Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'actuator, easy fix' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'actuator, easy fix' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect fully' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Alas it’s still just the working assumption - I have the new big clip that goes over the silencer but not had a chance to get it fitted yet

I also can’t see any obvious soot around the flange, although it’s difficult to inspect fully with everything in place.

No change whatsoever when the clutch pedal is pressed, so I don’t think it’s clutch or release bearing related.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I’m trying to track down a metallic rattle on my 2003 996 Turbo (standard K16 turbos, Kline exhaust, otherwise essentially stock mechanically at the moment).
The noise has been difficult to pinpoint, but after having the car on a lift I believe it’s coming from the passenger-side header/turbo area, most likely around the header-to-turbo flange or manifold area rather than the turbo itself or the catalytic converter.
Symptoms
Metallic rattle/buzz rather than a deep knock.
Present at idle.
No change whatsoever when the clutch pedal is pressed, so I don’t think it’s clutch or release bearing related.
Under load, it can also be heard in 6th gear at low RPM (around 1,200–2,000 rpm).
As soon as the revs rise above roughly 2,000 rpm, the noise disappears completely.
It doesn’t seem to be present through the rest of the rev range.
No loss of power, boost feels normal overall, and the engine otherwise runs well.
What I’ve checked
Wastegate actuator rod and linkage appear tight with no noticeable play.
Turbo itself doesn’t appear to have any obvious movement.
The noise doesn’t seem to be coming from the catalytic converter.
Visually, I can’t see an obvious crack or missing stud.
I also can’t see any obvious soot around the flange, although it’s difficult to inspect fully with everything in place.

My thoughts
At the moment I’m wondering whether it’s something like:
Header-to-turbo sealing ring vibrating or leaking slightly.
Manifold/header flange issue.
Small crack in the manifold.
Turbo support bracket.
Something else in that area resonating under certain exhaust pulses.
Before I start buying parts though, I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s had exactly this type of metallic rattle on a Mezger Turbo.
Has anyone experienced something similar, and if so, what was the culprit?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, it literally sounds like a blown gasket / so metal clicking together. Just wondered if it’s a common problem.
I was going to order a set of equal length headers and new gaskets for both ends but realize that’s an extreme measure if it’s just a crush ring etc.
I had a similar rattle on my 997. Found what I thought was the problem - one of the fixings - but it was still there afterwards. Then replaced the heat shields. Still there. The one of the PSE valves. Still there. Then Hartech found it on removing the cats, one of which sounded like a rattle off the car. Fixed.
