Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm interested this 996 and while I like the brown interior, the black steering wheel and other black trim pieces seem a bit out of place. Is this OEM or has this car been modified? also any other comments on the car/listing will be welcome! Listing 2002 996

POST 2Original post

Apologies if you are aware already but the factory specification is easily decoded from the build sticker (stuck to underside of bonnet and back of service booklet). If you ask the seller to provide a photo any AI can quickly retrieve the results. Optically I would say the interior looks very well specified. That leather centre console is very rare these days and almost certainly an OEM piece (whether installed at factory or retrofit). And the fact the car seems to have a leather gauge cluster surround and leather center console horseshoe supports it being a factory spec. Both are very rare options. Hope this helps

POST 3Original post

Looks like a previous owner has dialed down the amount of brown that was originally fitted. Steering wheel and centre console look to be the interlopers.

POST 4Original post

Looks better for it. Could do with a cubby in place of the tape caddy, unless you'll be breaking out the duran duran cassettes. Looks like a non sunroof too?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2826798

Yeah it seems like it, I'd probably do a center console delete, but the tape caddy looks cool. Does it have a tape deck though? I don't see it.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2826782

You mean the black center console is leather and not plastic?

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 2826805

Yep it is definitely the leather version…you can see the centre stitching line running down the middle on both the centre column behind the gearstick and the armrest/lid. This was option code XMZ as part of the Exclusive Manufaktur program and probably c. £1k by itself when new (see attached). It’s possible the interior was done two-tone this way from the factory, but as others suggested it could also be a retrofit job by someone who didn’t want so much cinnamon leather… Hard to make much of the rest of the interior without seeing more photos. Your best bet is to ask for the build sticker. Worth pointing out the market doesn’t really care for / place a premium on most cosmetic 996 options nowadays, so if it matters to you it might be a good deal

POST 9Original post

I really like that interior, it's also a really well taken photo, you can see everything you need to. This one has been tartanised and has the brown wheel, looks very cozy and inviting.

POST 10Original post

This could be boxster red, which i have in my car. Literally everything is red including steering wheel.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2826824

Wow, that looks gorgeous.

POST 13Original post

I’ve seen two-tone interiors like this before that I think were factory; but they tend to have the defroster and side vents as the alternate colour on the very few I’ve seen. As Duckonrice says, the build sticker should tell you definitively. Personally, I don’t see a problem with a modified interior. I went to great lengths to find leather wrapped consoles and vents for my car, leather airbag etc. Can’t imagine any future owner would complain that it’s not original!

POST 14Original post

The leather centre console was a very very expensive item indeed and wears alot better than the rubber covered standard item. I'm guessing there's alot more leather inside too.

POST 15Original post

Was a real period fopar on the 996 interiors how they had to stick with one colour. I think they've learnt their lesson since and just stick to seats and various colour flashes. Coloured carpets are the worst culprit, they age terribly, fade over time and look shabby in the majority of cars. Just changing out to a black one would make a huge difference. Can include black with that, i actually like a bit of colour, but black does age better overall. Red seat belts, red steering wheel marker, red tacho etc can add some accent or hounds tooth seat centres and alcantara with carbon/silver helps break things up. That tartan is superb.

POST 16Original post

I think it all boils down to the overall character of the car. the 996 was really when the 911 started to be a bit more refined, more grand tourer-like. Red seat belts in a car that has the wooden trim pack would look awful. But then you wouldn’t spec walnut in a GT3 (I’m not sure you even could). I personally think carbon fibre would look pretty hideous on a savannah interior with ruffled leather, but great on something black with sports seats. I know nephrite has its fans, but exterior colour is crucial for that to work!

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2826951

Is a car with an interior like this harder to sell?

POST 18Original post

Easier to sell to the right buyer, I would think. Rarer specs tend to fetch a premium these days from what I’ve seen* *within reason - see my previous comment about Nephrite.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2826968

Yeah, the carbon fiber accents on 996s look cheap and out of place IMO. Do you think that this interior colors would make it harder to sell?

POST 20Original post

I believe that interior is Terracotta. It will be more red than brown in real life, if that’s the case. I had it on a 987 and loved it. It seems the wheel has been switched to lesser the full terracotta experience.

POST 21Original post

Had to be specced that way, I reckon. Are they really changing the centre ‘airbag’ strip, the binnacle surround etc aftermarket as well? Either way, I quite like it personally!

POST 22Original post

Crikey if only the seller had known the commotion their car’s interior would stir up on here! Maybe they’d have set a higher asking price

POST 23Original post

I also think it’d factory - my old 986 was like this (but tan), where wheel was still black - let me find a pic

POST 24Original post

Can see it here - speakers, wheel and centre console were all black (as were door pockets). Sorry about the ***** pic - back when I owned a garage, looked after a few people’s 928s!

POST 25Original post

I’d say that came from the factory like that. I just bought a new 996 with Nephrite interior - also has elements (centre dash surround, air vents, stripe though centre) in a dark metallic grey/graphite colour? Feels a better quality finish to it than the standard black. Headlining is leather rather than alcantara and steering wheel obviously grey. Think this was a special option as seen it on a lot of cars with Nephrite or Boxster interiors. Also has 09991 as an option code which translates as Manufacture from the Exclusive-Programme

POST 26Original post

Unpainted / granite parts were standard on the earlier 996s and many Boxsters. I don’t think the soft touch paint was introduced until 2000. The granite might be a bit less ‘luxury’ but certainly ages better, since the painted bits have since turned to lottery scratch cards. Your car looks great, Benny!

POST 28Original post

There must have been an option for matt black interior trim too as my 99 is all black but seemingly scratch resistant...my centre console is leather so perhaps it was a box to tick on the options list...?

POST 29Original post

Interesting thread. I thought you might like to see my 996.2 c4 boxster red interior. Its very red, carpet, steering wheel, air vents, literally everything. Thankfully tje headlining is black alacantara.

Looks tan. You're way off "everything", not even close. Porsche even leather clad the climate control facia. Stalks Belt buckles Rear view mirror Speaker covers Inner sills Seat buttons Vent slats Cup holder Steering column Wing mirror button Fuse box cover Batwing

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 2827111

Early cars all came with a "granite" finish on the black plastic components. Sometime during the 1999 MY production run, Porsche switched to the soft touch material on all the plastic pieces. The earlier finish definitely holds up better!

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 2827126

That's called red? Interesting, looks very brown!

POST 33Original post

My Turbo is Boxster Red , in this sales video it looks very light but it's darker in reality.

POST 35Original post

Hard to know what true boxster red is these days. Mine morphed into a dirty brown colour but it was boxster red from the factory including coloured steering wheel and granite grey plastics. I colour matched the dye and paint from a piece of leather I cut off the seats that had never seen the light of day. So I would class it as real boxster red, and it is very red

POST 36Original post

I like the colour combo. Think yourself lucky it doesn't have the full on Metropole (Moody) Blue interior with steering wheel that was leftover from the 993 . The black against the terracotta/cinnamon works well, less so when you try it with Moody Blue. That said owners are easy to recognise as they usually wear one blue and one black shoe Out there colour ways are now very in vogue. Nephrite
