Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

After watching YouTube I decided I could replace my shocks. YouTubers show their shocks sliding in with little or no adjustment. Mine...not so much. When I try to jack the shock high enough where I can insert the bolt the cup at the botton of the shock hangs up on the suspension. Did you have this issue?

POST 2Original post

Anxious to see replies to this thread. I've been putting off doing this on my 2001 996. What shocks (and from where) did you end up getting? Front, rear, both?

POST 3Original post

I've done it on my 997, which shouldn't be vastly different. I don't remember major alignment problems on that lower bolt, but I had a similar problem on a BMW once. You may need a lever like a piece of wood get it lined up. Not fun when this happens, for sure. You are certain the shock is correct for the application?

POST 4Original post

I've got both shocks to this point by forcing the suspension down with a pry bar and muscle. Now I'm trying to align the holes so I can insert the bolt then connect the drop links. I spent 5 hours today trying different combinations of jacks and heights. I'm now considering a mobile mechanic just to be done with this...

POST 5Original post

I checked the Bilstien, Tire Rack , FCP Euro and all list the same PNs. It also lines up perfectly to the original shock. So looks like it's the right one.

POST 6Original post

Adjust the jack until you have the minimum load on the tapered punch and you should be able to slide the bolt in from the far side. Also leave the top nuts loose so the shock has some wiggle. There's no magic to it.
