Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got back from a two week vacation and took my 1999 911 c2 cabrio to the store just to make sure the battery did t die. It started, barely, and ran a few errands. Car ran fine. I park it, and come back to the hazard flashers on but the hazard button was not pressed. I turn the car on and off wont start. I try a few times nothing. Then, this is where it starts to get weirder: the door locks in both doors start going crazy. They start pulsing on and off, hundreds of times a second. Car will still not start even though lights radio and AC still work. I figure the battery needs to be changed and I know cars can do weird things when the battery is bad. So I pop the frunk and put on a jump box just to get home. Nothing changes. So I close the hood and my son drives me to go kick up a new battery. Here I am ready to replace the battery and now the hood wont open. Stuck in the locked position and cant actuate the lever. Any ideas here?

POST 2Original post

Oh boy...here we go again. You need to locate the emergency release cable for either the frunk lid or the engine compartment lid. The front release cable is located underneath the passenger side light housing, which is nearly impossible to get without removing the light, and that you cannot do without the frunk lid open. So, search for the engine compartment release cable located under the drivers side tail light. Mask the bumper and slide a hook under the tail light in hopes that you can fish it out. A bent coat hangar works well. Once the engine compartment lid is open you can jump the car with the jumper points in the engine compartment. Then once you are into everything and working okay, do yourself a really big favor. Pop the passenger side light, locate the frunk emergency release cable and relocate it to just inside the tow hook plug. That will save you hours of frustration. Pop the tow hook plug and viola..there is the release cable. Even the manual cable levers lock and need some power to unlock...no power means they stay locked.

Got it! Thanks for the in-depth response. Looks like I have some work to do (in a store parking lot)! I didn't think the manual cable levers needed power, but that makes sense now. Appreciate the walk though.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I followed the instructions, got the hood open, replaced the battery, and now Im right back where I started. Lots of strange noises still, locks actuating on and off rapidly, hazard lights on for no reason, strange clicking noises car was acting possessed. Upon further investigation I found standing water in my drivers side back seat footwell. Im in the process of drying everything out and I removed the 15a fuse for the central locking system, which stopped the crazy electrical glitches. Going to dry it out, pull the carpeting, and see if something shorted or corroded. This all happens from some severe storms that came through while I was away on vacation, then sat there for another week. The car will still not start, frunk lid is locked up again. Any advice as to what I should check in particular once I get the seat and carpeting up?

Let me guess... this is a Cabriolet? If it is, then as Joe said... "Oh boy... here we go again" More than likely you've killed the immobilizer. It's more than like shorted... ie. TOAST. Be ready to open up your wallet, sir. To the dealership is shall by towed. Only alternative, is to send the immobilizer to ECU doctors in Florida.

POST 7Original post

ECU Doctors needs your Immobilizer, DME and your keys.

Well Joe, I think I've answered my own question. Saw that Matt posted an image of his car. I could immediately see the problem. He probably has clogged drains too. As predicted, the immobilizer is probably toast. Fun fun.

POST 9Original post

Ironic that it is sitting in front of a garage

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You guys are thorough! Top had been repaired since that photo was taken, but good eye! Drains are clear (cleaned them out when the top was repaired) but I have located the leak... it's coming from behind the side mirror switch / plastic piece and dripping into the footwell from there. The irony of the garage is not lost on me, but I have a 1972 BMW 2002 stored in there, which has now become my daily driver until I get the 996 sorted. The other spot is reserved for my wife and I was told it's non-negotiable that she keeps her car in there. Keys, ECU and Immobilizer are on order. Whoever said "open your wallet" wasn't kidding. I do appreciate the help though and thanks for the responses.

Thanks for sharing! I saw that too when I was on their site and they promote it in their "how to" videos. I'm 100% going to add that to my order. After seeing what this is going to end up costing me to repair and get back on the road, a $150 insurance policy through the housing seems like a no-brainer. Especially with my car being a cabriolet.
