I took it to another shop that specializes in Porsches where they swapped out the TCU with 2 other used units.

They are currently inspecting the harness going to the TCU to see if there's a bad connection somewhere but are ready to give up on this.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

About 2 years ago, my 2002 996.2 Tiptronic went to limp mode. I took it in to a reputable shop which found metal shavings in the fluid. I found a reputable Mercedes transmission repair shop (remember the Tiptronic transmissions are made by Mercedes) that rebuilt the transmission completely. I visited the shop when the transmission was completely apart and they showed me the new internal parts. While everything was out, I also had a complete top end reseal (AOS, coil packs, all gaskets, power steering lines, and a brand new LM Engineering IMS). Needless to say, I spent well over $10K on this. After the lump went back into the car, everything ran fine, EXCEPT the transmission still remained in Limp Mode. They diagnosed that there was power going into the TCU but nothing coming out. Fault codes are P1702 and P1109, as well as a "10 - Supply voltage, valves or selector lever (invalid coding). I took it to another shop that specializes in Porsches where they swapped out the TCU with 2 other used units. Unfortunately, even after they swapped out the TCUs, it still remains in limp mode. They are currently inspecting the harness going to the TCU to see if there's a bad connection somewhere but are ready to give up on this. I've been chasing this issue for 2 years now and about ready to quit. But I love this car and want to give it my best shot, though I can't justify throwing much more money at the problem. Any SoCal experts here with advice or willing to give it a shot? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

I would take it to Tony Calis or to a Porsche Dealership......They don't give up, they find/fix the problem.....

POST 3Original post

Did they remove the connector and run continuity on all the wires in the harness?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks. I reached out to Tony on Facebook Chat. After 2-3 exchanges in which I answered his questions, he stopped responding. Maybe I'll give him a call. We raced together in the POC.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So basically to run a jumper cable directly to the TCU? Seems a bit risky, but I'll ask the tech. Thanks.

POST 6Original post

It sounds like nothing a few grand and a stubborn specialist can't fix. Giving up on it would likely cost a lot more than sorting it.
