No competition on sound, sadly the 718 is very muted, as previously said on this thread I replaced my B GTS with a 718 Spyder pdk, I tried various exhausts on it and all failed to live up to the 981 sound track however just before I sold the Spyder earlier this year I fitted a JCR unsilenced back box and that did the trick, it sounded amazing.

Having to adjust the temp of the interior from time to time is not something I consider to be too difficult and it certainly wouldn't spoil my enjoyment of a convertible.

Almost no difference in performance between the S and the GTS, not worth worrying about in the real world, both sound glorious.
I’m currently lusting after a 981 GTS that’s 7 years old. It’s beautiful. Just over 10k on the clock.
7 years old. And £62,0000
Is this madness?
If it was a bit cheaper I would already have bought it. But it’s the best one in the market currently and it looks superb.
But 62k?
I don’t even know how much this cost new.
Is it that special?
https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en-GB/details/porsch...
Market is crazy high right now. Depends if you think inflation, rate rises and the energy crisis will outweigh an apparent limited component supply. It could be that in a few months values will look very different, despite the car salesmen thread expecting them to continue rising forever…
Market is mad at the moment.
In July 2020 I paid £ 39,750 for my Speed Yellow Boxster GTS from Ashgoods, car had 25k ish miles on the clock, full loaded with GTS Interior and carbon trim. Beautiful car, on X73 suspension.
Sold it back to them a year later for a hefty profit and it sold immediately for just under £ 50k.
As said above, at this level, maybe £55k a low miles on is worth it (they are brilliant), not so sure over £60k, even with low miles.
However, for the right person, the right colour and spec I'm sure someone will be persuaded.
Fab little sports cars.
It looks like a stunning example. Great colour and spec especially with the x73 suspension to sharpen it up even more.
These are actually the only car at the moment that could tempt me out of my Cayman R, just to experience something different. (maybe with a manual box though for my personal preference).
I'd be very interested in Mr Verts view on this as I believe he has owned both before.
As for the question of price - It does feel overpriced, and not convinced its a £60+ model. But the market is mad, its a great low mileage example from an OPC. So will never be cheap.
7 years old, only 10k miles, yet 6 previous owners. I know such cars tend to change hands more often than run of the mill stuff, but is this normal and no cause for concern?

Wow.
Feeling I’ve missed the boat a bit and now all that’s left are those mega expensive gondola rides….
That was real value and must have felt amazing to make a profit.

No worries from a franchise for me. I’ve noticed they sell a lot of 4/5 owner Boxsters
It looks like a nice example, plus the confidence of buying from an OPC with two years Warranty.
However:
- It does seem expensive, even at the current inflated prices - especially as there is widespread expectation of a big price correction in the coming months
- It would therefore only be worth buying if you intended to use and enjoy it, without being precious about adding mileage. It won't be an investment.
- If so, I'd want the next Full (4 year) Service included, and to make sure it has new(ish) tyres all round - although tread depths might be OK, they should not more than 2 years old. Plus any other added value that can be negotiated
- No. of owners is a bit of a worry - average ownership is just over a year and 1600 mls, so no one has fallen in love with it. That may be due to the X73 suspension. Whilst some might like it, most UK roads are pretty poor, and it can be tedious.
If in doubt, wait.

specsavers for you perhaps...a full blooded v10 vs a cooking flat 6...it's no contest.
Anyone paying £60k plus for a 7 yo Boxster GTS needs their brains tested, I can appreciate that it's a quality car but not at that price.

It'll likely be the X73 suspension. If you have any slightly loose teeth the x73 will remove them.for you..

I don't dispute the engine size....thats not what I am commenting on. It is one god awful looking car.
I paid just over £66k in 2014 for a pretty much fully loaded x73 model traded in 2018 27k non commuting miles for 43k. Cars are definitely way over priced. I never found x73 and 20" wheels an issue that many seem to

Well I'm pretty sure you're in the miniority on that, I'd say the Spyder with roof down is the best looking variant...nobody would give a Boxster GTS a second glance next to one.

+1...R8 soft top looks fabulous 👌
U sure ur not an audi man TT monkey? I'm just pointing out to the OP how silly it would be to spend £60 K on a Boxster given the alternatives...but if he really wants an overpriced Porsche then crack on!

Certainly something in the vaccine to call an r8 spyder ugly.
Back to the original question of whether it is worth it, for that money there’s actually not much else I’d want. I posted earlier about buying a 981 Spyder for around £70k and yes, I could have had a 911 (I did) or a Ferrari or an R8 but rather than perceived value, I’d far rather own and run the 981.

Is it worth £62k, probably not, but is any used sportscar currenty on sale worth what they are selling for?
If it is what you want, make them a
sensible
offer on it and let them decide, it is an OPC car which comes with two years of hassle free motoring, not something to dismiss on a car this age.
They are not making any more, how long until you find another one that ticks all the right boxes for you.
Personal choice but the colour would kill it for me, I had a 911 Gts in carmine and it always looks too dark in the flesh. I bought my 981 GTS earlier in the year, I hunted around for a Speed yellow one ( I wasn't sure they made one) but the pics of the one in this thread are stunning, that was exactly what I was after, I ended up with a nice spec car in Guards red and 20,000 miles.
Prices have jumped up this last 18 months and I was late to the party so paid more than I would have liked but in today's market it would look a bargain.
Not sure I could bring myself to spend £62k on one though and having previously owned a Spyder I wouldn't spend the extra money and I personally would take a 981 GTS PDK over a 981 Spyder every time.

Yes the R8 in coupe form is not particularly good looking to my eye. But the convertible looks very good + a V10. Ymmv of course since this is the Porsche forum after all!
£ for £ just shows what that kind of budget
could
buy.
If the OP's instincts are telling him it's mad then I think he's right
All this talk of 'missing the boat' etc. That normally precedes you know what with any asset price.
I bought my BGTS in late 2020 for £49k, and love it. It’s similar spec to this Carmine one, but with buckets. X73 is fine imho btw.
The only thing missing from both, which would be a dealbreaker if I was buying another (and for a moment I considered swapping my Rhodium Silver car for this red one - mine in silver is a bit boring), is proper climate control. Without it, you’re endlessly fiddling with the hot-cold & fan speed toggles.
Edited by AndyDubbya on Sunday 21st August 09:42
Agree with the Climate Control comment.
I had two 981 Caymans - an S with basic Aircon (never again) and a GTS with Climate.
I can’t believe Porsche even offered the basic system, and can only believe that buyers spec’d it not realising it wasn’t the full Climate.
A Boxster needs Climate with the roof up - maybe this contributed to the lack of love from past owners.
TTmonkey said:
Assume we are looking for this button? For auto? Why does it say ‘sync’?
Most of the GTS on auto trader don’t have it.
Sync is so both sides of the cabin are the same temperature. That is climate control by the way.

What you could buy is only one small factor though. Most people buying cars of this type have had many nice cars in the past and are looking for something specific. What Joe Public thinks in the Waitrose car park is unlikely to be much of a concern. Those who can afford a GTS at £60k could indeed buy an R8, but that doesn't mean to say they actually want one. Look at all the lunatics spending £140k on 20+ year old R34 Skylines when they could buy a pair of R35s for that money.
Porsches look fairly ordinary compared to their contemporaries so they're not going to wow randoms like an R8 is. Similarly, your £100k is also better spent on a 570s than a cooking 911 if you want to look like a superstar. However, given Porsches are held in insanely high regard by so many people, there's clearly more to it than just what engine and exterior you can get for £x.

this other than a McLaren of any variety would worry me due to stuff I have read/seen , that being said the couple I have actually seen look the Dogs
Done 3600m in 2 months since selling my Cayman R and buying this Boxster GTS. X73 is a non issue for comfort. I can’t speak to values as mine is higher miles but mega spec. What I can say is I have rarely enjoyed a car as much. It’s a good size, plenty quick enough in the real world, makes a great noise, handles superbly and is just brilliant transport.

Yes, I swapped out of a Cayman R and jumped into the GTS. I seem to change my cars a lot, not for any particular reason other than I like to try as many different cars as I can if something takes my fancy.
The R was brilliant, worthy of all the praise it gets, but I wanted something I would get more use of for trips with my better half. I was on the hunt for a V12 Vantage but couldn't find one in the spec I wanted.
The GTS I felt, was a brilliant Porsche. It was on X73 suspension for 20" Turbo wheels and for me was a great combination. I didn't think it was too harsh at all, but then I was used to the 'R' and have always preferred a firmer set up.
The GTS felt a tad larger on the road but it's still a fairly small sports car. The ride and suspension were near perfect on the roads around me. Yes, you lose some steering feel of course but that's about the only fair criticism I could level at the car.
More modern cabin, beautifully trimmed, really comfortable on long journeys, quick, responsive and the noise is fabulous. Some may get a bit tired of the exhaust system, but as it's switchable you can just turn it to stealth mode when you want.
The manual cars do suffer a tad with the gear ratios, being pretty long especially noticeable in 2nd (over 80mph). The PDK 'box for me suited it better and is slightly quicker in the shifts to the first generation.
Overall, I think the GTS is a fabulous modern Porsche. Not as razor sharp as the 'R', but still a brilliant package.
Kept it a year and fancied another change so went for a Spyder...tried the 981 but eventually opted for a 987. Read into that what you will

I've been looking for a BGTS for the last 18 months, and in my opinion this one isn't special enough to warrant £62k even from a OPC. As previously described in this thread prices have steadily risen since Covid but they do seem to have plateaued over the last 2 months, given this is the prime selling season perhaps there's a steer there. At 62k with so many owners I think you'll find plenty of other options if you keep looking, although it seems most GTS's are white and finding a nice one in a proper colour isn't easy. Although if you can spend another 15k you will find lots of low mileage Spyder's available, but again most are white.
Unless time is critical I'd stay patient and watch the market.
To the OP - I know Brooklands - have done servicing and parts there. They are great guys and I like the fact it’s an independent but Porsche approved
Every time I’ve been there I’ve looked at the prices on their used stock and thought they were toppy
If I were you I’d buy one from Ashgood (generally cheap) RPM or JZM and then pay Brooklands for a 113pt check and a warranty.
Eg the carmine red one on AT with 18k miles which also has climate control. Not a fan of turbo wheels personally but apart from that you would be £12k to the good if you can get it for £50k, warranty etc is about £1500 all in for 2 years. 18k miles is still low for a 7 year old car!

Agreed turbo wheels are gash.
I quite like white cars but the wife has a white TTS so would look naff parked alongside. I live the deep carmine red too. White cars also seem not to be cherished…. Check the white BGTS on auto trader which is cheaper…. But has none Porsche servicing and ‘RADAR’ brand tyres! I assume these are some ultra high performance brand???
Yeah that’s the other car what I’ve been looking at to be fair.
The other car is I think in Glasgow which is a long haul for me.
I think you've nailed it with the word ‘patience’.

Side scoops loot great on the car, I assume thats the GT4 scoops added on?

If you mean this one, it looks like it has the boggo air conditioning to me - there's no "SYNC" button next to the right hand toggle.

Previous owner did it so I can’t be sure but yes, think so
Also after a 981 S or a GTS if they fall within budget. I was keenly looking at 981's a couple of years ago while still saving for a house deposit, promising myself ill get one when i finally get a house. House is bought but I cant bring myself to paying the current prices, knowing what they were a couple years ago. I dont really want to spend more than 40k so will likely be an S rather than a GTS, but also willing to hold off for the winter to see what happens to prices.

GTS's are close to £40K already. After the winter there will be some starting with a 3.

There were some. But recently they’ve hardens into the 50s.
There was one on there that was 40s a few days ago. But it didn’t have full PSH.

£44K
there are currently 7 x 981 GTS starting with a 4. and x4 on PH
Most around mid 40's of that selection.
I have seen low 40's. Starting with a 3 is quite possible.

Sorry yes I didn’t specifically say Boxsters in the OP but this thread is only about Boxster GTS.
There’s a couple starting at £49k but everything else is higher.
I have no interest in Cayman.
As much as I rated my GTS, for around £60k I think I’d probably be tempted by a mint low miles 997 C2S
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/13796596
For £40-£50k they’re hard to ignore, over that there’s some decent competition.

I moved from a 997.2 to a 981 admittedly a Spyder) and didn’t regret it. And I think OP wants a convertible. Back to original question - if you can afford the GTS in first post, do it and stop worrying about what it was worth or whether you paid over the odds!! You lose money on cars period.

I doubt many buyers will be happy to wait for years to own a particular car.
If you are serious about buying one all you are going to end up doing is buying the very same cars with more owners/miles on the clock for the same/more money than when you started looking.
You would have been better off buying one and enjoying it, if your spec is so tight you cannot find one I would take the view that 90% of what we want is a lot better than 100% of nothing.

Absolutely. I’d distill the spec down to the essentials - likely interior options, and X73 vs PASM - otherwise GTS 981s are all very similar, and take it from there.

A Boxster GTS with sensible spec is high 40s at worst

True, I must say I regret letting a one owner BGTS slip away in June, Carmine Red, had everything (GTS Interior, PDK, Auto a/c, Bose, Cruise, Black Wheels) 12k miles, could have bought it for £48k privately..........

I see Caymans are slightly cheaper than Boxsters in the current 718 range, but I thought the reverse was true for the 981s, i.e. Boxsters previously had a lower list price ?

Part of the problem is you read stuff on here that makes it sound like not having a certain option turns a Boxster into a Transit diesel with the sills hanging off.
Perfect example, auto A/C, had I believed some of the rubbish people post on here you would think not having it is a deal breaker. Can you imagine the trauma in having to adjust aircon once in a while and even then only with the roof up, in a country where the sun comes out every death of a pope? I seemed to have got away with not having it in the recent warm weather without even having to see a shrink.
Other stuff can be retro fitted, eg Cruise, mine didn't have it, 100% original retro fit is cheap and doable.
No paddles on the wheel (buttons), change the wheel.
Buy one, drive it, enjoy, life is too short.

It seems a little mad to me plenty 981 GTS around for more reasonable prices, and in reality you have to remember it's only aesthetically better than an equivalent S, if it had the 3.8 it would be a different story.

This is very true, unique to PH.
Op. I am pretty sure that the car you are looking at was being sold by an indie in Wandsworth for 56k up until a month ago when it disappeared and then turned up at the OPC with another 6k on the price.
By the way you aren't mad as ai am having the same thoughts but struggling with the fact that Boxster are currently overpriced
I had been half in the market on and off for about 2 years but kept buying other cars to scratch an itch or two but had also kept an eye on the boxster market watching to see if a yellow one was gonna come up for sale , I wasn’t that fussed about any other colour so never that desperate to buy.
when I sold my Macan Daily I decided to treat myself and ordered a new fully loaded speed yellow BGTs but with the delays It became apparent it wasn’t coming anytime soon , I decided I didn’t want to wait and I actually prefer the more aggressive front end of the 981 to the 718gts so I decided to go back to my 981 search, some cars I’d previously looked at were been re advertised for up to £10k more, for a few months i kept an eye on the mark seeing which way it was going but it didn’t look as though things were getting any cheaper heading into spring.
the car I bought I thought was a little expensive but 20k miles and fairly nicely specced , with main options I wanted , GTS int, leather dash and carbon pack , half alcantara seats and steering wheel, I really don’t like leather in soft tops, heated seats, PDK ,Bose , pdsl lights and the wheels I like, it has a few other bits which is a bonus , only thing it didn’t have that I really wanted was a heated steering wheel, i had carbon buckets in my Spyder and I could take or leave those for touring, I found them hard work , it has the fancy climate but that was never a deal breaker for me , anyway I concluded they are not coming down in price anytime soon so I paid the money and the first sunny run out over the lakes convinced me I had done the right thing.
think we have done 5,000 miles touring over the last few months. I bought the car to use and if I lose a few quid it won’t be the end of the world , last couple years I’ve been fortunate to capitalise on some of my other cars going up so it will be swings and roundabouts .

Agree. With Climate you set it once and rarely need to touch it again - it does everything for you - automatically.
Whereas, the basic Aircon needs constant fiddly adjustment.
It’s interesting talking about deal breakers.
Everyone’s different. Aircon for me is fine either way….
My bmw 4 series have climate, my Audi TTS has manual.
Doesn’t bother me.
One thing that does bother me is for example this:
Not a GTS, but this looks lovely…..
But then…. NOPE
Absolutely hate these colourful interiors.

Depends what you mean , yes it doesn't change the fundamentals but if you want climate and it isnt there every time you drop your butt in it you are going to think 'wish it had climate' that would spoil my enjoyment , my opinion

Most cars specified with climate have missed the options you actually want in a sports car.
In the Boxster you should have the roof down most of the time, when you do this you either have the heating on full because it's freezing or it's too hot and you've got the cold air blasting at you.
Somewhere in the middle is just fine the rest of the time, but I concede a rotary dial would have been better than the buttons.

I assume you are aware that the debate going on here is the difference between having climate and just having manual aircon?
Having to adjust the temp of the interior from time to time is not something I consider to be too difficult and it certainly wouldn't spoil my enjoyment of a convertible.
But I fully accept there are some out there that would have a problem with that.

Mad. I’ve never driven mine with windows up and roof on and have never needed aircon or climate.
Different people think different things, who’d have thought? It doesn’t mean what they think is rubbish, or mad. If no-one thought climate control was necessary, Porsche wouldn’t have it as an option, and/or no-one would tick it.
The good thing is, the OP is now aware of a potential pitfall to a particular option being missing. If he doesn’t care, fine. Can we move on now?
AndyDubbya said:

It isn't necessary, any more than having electric seat adjustment is necessary, it is just another way of Porsche adding to their profit margin. They obviously could have made everything standard in the first place had they wanted to.
How much does cruise control cost as an extra, the only physical difference is the stalk and the cowling, peanuts to Porsche, but hundreds to the retail customer that had ticked it.
Yes, now we can move on.
My position: do what you like, I don’t mind, but for me xxx is necessary
Your position: xxx isn’t necessary and anyone who thinks it is, is wrong
See the difference?
Having recently returned from a road trip in our B25 to Italian Lakes and back where the temperatures were hitting high thirties every day in the afternoons and sometimes getting stuck in slow moving traffic I can definitely say having the ability to put the roof up and climate on full blast is an absolute necessity.
The B25 has dual climate, the 2 Boxsters before that and the current Cayman had/have the standard system. While the controls for both are fiddly, the dual climate is absolutely worth the additional cost and I would now not spec a new car without it.
As to whether it's a deal breaker on a second hand car that would party depend on the overall spec but 2 similar cars side by side the one with dual climate would get my money potentially at the loss of some other "essential" extras.
YMMV

I don't care what options anyone has in their car, I don't have to pay for them or drive it.
If I do not consider certain options important (to me) I don't have them, simple as that.
Going back to the OP.
I have a Macan GTS and it's is so good I traded my F-Type for a 981S Boxster.
I actually wasn't bothered about the GTS interior on the Boxster as I feel the Alcantara makes it a bit dark, so was happy when I found a 1 owner low mileage S with every option ticked, all order papers, original invoice, OPC service receipts etc.
The 981 is just an awesome car in the 3.4 guise.
If it's not too expensive for you....life is too short......buy it, drive the s**t out of it and enjoy.
I would however negotiate for them for retro fit cruise

OP here.
I note a couple more higher mileage GTS’ on auto trader this morning, private sellers. End of summer sales or people deprioritising for coming recession (or worst) perhaps?
Have also been looking at high spec-ed Boxster S instead as power difference is marginal. Love the yellow S for sale at Redline up in Knarebrook. Just a little expensive and a long way away from me to go and see. But a lovely car. It’s missing Bose though which concerns me. Everything else is there for me though. Gorgeous car. Not usually my colour choice.
What are regular S tuning options? Anything g worth considering? Where does the GTS get its extra bop from?
The lack of the GTS front bumper on the 981 S model was a deal breaker for me, always reminded me of looking at an Se Bmw compared to an M sport, just look too plain, I think the same about the 718 GTS, when I ordered my new one, I had plans to change the front end to Spyder spec.
Plastic dash and no Bose on that car you mentioned, for me 2 things that I was not compromising on, my first 3.4 S had standard dash sound system plus and Spyder had leather dash and Bose, the later made it a nicer place to be for me and you spend a lot of time in there but as previously said spec is a very personal thing.

Almost no difference in performance between the S and the GTS, not worth worrying about in the real world, both sound glorious.
As another poster has said, the full leather trim is a must over the basic plastic dashboard.

Hadn’t considered that.
That car is a nice spec and very low mileage at 10,xxx miles, but already got 6 previous owners so that alone would make it worth a little less. How can 6 previous owners (is it now on it 7th and you would be the 8th??) so such little mileage? It’s not an ultra rare car but seems a little odd to have one owner per year but each only doing 1,500 miles before punting it on.
Sure the OPC have done all the checks but looks a bit rich to me.

Agreed.
I would have bought either, it is hard enough trying to find the right car with acceptable spec/options so widening the net is only going to make life a bit easier.
I particularly dislike alcantara and most GTS 981s I came across had it, so I ended up with an S which I am delighted with and certainly don't feel I am missing out on anything.

There is very little difference between the 3.4l and the 4.0l GTS let alone this one. An S with chrono is side by side with the 981 GTS.
The best bits on the GTS are the front end, the interior trim and the spec you get as standard, no brainer when new but the value over a good S is limited now.
I think if your after a particular spec the GTS kind of has it all, which finding an S with it all is very difficult. I originally started looking at S models back in 2015 but after seeing a GTS I brought that. You do pay more the for the GTS bit it seems more of a premium trim level, you'll pay more but you'll get more back too.
To me the GTS felt a much nice car, exterior and interior. I think the following differences between the S and GTS as standard.
PASM or X73
Sports Exhaust
Chrono
20" Wheels
Sound symposer (this makes a nice difference for the Boxster, its like 2 different cars with roof up and down)
Front and Rear Lights are different I believe
Front Bumper
Rear Diffuser
GTS Interior Pack - Option (Makes it really nice inside)
Go see both options, see what you prefer, its crazy right now thinking what I paid for my nearly new BGTS in 2016 is what you pay for the same car now. But that's what the market dictates.
A ‘private sale’ provides the buyer with very limited protection.
Personally, I would consider a private purchase, if the car was exceptional and the price was attractive. But, not without the Porsche Extended Warranty.
On a 7 year old, £50k car, the security of the inspection and warranty protection shouldn’t be underestimated.
The seller can add this, with this year’s Service, for c.£1,500. The buyer can’t.

Do all the 981s have this?
Is it done via the audio or some other way?

Technically the buyer can, it would just be post purchase and at the risk of something being found requiring rectification. Perhaps a useful pre-purchase bargaining tool?

No, on GTS, but I think can be disconnnnnected.
The new Gts boxster will set you back considerably more today though, pretty sure when I ordered my new one I ended up at £78k without going mad, just with a few bits I wanted, my 981gts regardless of its new price in 2015 started to look value and when I looked around at other cars at that price point, there was nothing else that I fancied.

Perfect - I have an S with a PSE and I like it just fine the way it is.
I've added it to mine, I think it provides a nice howl up the rev range. It's funny on the GTS it's considered to be a good thing whereas the 991 and 718 guys are blocking theirs up.

I thought it made a great difference, when the roof it is up it sounds awesome, when the roof is down it sounds great too!

I sold my CGTS 2015 this year privately for 53K, I just got a 111 check from Porsche for the new owner but no warranty. I think thats fair and then the buyer can buy a warranty if they so choose.
That blue car has no GTS interior pack, personally thats on of the highlights of the GTS.

Paid 59K for mine in 2016 from Porsche with 1000 miles on the clock. Basically a new high spec car. 3 years ago and after 3 years of ownership putting 12K miles on it sold it for 50K. I thought that was good back then as that was to a dealer who sold it for 56! These cars have always held there money really well, even before the Covid bubble, or should we say the reality as I think these car prices are the new norm along with everything else.

Aye, I paid £52k for my CGTS a year ago and was aware I was potentially buying at the peak, but the prices haven't moved too much. Only 14 on AT, with the leggiest examples being around 45k and most pristine examples over 55k.
The forum is littered with various car threads in which people are saying, "not buying at these prices, just waiting for the correction." I'm not sure what correction they are waiting for, nor am I convinced that they are the few who will see a correction large enough to simultaneously drop the price and leave them unaffected.

Why selling Dan? Looks like the kind of car to keep forever…..?
So I dont really know anything about living with pccbs. How often, compared to regular ion disks and normal pads, do they need replacing?
They don’t rust which is nice, but I heard they can crack? Anything else damage them?
Assuming still horrendously expensive to replace?
no rust and no brake dust either which is nice!
bigger and better but lighter = lower unsprung weight = better handling
can be damaged by too much hard track use, getting gravel caught in there, or using aggressive wheel cleaner (which you dont need as they dont get baked on brake dust). Or getting chipped by a bad tyre fitter.
lots of people suggest taking the discs off and replacing with surface transform (cheaper than porsche), or swapping for steels
personally i've had no issues
what is telltale is cracks but actually chips and "delamination" is the thing. they should be mirror smooth...any roughness is a red flag
selling to buy a 4 litre GTS. first time I've had a convertible for at least 10 years and I wasnt sure...but I've loved it. So having experimented a bit at this price point, I'm going all in
I've made the mistake in the past of thinking I needed a "drivers car". Cayman R a good example. 968 CS. Tuthill aircooled hotrod. I've enjoyed this GTS more than any of those...roofdown at any opportunity....surprisingly quick...with a little bit of edge but so so useable...and, with roofdown you dont need to be going at licence melting speed to put a big smile on your face

Hi Dan - That is a really interesting summary of where you found yourself (and also considering Mr Vert's comments from a few pages back - belated thanks for the response).
I've had my Cayman R for about 16 months now and absolutely love it and have put nearly 7k miles on it (some on the CR forum would be getting a cold sweat over that) . I've done 2 trips from home (Hertfordshire) up to and around the highlands plus some other jaunts, and a back-road detour this Sunday from the collecting cars meet at Biscester Heritage make me love it even more. They are stunning road cars.
BUT, I sometimes flirt with the thought of a BGTS and hearing what you've experienced and what you say about thinking you needed a 'driver's car' isn't helping. My wife might even vaguely like it. I might need to sample one soon and see for myself. After all its great to experience different cars despite how good the current one is.
I shouldn't worry about the pics on your AT advert, they look great and you seem to have found a stunning spec on that example which will sell it to anyone looking and understanding those options. Having PCCB, LSD and the buckets is superb. If it were manual too the temptation may have been too great!
Good luck with the new car hunt and interested to hear your thoughts on the difference.

I've asked about the belt swap and PDK service too. Went to look at a Cayman S in Wolves at the weekend, looked great but no PSE which I really want!!
PDK service isn't due until 12 years/120k miles so even if looking at an early 981 car it is unlikely to be due yet.
An S car with the spec you're after could still be a good buy than stretching to a GTS.

I bought my GTS as the only OPC manual available start of 2022. I specifically wanted a GTS, manual gearbox and a good colour (no black, silver, grey or white). The concession I had to make was the interior as car came with full leather option but I knew I could sort this one way or another.
Back end of 2022 a 718 GTS salvage car appeared and I bought the entire interior and sold my full leather interior - I now had a 981 GTS spec I was very happy with and a base car for further mods.

My wheels also satin, maybe light in pic. I drove the 718 GT4 & Spyder as a prospective upgrade, came away completely content with my car tbh. The incremental improvements aren’t worth the the £40k above and beyond my car and I’d rather chuck £10k at mine and sharpen it up a little further.

I’m going to improve brakes and yes 991/718 6 pots with some Girodisc/pad upgrade is on radar along with Paragon Brakes Alcon upgrade - friend has it and is very pleased with performance and aesthetic.

I was thinking more long the lines of getting OEM Carrera S upgraded brakes so staying within the Porsche approved warranty as i want to renew that next year.
That said, an OPC are likely to charge an eye watering sum to do the upgrade!

Just took my BGTS 981 out for a blat after cleaning and likely tucking her up for winter.
I've covered close to 3k miles since April which has been only weekend use but that speaks volumes as to how much i enjoy driving it.
Whilst playing with the paddles and listening to that exhaust all thoughts of changing to a 718 have gone.
Plus, i spotted a vid earlier of a back to back comparison 981 Vs 718 and seems the 981 offers more compliancy in normal dampers.
All in all i'm super happy and don't feel the need to change anytime soon which i massively unlike me!

2014 PDK Cayman GTS. 53,700miles. Full OPC service history, warranty till end of Sep 2025. 4 former keepers, 300miles since last serviced.
Guards Red, black wheels with silver lip, GTS interior, Standard GTS equipment so PSE, sport chrono, PASM etc...
Has 4 x new N rated Pirelli on it done less than 200miles, new Porsche battery fitted earlier in year.
Currently SORN as not used. Needs MOT and private plate removing. Needs front splitter/bumper insert replacing as someone has painted it badly in past. Have got spare to fit just not got round to it.
Just picked up a 981 Boxster GTS after almost procuring a 718 GTS 4.0. Emission regulations have drastically altered the auditory delight nestled within these engines. It still sounds good but not as divine.
Prices of the 981 GTS remain surprisingly strong in the Australian market but seemed to have nosedived elsewhere

Tks for this as I've been mulling over what my potential next car might be.
Prices reflect the state of our economy I think

Yes, GTS’s basically double a Base. Also a more limited market. Would have liked a S or GTS but settled for a Base. With PSE it sounds basically as good though !

Expensive if no warranty as effectively paying a £2k premium versus buying another GTS at OPC High Wycombe (albeit with 20k more miles), and that one as Porsche Approved will come with a fresh 2 year warranty
It was on my shortlist a few months back but I decided spending a few grand more for a 718 4.0 gts with 2900 miles and 2.5 years Porsche warranty was the better deal
Thanks guys for the comments, dealer has come back saying two owners and no OPC warranty, also they may have taken a deposit on it so might be sold anyway.
Still loving mine. Bought in December 22 after I got tired of waiting 18 months plus for the 4.0 GTS I had on order.
Bought on 25k, it’s now on 33 and every one of those miles has been a blast, and I very much doubt I’ll ever sell it.
Thank you, yes on H&R springs with PASM shocks.
Missed updating on a few upgrades in last few months.
Numeric Shifter - what an amazing feeling shifter, we are really starting to get close to the feel of my old S2000’s shift feel.
Also added a Mr12volt CarPlay upgrade too, game changer and with the steering wheel makes the car feel as modern as the 718’s. Unique thing with this unit is it uses the MOST connection which means you have superb sound quality too.

any issues with bumps/slopes?
i have X73 on my 981CGTS and have a had a few scrapes here and there but usually just the plastic guard (not sure what it's called) under the car
how much lower is that to normal PASM?

Oooo interesting, fellow ex S2k owner here, the gearbox in that car was sublime, unrivalled indeed.
Would you mind sharing a little more detail please. Can you change gear without moving your elbow (like the good old days ?) and is the install complex? Very interested in this, didn t know it existed. Thanks

Standard Ride Height
PASM -10mm
X73 -20mm
Eibach -20mm
H&R -25mm
Very occasionally scrape speed bumps but of no great issue tbh.
thanks for the info
so your car is only 5mm lower than X73. looks lower than that?
Just talking of x73 and ride heights my x73 has been on from factory 2014 and settled 15mm or so. Thus it’s sitting lower than gt4 today and pretty damn slammed! One of the interesting findings from a great trip to center gravity, highly recommended!

The Numeric mechanism just gives a very controlled, mechanical feeling shift. It’s not made using it any more difficult it’s just more precise/solid feeling.
The throw length can be adjusted to be shorter than the gt4 OEM short shift kit, I started a bit too low and adjusted to what felt right. Install took about an hour and very simple, remove some trim pieces, remove OEM plastic shift mechanism and replace everything like for like. 3/10 complexity for a home mechanic.
Recommended upgrade albeit not a cheap one, I pickle up the unit secondhand for £500, new they are considerably more.
I went to see a very low mileage 981 GTS last week, couldn't get properly under the car but managed to take some pictures with my phone, anyone seen anything like this before.......?
For anyone interested it's the most expensive blue one advertised on AT currently at £61,995.
Edited by Spevs on Wednesday 6th August 12:26
Yep, it's the PSE valve.
Vacuum operated unlike the 992 version.
It still opens and closes when in Sport mode, but being vacuum operated means you can physically limit it's travel with a bearing collar ...

It’s a hole that’s been patched by the look of it. Good spot so it’s a negotiating point for you. 62K seems a lot. I’ve bought an R8 V10 spyder with the double clutch box and only 27K miles this summer. 53K and It’s immaculate. Have you considered one of these?
I do understand if only a Porsche would do of course.

Not sure if it is allowed or not, but I am unfortunately selling my 981 Cayman GTS after over 2.5 years of ownership. Changes in life, with house renovations etc has changed my priorities.
It's been a great car, with full Porsche Service History, and I have recently installed new front brakes and new Pirelli P Zeros N rate within the last 200 miles. Its also got the likes of the carplay module too.
Its on SoR here if anyone is interested:

Fantastic the way these old cars hold their value. Given the recent news about the final ICE versions being canned this is probably a great investment.
If think the whole investment thing for most cars is well and truly over . If you can own a car and lose relatively little then it's a bonus .

Whats the specs and tyre sizing?

I tried my friends Weiss Gold wheels on the car a few years ago and liked the combo. I really don’t like Aurum Gold with Guards are the two colours are both strong so fight with each other.
The new wheels are a champagne gold which has a bit more colour depth than Weiss but still without heading towards Aurum.

Yes Apex VS-5RS - 20” 9j/11j both et50 - Conti SC7’s 245/35 & 295/30 OEM GT4 sizes.
It’s a bit over tyred for the GTS power but I plan to move to a 718 Spyder so they’ll then be perfect sizing for that too.
I haven’t a full down the side pic but this is slightly better. I do run front -1.5° and rear -2.5° camber which help tucks them in nicely. The rear needs a 3mm spacer to clear PASM strut which is wider than standard strut at bottom.

Largely depends on your budget I guess .
Last week I spotted a couple on AT & PH but high 40's to over 50 at dealers.
What's your requirements spec wise ?

I am a big fan of the B GTS and that would be my chosen colour but that to me looks crazy money in todays market , My car was Guards / a higher spec car with mileage in the mid 20"s and I had it for sale for months at £47k and never had any interest and that was over 2 years ago and prices have certainly softened since then.
asking price is one thing, getting someone to pay it is another. Anyone owning one of these from new like the 981 Spyder or 987 Spyder has had great value in terms of depreciation , were they early £ 50s when new in 2015?

A quick google and........
UK Market: For the UK, the price was approximately £52,000 to £58,000, plus optional extras and fees.
Price comparison: Even at the higher end of the original price range, a 981 GTS was still around £30,000 less than an entry-level 911 Cabriolet at the time.
Resale value: The 981 GTS has held its value well in the used market, partly because it features a naturally aspirated engine that many enthusiasts prefer over the four-cylinder engines in some newer models.
Not unreasonable to have spent another 10k on top for options
This is the thing though, cars with low mileage are either at the new car price or at least very close to it. With these cars being or very close to being 10 years old now it's very unusual for a Boxster, and hard to get your head around to spend the new car money on a 10 year old car.
Shows these boxsters are finally being recognised for the fantastic sports cars they are, just not good when your looking to buy.
It's definitely a knock on from the boxster losing 2 cylinders!

I have a 981S. I was surprised to see recently that after 2 years of ownership and 6,000 miles, it has a suggested asking price on Autotrader that's slightly more than I paid for it.

Weren't the 78s around £40k in 2016? The cheapest Boxster 718 on AT is a 2016 with 80,000 miles at £29,445.

A bit more. A lightly spec'ed (aside from PASM and PTV) base 718 Cayman was £46,430 when I ordered mine in 2016. Boxsters finally became a little more expensive than Caymans with the 718 launch, so I'm guessing maybe £48k OTR and not heavy on spec for a 718 Boxster back then.
Just had a look at AT. Not sure much else holds value like these at 8-9 years old. Remarkable.
[Edit: Annual depreciation on the one I bought back then looks like it would have been about 4% per annum over the last 9 years. Not remarkable. Ridiculous!]

Amazing residuals all around really, these were £39,878 IIRC when they came out, I added a PDK box at 2 grand and the extra range tank but not much else for a very early 40s purchase price back in 2016.
Values will only continue to firm up I guess now they've stopped making them, very cheap motoring really considering depreciation is usually the biggest cost of ownership. 40+ mpg as well when driven sensibly. You'd have to do considerable mileage indeed in an EV to make the fuel savings offset the huge EV depreciation.

Not really. After all the initial gripes about the sound of the engine, it became pretty clear that the performance of the turbo 4 engines was really exceptional, and they are very easy to live with. I'm back in a pair of F6 718s (GTS and RS), but I've had 2 of the 2.0T cars, and I'd have another turbo one in a heartbeat.
The prices for 981/718 cars are firm because, frankly, they re so good for UK driving.
As far as the 981 goes - the engine is a gem. The pre-GPF era sound above 4k is superb. It s quick enough, handles like a go-kart, natural grip is incredible. They re comfortable, modern enough without having to deal with touch screens for everything. They re robust, and if you care, the economy is fine, too. It can be sensible through town one minute, and standing up the hair on the back of your neck, the next..
It is an all-round car that just provides enjoyment. There are objectively better cars, faster ones, better this or that, but the real peach-factor is when everything comes together in the way these have.
I have a very high spec manual 981 Cayman S which i got 5.5 years ago on 12 thousand miles. I ve spent a long time looking, and I really haven t found anything that would tempt me away without adding another 40k to mine. My only issue is that I live in a different country to it, so don t get to drive it nearly as often as I d like. Consequently, it s on 25k miles. Great for resale value, but what would I get to replace it?

Summed up nicely I feel.
I've considered the same re replacement. 718 GT4, GTS but for the same spec as my 981 they'd be at least a 30k uplift and I'd still miss the noise.
I'm considering buying a 981 GT4 so I'll have my summer PDK convertible and a car I can use during the winter months and track days .
Seeing 981 GT4's go through CC's for mid 50's all in I can't see much financial downside apart from running costs.
Some good online back to back reviews of the 718 GT4 Vs the 981 seem to suggest sticking with the older car.
Also, i do now much prefer the smaller footprint of the 981 over modern day 911's.
What could you do to improve it?? lose 1-200kg, add back hydraulic steering... give it GT front suspension?
I think 981 is peak...(bias) I love the slight design tweaks of the 718, but I don't love the powerplants as much, despite Porsche's obvious engineering know-how and incremental progress... and thats all subjective.
The Porsche 'challenge' is never ending with each iteration doing enough to make a deserving case for 'peak'
Although I do REALLY feel 991.2 onwards with the mass loss of NA and manual is a proper line in the sand...in a sad/bad way...moving towards tech and stats to earn their place...which is a zero sum game when everyone can fight that fight....before it was based on feel, build quality and character.... of which Porsche held some big cards.
Anyway....that yellow one.... yes
yes please.
Yep I took a GTS 4.0 for a spin last service, fantastic car but the additional 40 grand necessary to change just didn’t seem worth it. Will hang on to my pre gpf four turbo.

As a daily, my first Porsche, a relatively pov. spec. new 2017 Cayman 2.0T was probably the best so far. Not that I haven't enjoyed all those since, and I love the current GTS 4.0, but the basic pre gpf manual base model was sweet in every way, and easily the most bang per buck. I had a post gpf 2021 2.0T in identical specification as another new car some time after, and unfortunately the engine management changes (I'm guessing for emissions) meant it was 95% as nice to drive, but only 95%.
Don't blame you for sticking with it, 2.0 or 2.5. Those early four turbo 718s are special. In a different way to the 981s of course, but special none the less.

I concur on the 4 pots .
I had a day at PEC when they were the current boxster and cayman models and thoroughly enjoyed my day in them.
Whilst I might not have pulled the trigger on the manual 718 2.0 I drove, the PDK 2.5 was a gem of a car.
Not sure what an S model goes for but if I needed a daily I wouldn't hesitate in having one.

Out of interest what didn't you like about the 718 BGTS ?
Sorry it was a Cayman GTS. Needed to free up some money for home improvements.
Had 3 previous 981's and really prefer them to be honest, and the sound helps.
Fancy trying a boxster this time, let me know if you're going to sell.

The steering feel is easily sorted by putting a 981 steering map on. It's already present in the steering module ECU thing, just needs enabling by PIWIS or in my case a ThinkDiag dongle. Transformed my CGTS. Made the car feel so much more agile.

True, I must say I regret letting a one owner BGTS slip away in June, Carmine Red, had everything (GTS Interior, PDK, Auto a/c, Bose, Cruise, Black Wheels) 12k miles, could have bought it for £48k privately..........

Can I be big enough to apologise when I am wrong, I had you down as a complete time waster
Looks lovely, enjoy
No need to aplogise, as can be seen from many of the posts on here I've seen quite a few very low mileage but expensive 981's and whilst mine doesn't have the sweet exhaust note of a 981 GTS, it is very nice indeed and a lot newer..............

Newer is generally better, but when you are completely happy with the incarnation you already have and the closest newer equivalent comes with less of what you like for more than twice the money the incentive to trade upwards simply wasn't and still isn't there in my case.

Now for sale at Adrenaline Collective as I traded it for a GT4.
Currently saved in my Autotrader shortlist. Had my F-Type 3 years and fancy a change.
Does it still have all the hidden goodies installed, short shifter etc?
Will you be selling the side pods?
I don't see Bose mentioned in the advert. Any sound system upgrades?
I would love this car with a shorter final drive.
Might PM you a few further questions if you don't mind.

No short shifter and wheels were kept, everything else remains. Side pods were removed after a couple of months of fitting so they are long gone.
Car has Bose with a Mr12volt CarPlay upgrade and sounds great tbh.
I don’t receive PM’s on here, have no idea why tbh.

If you want fun, not residuals, buy a Boxster 987.1 2.7 manual for £6 - 8,000.
I did last month. The best value sports car right now.
Surely the residuals would be rock solid on that?

Yep, if you get a good one, it is very unlikely to depreciate much.
Worth bearing in mind that the bills can be big!
Well regrettably I missed out on Riskins old gts.
I'm after ideally a manual, low mileage gts. Again ideally with gts interior pack.
If anyone is considering selling please let me know, I will pay considerably more than trade bids for the right car.
Thanks all!

Was collected by new owner this weekend. I m hoping they continue to love it as an enthusiast.
Not been on here for a while but had thoughts this weekend on selling my car.
Mind me asking what your car sold for ?
I have a Carmine GTS PDK 29.5k MIles FPSH Satin Wheels Porsche warranty until next April .
It has full carbon interior with Alcantara pack ( steering wheel , seats and gear lever ) and i'm pretty sure im the 2nd owner from new.
My heart says keep it but head says its not getting used and i'm not so much into the whole car scene these days

If only a manual!
Its funny as this is my first PDK but now i wouldn't have anything else.
Age might have something to do with that though !

I am a big manual fan but a 981 is the last car I would buy again with a gearstick, It is how I ended up with my 987/2 as they have much better ratio'd gearing.

The specialists were offering me between £38.5-40k knowing the car needed a fresh set of tyres. This was approximately £5-6k higher than similar time 12 months ago. Market definitely strengthened on the GTS probably being dragged up by rising 981 Spyder prices.

What’s happening with Spyder prices?
