Had the
Bose
stereo in it, which I frankly didn't think sounded very good. Oh, it's better than the ASK stereo for sure. The ASK is utterly pathetic, and
Porsche
should be ashamed of themselves for including that in our cars. The
Bose
should be the base stereo system.
My first MECA comp was last Sunday, and I took first place in my class!
Kenwood
Excelon DMX958XR with a custom start up screen installed, Helix DSP.3S, D'Amore Engineering E660.5 and E350.2, Helix Ci5 25 tweets (Hertz ML280.3's wouldn't fit), Hertz Mille Legend ML700.3 mids and ML1800.3 midbasses, and a Sundown SML8 D4 in a 0.8 cuft sealed box. Rear fill is Hertz DCX100.3 coaxes running off of the deck.
Tony D'Amore was the lead engineer for Rockford Fosgate in the 00's, and has since headed out on his own. His reputation is second to none, and turns out some very, very good equipment. Much of it is under the "SMD" name, such as the SMD DD-1 and SMD Amp Dyno. But the guts of those are all his.
And I was like a lot of people when it came to Sundown Audio. I always considered them a company that made violent air manipulators, not speakers. But then I heard their stuff at a MECA show a few years ago, and wow, some of their lines truly are world class in sound quality. Absolutely best of the best.
The first time I saw a
911
, I was about 12, it was the most beautiful mechanical thing I'd ever seen, and I swore I'd have one one day. Got the kids through school, got the wife through grad school, got all of the debt including the house paid off. About a year after the house was paid off, the wife came to me and said, "Go get your car".

It took me literally 40 years, but I finally made it happen. In every single car I've ever owned, I've put a stereo in it, all the way back ton 1987 and my first car, a 72 Coupe DeVille. Well, with this 911 being my dream car, I went absolutely all out. And this car is built for utter sound quality bliss, not a big gigantic annoying f@rt cannon driving down the road. The stereo doesn't raise tempers, it raises goosebumps!
Interesting, many many years ago I was an IASCA Judge and judged the nationals in 93 and 94. I ran a car audio store in Southern California and we built some competition systems.
Figured this had all but faded out.
Back then we had a customer with an Andial RUF
Porsche
930 which we built out with an Alpine 7909 several class A amplifiers and custom door and rear package tray enclosures.
It sounded very good but was not what I considered something worthy of a sound off competition car. The imaging across the front of the car suffered.
Congratulations, well done!
Dude, that's awesome! Being in Socal back then, I guess SpeakerWorks was a huge rival! I bet that Ruf was amazing! I still have a 7909 clock on the wall in my office. I'll NEVER get rid of that thing!
I judged all the speaker works cars and yes they were impressive in the day. Although upon occasion they were subject to strange problems, the T Bird in particular...
Really fascinating times. Still wish I had my 7909. It was stolen out of my garage 20 years ago.
It could be, it’s been so many years now, I don’t recall. SpeakerWorks had 3 cars an RX7, T Bird and something else.
At one time or another I judged all 3.
But names of the people I don’t recall anymore. It was a very very long time ago.
I have a crazy memory for this stuff. The RX-7 was white, and owned by Bob Troxler. The T-Bird was gray, and owned by Todd Matsubara, and the third car you're thinking of was probably Harry Kimura's burgundy Acura Legend.
