I've spent a couple of hours checking wiring, fuses and other issues that can bring on the ABS/PSM such as brake light.

I plugged in my iCarsoft POR v2 and whilst it could read the steering angle it would not offer the steering angle reset option for a 996, 997 onwards yes but not 996.

There is a lot of conflicting info on the web about this but I can say for sure that a 996.2 c4 2003 with Bosch 5.7 ABS module can be reset with Durametric v6.6.3.8.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

From what I've understood, plugging in a reader is showing no change in values coming from the sensor.
HI all I need some assistance with my steering angle sensor stuck at 720 degree and fault code 4440 bring on the PSM and ABS light when engine is started but not moved. its a 2003 C4S. I've spent a couple of hours checking wiring, fuses and other issues that can bring on the ABS/PSM such as brake light. All ok. The back story is car off the road and garaged for 18 months battery had gone flat and now replaced. I suspect its somehow locked the SAS up and its defaulting at 720 degrees. I'm using the icarsoft CR Pro and it stays at 720 degree when wheels turned. Ive tried the hard reset with battery disconnected, then lock to lock and drive in straight line over 20mph to no avail.
switched 12v, ground and CAN HI and LOW voltages all seems in spec.
Today I've found a post on here by the previous owner who had the same problem after a long layup.

Thread '996 4S Steering angle sensor issues?'
19 Oct 2021
Afternoon all,
Apologies - got another issue with my 4s bringing out of hibernation.
Long story short.. dropped car at local garage to have steering rack and lower arms replaced.
No errors.
Turned out a new rack wasn't needed (old one got to the stage of being about half removed), when the car was put back together a steering angle sensor fault has come up.
Now, I've got them to replace the battery in case it was a low volt issue, this hasn't rectified it.
From what I've understood, plugging in a reader is showing no change in values coming from the sensor.
Only thing I cant...

Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005)
Seems he tried everything including slaving in a replacement SAS to no avail and it was eventually resolved with a recalibration.
What diagnostic tool do I need to recal? Would a Foxwell NT530 work?
I had to recalibrate mine after replacing all of the track rods/ lower arms and with quite aggressive geo set up. A Foxwell wont do it, nor will my ICARSOF. I messaged a local Porsche specialist who told me to take it down and he'd have a look for me, he re-calibrated the sensor and it has never come up again, it looked to be proper dealer level diagnostic equipment. He didnt even charge me, top guy, AHRS in Bishop Auckland.
I too had the same problem recently. I had to disconnect the steering column to repair the steering rack hard lines which had split. I clearly didn’t fix the steering wheel in the straight ahead position so once all back together it brought up the ABS/PSM warning and lights. The car did drive fine however, no random braking when cornering but clearly needed fixing.
I plugged in my iCarsoft POR v2 and whilst it could read the steering angle it would not offer the steering angle reset option for a 996, 997 onwards yes but not 996. It would however read the fault 4440 and the steering angle and as above this was reading 720 degrees and this remained constant despite turning the wheel so I assume this is a kind of lockout when it has just given up trying to measure.
I took it to one Porsche specialist who tried to reset it with his Autel but was unsuccessful. I also spoke to several specialists and was surprised how many of them told me I’d broken the clock spring. To be clear the steering angle sensor (at least on my 996.2 2003) is way down the steering column just above the footbrake and has absolutely nothing to do with the clock spring which only carries signals from the horn, tip buttons and airbag. (These were all fine on mine).
Having been quoted £160+vat for an hours diagnosis I did some man maths and worked out that this meant I could buy Durametric and a laptop for only £200 more. I was however concerned as I read a thread on Rennlist where someone stated categorically the Durametric would not reset SAS on a 996. I double checked on the Durametric website and also spoke directly to someone at Gendan who confirmed that it should work so in the end I took the plunge.
I bought an old laptop and set up Durametric Enthusiast which took maybe an hour and then plugged it in. It immediately picked up the 4440 fault code then I went into the “activations” section of the ABS 5.7 where the only option was SAS reset. I pressed this, moved the steering wheel pretty much lock to lock then back to centre and hit the “yes” button. The code was gone and I restarted the car with no warning lights and took it out for a drive. I had no ABS light and could switch the PSM on and off as I chose. All sorted in a couple of minutes!
There is a lot of conflicting info on the web about this but I can say for sure that a 996.2 c4 2003 with Bosch 5.7 ABS module can be reset with Durametric v6.6.3.8.
I’m very grateful for all the info out there that people have posted so hope to pay that forwards and help someone in the future.
