I’ve done a separate HPI report which is totally clean vs the car vertical report.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
Looking at a 2003 996 turbo.
Car vertical has come back and said stolen but recovered in 2004. 22 years ago.
Car is otherwise in decent condition.
Would it put you off and what does it do to value?
Can you give more information like price and mileage to make a comparison on the market. The marker on it for having been stolen in its life will make a difference but hard to know by how much without knowing all the details. If it’s cheap then maybe it’s a good buy
22 years ago is a long time ago.
It just gives the future buyer room to haggle when it comes to resale . If you are planning to keep it, shouldn’t be worried
If it has been paid out by an insurer as a total loss stolen car in the past it’s reinsurance value may be compromised - which could mean you getting very little back on a future total loss claim or refusal to repair in economic grounds. The market is in your favour, walk away and buy a straight car
what
@jonnyspyder

insurance
write-off category (such as Cat S, N, C, or D), which permanently depresses the resale price.
Unfortunately, that will be a stigma that the car will never be able to shake off, so unless it's priced in, I'd walk away. How does the price compare to others you've been looking at?
What does the HPI report say?
I ve had 2 cars checked by car vertical and in both cases the information was incorrrect
a Macan ii bought from the first owner they said had previously had an £8000
insurance
claim, damage to a rear door and wing,
Both panels original.I could tell they had been repainted but it wasn't an £8,000 job. The owner said it was vandal scratch from when he lived in Wandsworth, having bought his previous Macan and he lived next door to an old friend I had no reason to disbelieve him

If it’s an x50 you crave then you can take that chance that it’s already reflected in the price,I’m not 100% sure it is but not having something else to compare it with makes it difficult. If you’re more than happy with a turbo in standard form you could buy a really good one that wouldn’t have any question marks against it
Thanks everyone for your replies.
HPI is clear and so I’m going ahead.
The cost at c£50k for a decent condition x50 aero kit seems right to me based on tracking every for sale ad and speaking to pretty much every dealer I could think of who may deal in these.
lol!! Original Q- car is marked as stolen, would that effect value and should I buy?
A- yes value would be negatively impacted and mostly strong advice to avoid, don’t buy…
Result- buy it anyway as car dealers who sell these cars say you should ! I think £50k for a 996 turbo is way too expensive even without an insurance claim against, the car market is mostly in free fall and you’d be lucky to get half that back from insurance in a total loss claims. The very last people to ask should u buy a particular car at an inflated price are dealers selling that type of car
You gotta be careful with these things - one of ours was 'stolen', I reported the fact to both the chocolate tea pots (Police) which is a saga and tale all its own, as a courtesy I notified the insurers - partly to get it off the insured register so that ANPR cameras would trigger should it still be wearing its correct plates.
Save to say I did NOT make a claim as the car was recovered and beside some front end damage was otherwise unscathed, imagine my surprise when the insurers marked it down as a claim - and yet I did no such thing - I still have the car and they wanted to boost the premium for it based on a non existent claim.
Ya can't make it up - try finding a police station you can walk into and an
insurance
company that doesn't hide behind 'the computer decided' BS -
For the OP I'd check the over rev counts - if they're OK the car probably is too.
Thanks Jonny.
Car not marked on HPI.
I meant I’ve spoken to a lot of dealers trying to find a good car (not to ask about values of possibly stolen cars).
Having been to see a few cars in varying conditions and price points I’m ok with my decision.
Looking forward to driving it!
