look expensive and you may as well just spend £1.5k on a shock/spring ARB R set up on the S.
the best value car to buy atm is the Back ED coupe loads of nice bits, the R remap etc so a great starting point if you are ok owning a black car.
there is a viper green normal S which looks like an R it's the press car that was a nice buy when it came up for sale mid 30's inc aero pack.
And last owning the R does make you feel good inside, it's a rare car at the end of the day and will always be an R esp in the right colour of Peridot :-) THE R colour to have :-)

So I presume the R has Chrono as standard but needed to be specced as an option on an S. Not interested in the launch stuff but I guess the sport plus will be useful for the track sessions. Should be quite interesting trying to work out what to turn off and what to turn on before going on the track after previously only having to belt up and go.

So what do you think of your R so far Ian?

I'll have my R on track for the first time at Oulton on Friday, will be interesting with all this stuff compared to the 964 Cup!

Loving it! I've only done about 300 miles so far, it's very different to my 964 but that was really just a road-legal race car.

does not change the rev limiter on a manual but it does give you a 10% extra slip angle, faster PDK shifts and better throttle response feel.

Your cup was a little bruiser and fabulous on track. We've had some great fun in our 964s...hope we can continue that with the Caymen!
If I can get away on Friday, I'll pop over to Oulton to see how you're getting on.

Yes as mentioned the Chrono is an option on the R as well as are the seats and Nav. The Rs are just as spec sensitive as the S too. 20k mile R I passed on earlier this year changed hands for 32k Same car specced up would have been about 43k at the time and now probably a good buy at 45k so choose carefully!
A 32k R. And now a £45k car is good value lol
You cannot made it up.
OPC cannot sell the 4 cars listed at these new prices, let's see what happens.
As for an S at £40k that's a tough sell IMO which will drop £10k in the next 12 months if you are lucky.
Makes same year boxster's at £27k seem the best value ATM and now what iam looking at for a run about.
an S is not technically worth 40k but thats what I was offered for my particular car. Its very unusual but itw worth more than 40k to me personally. Realistic market value is about £36k This is not likely to fall much.
981s are still hovering over 40k for good spec cars and they seem to sell quickly. Will probably get one in this year to try.
Comments on R reflecting a bit of timing but more the importanc eof spec on the R if you want to start talking values and desirability they MUST have carbon buckets/Chrono and should have PSE. Any one of these options missing makes a colossal difference to the chances of a sale. Its almost like discussing two completely different cars.
Crono and pse are trinkets which can be added cheap at any time and does not affect a sale.
I try and teach you the R spec but you still not got it have you :-)
The only R which has sold from the OPC list did not have either ! And there was a que for it.
You need to learn the cars more IMO.
As for a £40k S that's dream land and set to drop like a stone more than £10k IMO.
If you have been offered £40k for an S and turned it down more fool you lol.
The £32k R was laughable no car has ever seen those values.
There was a R for £35k at one point sans AC.
For an R to sell well it only needs 3 things
Manual
Buckets
Spyder wheels
Not trinkets you talk of.
Although when there are a few cars for sale the trinket cars will sell 1st ofcourse.
Black does not help its cause either a poor re seller as are all black cars ATM.
Looking for a boxster myself only 5 OPC cars for sale all black, no one wants black cars it seems eps R's.

He's right. My car is black but once it's been down to KDS Keltec, I think people might change their mind on the black

My car is yes. What do you mean by stock? No spec? Or unmodified? My argument is for a well specced S. Evidently we are in silly mode here now. Like trying to debunk scientology with Tom cruise
As for the asking price on mine it ain't for sale. I've knocked back an offer of 40k for it last week. It's worth more than that to me.
By stock, I do mean non modded. And having driven a stock S, I know that I much prefer the R to the S. I don't like PASM very much and the R has a passive sports suspension

I think I read that the boxster would just be for a runabout so why not get a 2.9 boxster or cayman? Surely they would be plenty of fun and there is a reasonable choice at the moment. If I was going to only use mine on the road I would go for something like this:

It's PDK but auto is now my preference for a regular use car.
Luckily I've now found something that suits both my regular use and track needs.

If you have missed earlier in the thread I have owned and run an R and reached my own conclusions.....
Also my S is not tuned it's completely standard just very well specced. My point is that you could make something better for dedicated road or dedicated track use from a more basic S.

Will we see you on track any time soon?
I saw one of these on the road yesterday. A green coloured one with a private plate: POR 987R
As an owner of a 987 S, the R definitely has road presence. The colour pops, but it was going just as fast as everyone else, 10 mph in traffic on the A3.

Apologies for non R content but given there is only 1 hot R for sale right now this seems conspicuous value...
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202607194...
It may not be spec perfect but the base pure driving experience is right there ( the brightest of steering, balanced chassis) and mods could be done if you want to retro fit seats, shift and wheels..... its price has dropped a long way.......I thought it would be gone.
Poor spec by comparison to others that have come on the market.
People want the Spyder wheels on a Spyder.
They'd be better to sell the ones on there.... fit these

Yes having the buckets and spyder wheels is what makes it. All that extra lard will probably make it drive similar to a S.

I'm doubtful.
The difference in front wheel weight between the Spyder wheels and those fitted to the car linked to, is 800g per wheel, the rears 1.6kg each.
The weight difference between carbon folding buckets and Sports seats (spec dependent) is 16kg maximum, total.
Total of non-Spyder/R wheels and seats 21kg.
Meanwhile brimming the fuel tank will increase either car's weight by 40kg ...
Hi all.
For the life of me i dont know why dealers are asking outragous high prices for the current batch of Rs that have recently come onto the market, just trying it on talking prices up, clearly non of them are selling.
Some of the specs are clearly the less expensive ones also im some cases.
I umderstand what some percieve as the holy grail command more.
Clearly a lot of these are low 40s
Some of these higher priced have been on market for a few months maybe sale or returns who knows
One things for sure to high and not selling.
Only my opinion observation of course
Cheers have a good day.
996 and 997 GT3s are all £100k plus cars now, probably just Rs and Spyders just catching up with inflation.
Your £45k budget don’t buy you much these days.
I think we are seeing a feel good summer boom for performance cars. Its not just the Cayman R, cars across the board have increased in price. However, it does seem most prevelant in Porscheland, look at GT prices of late. The few dealers sellers them now are cornering the market and know one is selling as a result.
People haven't just realised these cars are 'the last of a breed'. It's a bubble. Dealers know it and are trying to cash in while they can. On a cold, wet, Monday in January, reality will hit, imo of course.
PRO5T said:

Yeah, and I don't think Rs and Spyders have really even kept up with inflation. According to the BoE inflation calculator, £45,000 in 2015 is about £65,000 today. How many Rs and Spyders are actually changing hands for fully £65,000 right now? Not many, if any at all.
That said, Rs and Spyders were gradually depreciating in real terms until quite recently, there's definitely been a substantial uptick. I don't think it's a bubble, at least not relative to the rest of the market, which maybe as a whole is rather frothy right now!
In the long run, you can imagine them doing quite well. They definitely have a bit of specialness about them. But the hardware is very little changed from the regular models and there's not much in terms of maintenance and running costs that's particular to the R or Spyder. Brakes, suspension arms, engine maintenance and reliability etc, clutch, it's all standard 987.2 stuff, which will make them easier and cheaper to run over the long haul. It's pretty much just the dampers that are specific in wear and tear terms and they are not exotic / expensive GT car style dampers. Exhaust, I suppose, too.
A GT car is a very different proposition in terms of maintenance and running costs. Stuff like brakes, suspension arms, clutch etc and indeed exhaust are a major, major step up, cost wise on a GT car.
Has anyone with £40-45k burning a hole in their pocket - for this type of car - considered a 718 Cayman T over an R? And please no jokes about people with hearing difficulties, not wanting to start a four pot hate war just curious as the T has a similar ethos and a lot newer.

You suggest "most prevelent in Porscheland".
Have a look at Ferrari, CS, Speciale, Scuderia & GTO, it's almost as if Porsche variants are rising in value at a much lower beta to Ferrari price moves.
All of this appears to be based on a relatively small visible volume of transactions?

Those are supercars produced in low numbers though and are generally very special. As lovely as they are I wouldn't put a cayman R or gt4 for that matter in the same category.

Probably not, more likely picking up 2.0T, as in turbo, as 718 T, as in T. I've had and loved a couple of 2.0 turbo Caymans, and was quite interested by the actual 2.0 T. (Got distracted by Cayman and 911 GT/RS models along the way, will get back to that thought eventually...)
I'm not sure it would be anything like a substitute for a 987 R. For whatever reasons, the Cayman R remains a point of interest beyond most recent Porsches.

Unrealistic private pricing is a real turn off in terms of judging the vendor, which is a big part of buying privately. If they are willing to stiff you on the price, what else are they willing to stiff you on?

I'm not sure why we're discussing spyders in this Cayman thread but while we are may I point out the big red herring here....
Operating the roof
My 981 has a fully automated roof I can operate from outside the car by just pressing the button on the key. This is brilliant.
And I can obviously operate the roof from inside the car and while it is traveling at lower speeds. I lower and raise the roof a lot while sitting in the car at traffic lights or while moving. And yes it gets more attention from envious onlookers but that's not the reason why ... obviously.
It's just so much more convenient. If I had to get out and fanny round I'd be less inclined to bother.
There i said it ...

As much as I like the Spyders, I have to agree about the roof. After 18 years of faffing about with a DIY roof, I swapped my Caterham for a more modern car with a power hardtop. Bliss!

Plastic interior probably best for our oft inclement weather ...
When it starts chucking it down, you've got out of the car, unfurled the roof and fitted it, I imagine the interior could be a bit on the soggy side.

The mouse has a single minded fascination for cow.
The car, car model, open topness or anything else is all irrelevant.
It's all about the cow.
You’re not wrong! If I’m paying £65k for a 987, I don’t want the interior ambience of a 15 year old Fiesta. The risk of a rain shower doesn’t change that!
In all seriousness, I do think if you’re pricing right at the very top of the market, it’s a notable omission and I think most buyers willing to buy one of the most expensive 987s in the UK will want it, too.
If I could have the looks and lightness of the Spyder with a power roof that would indeed be excellent.
But you can’t
And I personally prioritise looks and lightness over the power roof thing.
It’s also a bit of that ‘imperfection giving a thing more character’ thing….I don’t want a car that’s perfect in very way.

I think that's a maximum figure. In practice, it's less than that. Pretty sure you'd need to have a car with the aircon and PCM deletes, for instance, to hit the headline 80kg figure. 50kg is probably a more accurate rule of thumb.

There was an AC delete option (or no cost to have it fitted option) and you could have the Infotainment screen replaced with a cubby hole and maybe they fit no speakers too if it has no stereo at all.

If you want a Spyder but with an electric roof the 987.2 Black edition has the same features as the Spyder/R but are rarer, if you can find one with folding buckets then your even closer to the weight of a CR/Spyder with aircon.
Although the flat black colour imo is naff but some were Basalt black which is much nicer

Er, it really doesn’t. It’s got the wheels and the notional 10 PS, but that’s it. Doesn’t have the suspension, the alloy doors, the body changes, and indeed the roof etc!
Er did I say it was a Spyder? No! I just said it was an option if you wanted an electric roof boxster that was closer to a Spyder than the S and I am sure from memory it came with Ali doors and bonnet. If you opted for passive suspension then could easily be upgraded to a set up better than spyder plus the BE is even closer to a CR.
For the record I had my Spyder for over 3 years and never found the roof a problem in all weather
To add at the time of release the CR/Spyder were the best value factory fresh out of the box but the BE is not to be sniffed at especially as these cars are now 15+ years old and for a while the BE was considerably cheaper on the 2nd hand market although a lot rarer especially in manual form

Sorry, you clearly said it had “the same features”. But it doesn’t. It doesn’t have aluminium doors, the suspension, the body work. And literally every 987 and 997 had the aluminium bonnet. Well except the odd GT car with a carbon bonnet.
The Black Editions just got the 10PS and the wheels. That’s it.
Also BE came with Xenon’s as standard which is a must if night driving as the standard lights on 987.2 are awful so a win for some who doesn’t want roof faff

The Silver current R for sale says it has A/C in the write up but it hasnt the AC buttons not on dash.
At the right price cars sell anyone who knows CRs know current cars are overpriced.
Jumping on the band wagon comes to mind.

Looks like my old car, had red wheels originally, regrettable sale.
Person I sold to wanted the wheels changed from original red to silver, I just left the original colour but looks very good with silver.
Still think £60k private is pretty punchy

Oh its that one. The red wheels were way nicer! that was a rare factory option they have now removed. Each to their own but shame they did that.
I’ve owned my Cayman R (manual) for over 7 years, but the time has come to part with it. I’d be very interested to hear everyone’s views of it’s realistic value, as a lot of the chat seems to go against the current market values which I find interesting and a bit odd from owners but understandable from people looking to buy. They are universally recognised as a great driver’s car along with limited production numbers, so why shouldn’t they gain value as a rare and sought after analogue sports car ? Btw I won’t be asking £60k for it
Your views and opinions are much appreciated, cheers.

£55K.
£60K if you reinstate the factory red wheels.
Nice car and spec,
Anything posted on here is only personal opinions, cars will sell if priced right though and you only need one person wanting to buy it.
The blue one a few weeks seemingly sold quickly, low mileage, different colour and good spec. I did think it was a bit pricey but it went quickly (so what do I know
) not sure what price it sold for though.
My old one above is someone hoping rather than any market value………
Take this with a pinch of salt but I would say around £48 - £50k as a private sale.

Because all of that has basically been true for many years, over which the car did not gain value but actually lost value in real terms accounting for inflation.
Rs do seem to be ticking up a bit of late. But they’re still worth less than they were 10 years ago in real terms and they haven’t gained value recently at anything like the pace of some other makes and models in the last couple of years, for instance, stuff like manual Ferrari 355, 360 etc.

inevitable that. Within the world of the Cayman R - that is about as rare as it gets.
There are rarer ones, there’s a few one of one PTS cars

Three grand price drop......
What size service would this be due next month ?
I like that. Wish I’d of had a R instead of a GT4 now.
Gosh, I must be out of touch. I thought these cars were low to mid forties for a nice one. £57k? That's close to 718 GTS 4 litre territory.
Will be interesting to see if this sells.

Doubt the seller would do that. Probably a commission sale on behalf.
A unicorn with all that spec. Never seen one with both the extended leather AND extended alcantara pack AND extended interior painted bits.

Sport Chrono+ but no chrono clock. Is this a retro fit with just the switch and software purchase update?
Yep the perfect outcome. No silly clock on the dash. Most would prefer it that way I sense. I wish I could clock delete mine.

Knowing RPMs sale or return rates that is where the seller would be £££ given the RPM asking price.
RPM have to warranty it, which initially does not cost them anything unless there are issues to sort. A small risk for RPM to shoulder.
Who is paying for the RPM service ? ( and that breaks the all OPC record - some bothered, some not ).
SOR can get messy but unlikely from RPM given their good reputation.
The on sale commitments in the ad suggest it is SOR.

I also like the clock in my car. But I really like this option to have it as a display. Really bugs me that the 987 doesn't have the 5 pod 997 style dash with useful info like oil temp. I want to know when the oil is up to temp as I like to warm a car before driving it hard. This looks like a neat solution.

£58k is still big money based on mileage (only my view), saying that if one person really wants one with good spec they may pay that.
Agreed above, seller will likely see around £51 - £52k if on SOR with RPM at £58k.
Would have paid around £51k for it back
With all this chat about values i am surprised this rather unfortunately specified R isn’t being discussed!
Perhaps the bidding will reflect the market a little more accurately than some very high priced “unicorns”
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/auction/21035258
If it ticked all the right boxes imo it would be circa £50-55k, buckets alone would cost you £8k second hand, wheels about £5k.
But has it stands I would say £34k plus fees is about right.
It didn’t make its reserve, the fierce bidding at the end that finished at £34k seems the seller needs to lower their expectations, imo it’s a £35-38k car at best
I agree with most said above its 35k. plus i think it doesnt have A/C ?
Even if lucky enough to find a set of wheels for 5k makes it £40k without other stuff been mentioned.
Its a strangely speced R cant just relay on the low mileage for a decent price.

Hats off to you, I hadn't noticed that !!
So, some of the heaviest wheels, the heaviest seats and the heaviest transmission, but no air-con ...
Truly bizarre spec. I think the owner has probably seen the best bid on it now too...

On cue:
Official PCCM Plus retrofit for 987.2
"...
oil temperature and oil pressure can be viewed on the trip screen.
"
I guess all 987.2s including the Cayman R are now classics according to Porsche's 15 year classification? I'd been waiting for the 987.2 Apple Carplay PCCM Plus head unit. Never felt fitting to have a third party unit in the R.

That's excellent.
There's just the small matter of it being 8-10 X more expensive than the Sport Chrono clock upgrade ...
True but the Sport Chrono replacement also doesn’t do Apple Carplay...
Yeah different things obvs. I have to say I was quite anti the chrono-carbuncle before I had it but honestly I don’t even notice it anymore. If anything it differentiates the R’s interior from my base 987.1 so I prefer having it.
On the topic of interiors I am a fan of that gloss painted rear interior brace. My standard one is a bit scuffed so I’d jump on an original one if it came up at a breakers. Do like the white mesh part for the buckets as well. There’s always more spec to whatever spec you happen to acquire!

I notice that "Refund Club's" services are being pushed my numerous automotive YTer's of late.
For sh*ts and giggles I started the process of filling in their on-line application form. However before I agreed to their T & C's, I thought I'd actually read through them. Their commission charges are "interesting" ...
I aborted the process, then received several emails prompting me to finish my application form. I responded by unsubscribing.
An AI search on what their commission charges are wasn't overly forthcoming, but it did say this :
"Outcome Timeline: Most claims are expected to settle within 6 to 12 months. If the claim is successful, a success fee is charged; if not, there are no fees.
Their "success fees" were listed in their T&C's and were as much as 25% for larger compensation payments ...

Nice car. Not showing for sale on eporsch website. Just checked Autotrader and still no manual 987.2 Cayman S for sale - as rare as the R almost.
So saying "just get the S" isn't quite that simple, like it might have been for other model generations. There are a tiny handful of PDK 987.2 S models for sale but even they are £25k ish. The R is double not triple or quadruple the price. But I get his point, and he must have been referring to 987.1 prices.

Do they still have in the small print that you can make the claim for free by not using them?
The finance agreement I had when I bought my Cayman R is one of the ones subject to potential compensation. I logged my complaint directly with VW Financial Services and if there is a redress scheme, I'll get all the money rather than sharing it with a no win no fee firm and some youtubers.

No longer for sale apparently he has decided not to sell, guess the 34k wasnt what he was expecting maybe hoping for a higher price like some of the better speced ones up for sale.
To be honest they are not flying out still overpriced but only my opinion.
Fairly priced decent spec sells
