I live in Maryland and it gets cold but not much snow and I have a Macan I would use then.

My dealer is recommending changing my factory summer tires to winter tires on my 2027 Carrera S that is arriving in early October. I live in Maryland and it gets cold but not much snow and I have a Macan I would use then. Dealer says they go by the “+45F degree rule” saying the summer tires get hard and slippery under 45F. He says All-Season are OK but not the best in either season. So he's recommending remove the new Summer tires that factory puts on in October and putting on Winter tires . Any opinions?

Summer tires do have compound properties that make them unsuitable for cold weather usage, I read once that the tread can even crack but I’m not sure how accurate that statement was. I agree with the dealer, you’ll want all the joy you can extract from a sports car so you’ll need the summer rubber for best performance and whatever you choose for the off summer season to navigate those months.

FWIW I had to take my '91 944S2 out in the winter due to moving. Best i can recall temps were in the 20's and a bit wet. After a 350 mi trip the Pirelli P700's had cracks around all the tread blocks. That was before I even knew that was a thing with summer tires . I just knew they were crap in the cold. I was just happy to get it done without stuffing the car into a ditch.

If you need the best grip then do summer and winter tires . The compromise is the winter tire is not the best in dry winter performance wise. An all season for cold weather with little snow is a good compromise. That’s what I do. O have Michelin 4s summers and Michelin 4s -all seasons for winter. But my car is a weekend car and does not really see snow. Maybe rain and definitely cold. I am in NY. Th all seasons are pretty good.
