Suggestion

Since I had such limited space, I chose to have this one-car unit placed in this spot after filling in the area with rocks, fill and drove my buddy's vibra roller over the area to compact several times and then followed by a jumping jack to set the gravel area for the base.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2000 996 c4. Normal interior wear which I have been restoring. Mechanically it is "one of the best" the mechanic has seen in a long time. I think this is mainly due to the car having lowish miles and being garage kept all its life with regular maintenance by a mechanic who works exclusivity on Porsche and a few other euro cars. I just bought a house without a garage. I am worried for my car!! What are reasonable steps to do to keep it from rusting, deteriorating, and getting beaten up by mother nature. I want to keep this car the rest of my life. It was my fathers car.

POST 2Original post

I have a few cars that need to sit outside. Kills me. First thing is get a car cover. Get a nice one. If you have a shaded area you can park it, do that. I prefer a spot that has shade in the evening, not morning. Then be diligent on keeping it waxed. I wax mine every 3 months. Also, treat the leather regularly. Roll the windows down on hot days for at least a few hours. whenever you can. I also make sure I drive them every few months. If not, animals will make their way into it, and you WILL get spider webs under it. I even had a little frog sitting in between the leading edge of the door and front fender. The rotors will start to rust as well. Its not ideal but you can still protect it a little at least.

@Prelude Guy Great tips thanks! What are your thoughts on those portable car ports you can buy. They are made out of industrial plastics and sort of go half moon over the car.

POST 4Original post

Is it a daily driver? If not you could rent a storage unit if any are close by.

The 10'x20' that COSTCO sell is great. Anchor the legs/feet down though. Are you renting? If not build a carport...

POST 6Original post

A pop up car port is a good idea, I am not sure how much room you have but sheds are an option. My neighbor had one that had a garage door on his, definitely enough room for a car but they aren't cheap. I am not crazy about car covers, I've had one hold moisture in before and that prolonged wetness is going to be what gets you. Rain, snow, dirt or whatever just sitting on a car aren't going to hurt it.

POST 7Original post

Build a garage. I can't imagine life without one.

POST 8Original post

Also get a windshield screen to protect the dash. They are cheap. The Porsche one is nice but expensive. https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Porsche-Sunshade-Sunshield-2005-2011/dp/B00M8RKR6K/ref=sr_1_4?crid=HL91B4FHIFSM&keywords=porsche+windshield+shade&qid=1561925071&s=gateway&sprefix=porsche+windshield%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-4 https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Porsche-Sunshade-Sunshield-2005-2011/dp/B00M8RKR6K/ref=sr_1_4?crid=HL91B4FHIFSM&keywords=porsche+windshield+shade&qid=1561925071&s=gateway&sprefix=porsche+windshield%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-4 Also I'm thinking of buying this: https://www.amazon.com/Palram-Arcadia-Carport-Patio-Cover/dp/B00O9X0Y9Q/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=carport&qid=1561924962&s=gateway&sr=8-25 https://www.amazon.com/Palram-Arcadia-Carport-Patio-Cover/dp/B00O9X0Y9Q/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=carport&qid=1561924962&s=gateway&sr=8-25 Looks much better than those tent kind of ones AND can double as a picnic cover!

POST 9Original post

Why did you buy a house without a garage? Priorities, man, priorities.

POST 10Original post

I've had the Porsche sunshield protector - it's okay but its too solid and feels like it scratches things when you put it up. I'd opt for a more pliable one. You should definitely source a garage!

POST 11Original post

Really! Id rather buy a garage without a house... TC OST: If there is a wife involved, my plan might end up costing more than a house AND a garage.

POST 12Original post

Zackly. When we bought this place a couple years ago, a minimum requirement was parking for at least 10 cars. I think we had 17 here once, cramming them in. When we were house hunting and saw houses with parking for two, the response was always.... "next...".

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all your suggestions All. Car is a weekender. I really dont even drive during the week as I ferry into NYC and bike to the Ferry. Im going to either get one of those temp car tents or storage unit the car which is in the same town as me!

POST 14Original post

I’d probably go with a storage unit. Are there any high-end car storage companies near you? These companies will store your car indoors, and they have the ability to connect it to a battery tender, wash it for you, etc. Companies like this are often used by car collectors.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@Dennis C There is a storage unit co right around the corner in the next town, maybe 4 min drive. I need to check to see if they have electric to each unit for a tender. High end storage companies for exotic cars I am not sure. I have heard of a few in the city, but mainly love driving the car around the beach and coast in the summers.

POST 16Original post

Mice love cars that sit in storage...You've been warned!

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 15944707

Hopefully you can find something. We've got a few in Denver that store vehicles, plus they offer full detailing service, etc.

POST 18Original post

A) Build a garage B) ^^ If that's a definite no, a pop up tent/shed is useful but, as mentioned above - make sure it's properly anchored (ask me how I know). Also as mentioned above, mice/rodents are a real concern for these types of enclosures, as they're not well sealed. Best suited as a temporary solution. C) Storage facility - obviously, expense is a real concern with this. If you can afford to store, the expense may be better invested in a garage...

POST 19Original post

If mice/rodents are a concern, something like this would be awesome. Just note that it's rated for indoor use:

POST 20Original post

I tried one of the portable garages,, in general its very little protection, no humidity control, no protection from mice, bugs etc.. one winter and the car was trashed. (Oregon WET ) I would go for a commercial storage. Most dont offer power, but, mine has a incandescent light ,, I put the tender in a adapter in it. SO the tender only runs when someone hits the main light switch timer..

Your first post is to come in here and give us a back handed insult? Nice. If you need to come into Porsche 996 subforum to figure out how to build a garage for a Cayman, then you have bigger problems that need to be solved.

POST 24Original post

I would purchase a prefab garage unless you have unlimited time, are handy with a hammer and saw, and have a nearby Home Depot. I bought a Stoltzfus garage. All I had to do was clear an area and create a base.

POST 25Original post

Yes, a shed is an option. They make them with a roll-up door just for those reasons.

POST 26Original post

Nice. Can we get some larger pics (and more of them)? Also, ballpark price? My 911 is in the garage but I have an X5M that's baking on an adjacent parking pad daily. I'd love to protect that vehicle, too.

POST 27Original post

I purchased this garage during the early part of Covid. After considering the cost of lumber and time, I bought this unit for around twelve thousand dollars complete. After doing the math, I could not begin to match their prices if I had constructed it myself. Since I had such limited space, I chose to have this one-car unit placed in this spot after filling in the area with rocks, fill and drove my buddy's vibra roller over the area to compact several times and then followed by a jumping jack to set the gravel area for the base. The following week, they delivered the unit on Tuesday, and a few days later, a group of Amish carpenters raised the roof and finished the rest of the garage. After another few days, they sent a person who had attached a wheeling device to place the shed precisely on the base. They construct these units with fixtures and engineer them to take the punishment of transporting them over the open roads and meet all local building codes. I would check out their website as they offer many types of buildings and sheds from one car to several and some with two floors.....however, I am sure prices have jumped somewhat post-Covid and Old Joe. Overall, they construct a decent turn-key product and so far the mice have failed to enter....although I keep traps fresh. I thought about installing a lift, but the quick jack serves me well now. With this garage, I even managed to convinced my wife that a prefab building would look attractive and match the style and somewhat color of our existing house....although if I had to do it over, I would have chosen to bulldoze another area on the property and increase it to a wider two car garage.

My current situation.. Squirrels got a neighbors car last year. As long as I keep driving it they will stay away.

Similar to my current setup. Looks like you only get direct sunlight in that area 3 hours a day or so, yeah? Mine is in the shade (and dark) probably 20 hours of the day thanks to the surrounding structures and trees.

Thanks! Also, "Old Joe" has done and is doing a great job. If you blame anything, blame our bad response to COVID which had long lasting ripple effects that we are still feeling now.
