I have an 02
911
which I have really enjoyed. However, I recently made a dumb mistake and added fuel while the engine was running. It died and will spin over but won't start. I see no CEL displayed but am stuck. I am considering purchasing a code analyzer. Does anyone have experience with this problem or great advice on purchasing a programmer? I would love to be able to check other Vinny-
Porsche
vehicles but want a thorough machine for the
Porsche
. Thanks in advance. Roy.

That's a classic "uh-oh" moment that has humbled many of us at the pump. While fueling with the car running isn't a guaranteed recipe for disaster, it can certainly confuse the onboard systems, particularly the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system that manages fuel tank pressure. The sudden change in pressure from opening the cap can sometimes cause an electronic hiccup.
Before you invest in a scanner, there are two simple things to check. First, look at the fuse for the fuel pump; it's the most common and mercifully cheapest potential culprit. Your owner's manual will have the fuse box diagram. Second, you can try a "hard reset" by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 15-20 minutes. This forces the car’s various electronic modules to reboot and can clear transient faults. Also, when you turn the key to the 'on' position (without cranking), listen carefully for the faint whir of the fuel pump priming from the rear of the car. Silence where there should be a buzz is a strong clue.
On the subject of code scanners, you're right that the lack of a CEL doesn't mean an absence of codes. For a good, comprehensive tool that can read Porsche-specific modules (like ABS, Airbag, etc.) and not just generic engine faults, many owners find a sweet spot with tools like the Foxwell NT530 (with the Porsche software) or the iCarsoft POR series. If you plan to do more in-depth work across multiple Porsches and want what many consider the enthusiast-level gold standard, the Durametric diagnostic tool is the next logical step up, offering deeper access and some coding capabilities.
