I'm looking to upgrade my 981 Boxster and, having viewed a few cars this weekend and previously - 997.2 Carrera, 981 CGTS, 718 CGTS 2.5 & 718 Cayman T - despite being the closest to what I have, it was the 981 Cayman GTS I was most drawn to.

2 x base 2.0T, a GTS 4.0, and a GT4 RS that replaced the GT4 and I still have.

Have had 4 718 Caymans, 2 of which I ran alongside the GT4.

I later ran a base 718 2.0, then the 718 GTS 4.0 as the "winter hack" alongside the 981 GT4 for about a year.

Suggestion
By that logic, a 997.2 is just a facelifted 997.1, yet few would argue the introduction of DFI engines, PDK refinement and numerous chassis changes didn't make it a substantially different car.

Suggestion
By the time I get round to buying another Cayman it will be at least a year away and the 718 appeals as something that is both good value and no more than 10 years old which would allow you to run extended warranty for a few years.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Hi all.
I love the shape, I love the sound, I love... ok it's mainly the sound
.
Joking aside, I feel this model is analogue/raw enough to be special, modern enough to be usable and a reasonably good place to put my money.
I saw the white Ashgoods one at the weekend and in some ways I really like it, and in some ways I'm not so sure. It is a PDK which is my biggest question mark. It is also full leather interior and has gloss black exterior trim (the "GTS exterior pack" maybe?). If I'm being picky I would lean toward GTS interior and the plain black plastic trim. In some ways this example is kind of a "luxury" GTS, which may be no bad thing for me given it will be my only - but not daily - car. Condition and history were fantastic - very important to me.
I am mulling over the car but they will also buy my Boxster into stock, which frees me up to consider other options.
So a couple of asks:
What are people's general thoughts on manual vs PDK and the various spec options on the GTS? Who has what and are glad they have it? Equally who could have passed on something they have? And who misses something they don't have? What do I need to know here I suppose I am asking?
Has anyone got a GTS that they are thinking of selling? Get in touch with me. I would also consider a highly-specced S and, less so, a Boxster GTS/S
I had a 996 manual turbo and decided to look at 981's several years ago. Before buying a car thought it would be worth trying a PDK. Drove 3 in the end and got a fully loaded PDK 981 CS. Don't discount a PDK car without trying it, and make sure you use sport and manual modes.
I’ve not driven a manual 981, but owned a PDK 981S for four years and the gearbox is simply superb. Does a good job in auto of working out what you want and very smooth in traffic etc. Switch to manual and it is very responsive and a pleasure to use. I never missed having a third pedal, definitely give it a go oh and of course superb on track and less/no worries about over revs.
Thanks all. The over-rev thing is a factor for the PDK, for sure. Especially if looking at a manual from a seller who can't run a report.
The 997.2 I drove on Saturday was a PDK and left me a bit 'meh' tbh. I put it in S+ and didn't really sense any rifle bolt changes. Saying that, it was just a tentative test drive and I wasn't pushing it at all.
Am I right in thinking that the PDK in the 981 is a generation on from the 997.2?
Yes - 981 is next generation on from 997.2.
It was experiencing this that made me sell my 997.2 Carrera GTS PDK.
The car went in for services and I was lent a 981 S PDK... I couldn't believe the relative improvement in sharpness and response and gear selection.
Going back into my Carrera GTS, normal mode felt lobotomised by comparison - so then I ended up having to drive around with sport mode on all the time... and then eventually, when then the Cayman GTS was launch I changed to one of those... a much better car for me at the time.
Mine was a daily - a road weapon.
GT Silver, PDK, PTV + X73 with 18 way memory seats - I loved it. One of the first cars in the UK with PDK, PTV + X73 combo.
One of the last pics I saw of it, after I had moved it on. I had specced it de-badged but subsequent owner put the side decals back on and few other changes inside.
TDT, that looks absolutely mega. I love an understated GT Silver car. Luckily I'm not too fussed on colour - won't get yellow past the missus and ideally don't want black as you lose the contrast from the trim pieces but otherwise I'm easy.
Porsche Leeds had a Carmine Red come up with PTV but by the time I called (within 24 hours) it was reserved. I'm going to call them later to see if he/she proceeded as I'm heading to Sheffield tomorrow so could make a detour to Leeds.
There's also a GT Silver manual with PCCBs but, whilst I like the idea of them, I certainly don't need them and then there's the replacement worry.
Lot of love for the PDK it seems! Interesting.

Don't often post my thoughts on various cars but I'm an owner of a 981 BGTS PDK so figured I'd add some perspective.
Having owned many P cars ( GT & RS included ) including a 981 GT4 I have always been a fan of the 981 series.
I'm one that regularly changes my cars as I get bored very easily but now find myself over 2 years in with the 981 GTS.
All previous cars have been manual & I honestly believed I'd never go PDK until I drove my car.
On the day of purchase I also drove a manual 981 BGTS manual so was able to do an immediate comparison and make a decision.
Guess what ?
The PDK box blew me away and I immediately bought the car!
Spec wise my car is full GTS interior pack with lots of carbon & alcantara including leather dash & full climate.
I've been considering other cars such as the SRS or regular 718 Spyder but there is something about my car that makes me not want to part company.
Oh , the 981 also comes with a rather lovely sounding exhaust note too .
Good luck in whatever you decide.

Even the 981 2.7 with PSE sounds better than most cars at full chat so you can't go wrong with the GTS
Tis the reason I'm reluctant to part with my car.
Given I have the hairdressers version the noise at the higher end rev range with Sport+ on is intoxicating with the roof off.
If the 718's had the same noise I'd have one tomorrow but sadly not.

That you'll have to decide on that yourself. It's inherently personal. There will be people who absolutely love PDK. There will be others for whom manual is essential.
You could ask a question about, say, the merits of PDK in the 9x7.2 chassis and the version in the 9x1.1 chassis. There's a discussion to be had about that. But manual versus PDK is all about personal preference.
Having said all that, and to contradict myself slightly, if you're asking the question, PDK may be the answer. Die-hard manual fans tend to know who they are.

I completely understand, we've got a 981 2.7 Cayman (the wife's) and a 718 4.0 Boxster (mine). The Boxster is quantifiably better in pretty much every way except that noise from the exhaust and she knows it
Have you considered holding out for a 718 Turbo S or CGTS before committing to the 981 GTS? You’ve driven the T and the CGTS 2.5 already, so you know the platform, but I’d argue the 2.5 in full CGTS trim is where the 718 makes its real case and is worth proper consideration before you go back to the 981 family.
The 981 is a fine car but it’s old architecture now, and that shows in ways that are hard to ignore once you’ve spent time in a 718. The steering is a real weakness – the 981’s EPAS was widely considered a backward step from the 987’s hydraulic setup, losing the feel and feedback that made the older car so engaging. Porsche took a step back there and people have been making excuses for it ever since. The 718 finally addresses it properly – the EPAS has caught up in terms of feel and it comes with a quicker rack, which transforms the way the car responds and makes it a genuinely more rewarding steer than anything in the 981 range.
The 2.5 makes 365bhp and it’s a genuinely superior engine to the naturally aspirated flat-six – broader power band, more exploitable on the road, and the performance delta over the 981 is substantial rather than incremental. The flat-six gets romanticised heavily on here but on merit the turbocharged 2.5 is the better unit. More torque, more flexibility, and more fun outside of a track environment where NA top-end character matters less.
Buying back into the 981 family feels like a lateral move dressed up as an upgrade. Worth a proper back-to-back before you commit. I think you’d come away questioning whether the nostalgia for the flat-six is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
While the 981 GTS is an excellent car the poster above has summed it up exactly as I would have. For me the 718 Cayman 2.5 GTS is a brilliant car. Other than the GT4 it’s the pick of the bunch and there’s not a lot in it.
I would suggest driving a few examples before deciding.

It's the same basic architecture, yes, but describing the 718 as merely a facelift understates just how much Porsche changed.
The turbocharged engines fundamentally altered the performance characteristics, torque delivery and gearing. The chassis was extensively revised, suspension retuned, steering recalibrated, brakes upgraded, bodywork changed and the interior and infotainment modernised. Drive a 981 and a 718 back-to-back and they feel noticeably different.
By that logic, a 997.2 is just a facelifted 997.1, yet few would argue the introduction of DFI engines, PDK refinement and numerous chassis changes didn't make it a substantially different car.
Shared architecture doesn't mean the driving experience is the same.
Not a GTS but years ago I had a 2014 981 "S" which had a lot of the GTS stuff added to it at factory including the sports exhaust.
The car in standard form was fantastic, it wasn't as fast as my previous car (420PS Leon Cupra) but it was gorgeous to look at and drive, however because I like to modify cars I added the following;
1- a device to remember the settings when I turn the car off, so when you turn it on the settings are still on - things like sport mode being selected, spoiler up etc.
2- race headers - these sounded immense with the sport exhaust turned on
3- COBB engine tune, stage "2" power so about 375PS
4- COBB PDK tune - they had numerous tunes, I selected the "sequential" tune which switched the gearstick so it was forwards to go down gears and backwards to go up gears.
Loved the car, took it on a road trip to Porsche Factory and Ferrari Factory. I'm a big fan of manual cars but I would have another PDK in a heart beat with a tune on it.

Lot of love for the PDK it seems! Interesting.
I have a PDK box on my 911 - it's a very good system. I've had a fairly long list of sports cars with manual boxes, but absolutely love the PDK - it's very clever and in sports mode it's perfect. I would rather have the PDK than a manual.
The only potential iceberg is that if they go wrong (distance sensors are a thing) they are costly to replace. However, they seem pretty reliable if treated properly.

I have a 2.5S I did test drive a 981 2.7 but the poor steering and lack of power compared to the 718 made the decision easy.
I drove a 2.5 PDK car at PEC and thought it was a brilliant drive.
Again , good cars but if I were to sell my 981 I'd buy the 718 4.0
Purchased my Carmine red GTS in 2023, my first Porsche. Had various performance cars in the past, BMW M2 being the most recent, but nothing comes near my Cayman GTS.
It is a PDK and i would not want anything else.
Took the car on a Euro trip in 2024 through France, ending up at the Italian lakes.
On the way down we had a few days in Switzerland on various mountain passes. This is where this car came alive, and the exhaust noise was fantastic.
I know people could hear us coming, because at various points along the pass
where cars had stopped, they were all either filming us, or taking pics and some were even clapping as we hurtled past.
Drove sensibly, but nothing came past me, and i had great fun in overtaking a Ferrari going up the Gottard pass, and blasting past a 911 going down the
Furka pass.
My advice would be to buy one.......and go to Switzerland.

You seem far more interested in whether a post was written with AI than whether it’s actually correct.
The discussion was about 718s, not authorship. If I’ve got something wrong, say so. If not, “AI slop” is a pretty weak substitute for a counter-argument.

No, but your fixation on this is becoming a bit odd.
You’ve now posted multiple times about whether I’m a bot rather than addressing a single point that was actually made. Most people discuss the topic; you seem exclusively interested in the authorship.
If that’s the best response you’ve got, I’ll take it as an admission that you can’t find fault with the argument itself.

Thanks TJC. I love Carmine and if I was a few hours quicker off the mark I might have been the new owner of a CR Cayman with PTV! Never mind.
Done Switzerland/Gottard/Furka before in my 130i. Will definitely be something to do in a Cayman. These platforms are such a good road trip car with the two boots.

The 718 finally addresses it properly the EPAS has caught up in terms of feel and it comes with a quicker rack, which transforms the way the car responds and makes it a genuinely more rewarding steer than anything in the 981 range.
The 2.5 makes 365bhp and it s a genuinely superior engine to the naturally aspirated flat-six broader power band, more exploitable on the road, and the performance delta over the 981 is substantial rather than incremental.
I think you d come away questioning whether the nostalgia for the flat-six is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
Thanks for this. The first car I looked at was a 2.5 GTS in Crayon. My wife would love it if we got a Crayon example! I didn't drive it - in fact the only one I've driven was the 911 - but had a good look around. Walked away from that one as it wasn't quite right for me but I would certainly still consider a 2.5 for sure.
I looked at a Cayman T at Ashgoods too (I hadn't really appreciated what the T was tbh). It had an amazing interior with carbon buckets and short sift manual. Like PCCBs, I like the idea of buckets but, in reality, with how I use a car, they would arguably be too much.
Re 981 vs 718 in general, I prefer the looks of the 981 but the interior of the 718 is a step up for sure.

Not a GTS but years ago I had a 2014 981 "S" which had a lot of the GTS stuff added to it at factory including the sports exhaust.
The car in standard form was fantastic, it wasn't as fast as my previous car (420PS Leon Cupra) but it was gorgeous to look at and drive, however because I like to modify cars I added the following;
Thanks for this norseman. Impressive tune results from an NA engine! I'd happily have a very nice S for sure.
So what are the thoughts around leather vs GTS interior? I like both, just wondering if the GTS
should
have the GTS interior?
So these are the ones currently on my radar:
1) This one I have seen and heard and, I suppose, focused my mind on one of these:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202605232...
2) This one has PCCBs and the non-PASM suspension and is a manual. Private sale, been up for a few weeks:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202604291...
3) This one has just come up. Manual again but full leather:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202606042...
Interestingly, both manual cars have the MFSW. I like the idea of the functionality (one less stalk/button in a Porsche that operates the opposite to how you think it should
) but the SD wheel no doubt looks better.

The S and GTS engine wise are the same, the tune on the GTS produces more power, so when you tune a S they basically take the GTS tune and tweak it more, so you get the GTS power + a little bit more.

I’d definitely keep the 718 high on the list. The 981 has the soundtrack and arguably the prettier shape, but the 718 feels like the more complete car to me. The interior is noticeably more modern, the PCM is much improved and, on UK roads, the extra torque from the 2.5 makes it a very effortless thing to make rapid progress in.
The T is an interesting one, but I’d agree on the buckets. Fantastic to look at and great for the occasional track day, but for a car that’s going to be used properly I’d rather have the standard sports seats.
If your wife likes Crayon, that’s another point in the 718’s favour too. It just seems to suit the sharper, more modern look of the car. A well-specced 2.5 GTS in Crayon would take some beating.
Not sure it really matters which interior. I prefer Alcantara seat centres, but plenty of others will prefer leather. And I could live with either.
Just a few two penny thoughts.
Driven lots of 981, but only owned one, a GT4. Had it for 6 years and absolutely loved it. Have had 4 718 Caymans, 2 of which I ran alongside the GT4. 2 x base 2.0T, a GTS 4.0, and a GT4 RS that replaced the GT4 and I still have. The GTS 4.0 was an immensely good car, but I'd be tempted by a 981 GTS if I were to need a similar car again (and I might).
Yes, they improved the steering on the 718. Yes, the controls and interior are a bit more "finished". But the 981 is a really loveable package, and to me looks a lot better. Small details make it curvy rather than slabby, especially around the tail lights. Also, 981 door handles are a visual design masterpiece, and while 718 may look a lot more slick and finished, they are so dull in comparison.
And yes, the 718 GTS 4.0 has some more power, but you don't need it. A mate that's a half-useful driver was embarrassing 718 GT4s when he took his (I think about 90k mile old) 981 GTS out on a track day with us last year. Both have a load more than can realistically be used on the road. 981 GTS sounds a lot better than the 718 4.0 in my opinion, although they both sound good. 981 is just a bit more raw.
Out of the 5 Caymans so far, only one was PDK, and that's because it's the only flavour the GT4 RS comes in. I love PDK, especially on track, and there is no point arguing against its technical superiority, ease when using a car as a daily, and outright performance. But the manual boxes in all these cars are a tactile and sensory delight. They also add to the challenge, so for me the satisfaction, of driving the cars well. I replaced my GTS 4.0 "daily" with a new GT3 Touring just a couple of weeks ago. That's manual too, and I'm really pleased I opted for 3 pedals. Time will tell how sensible it is as a daily commuter.
Interesting aside is that of all the Porsches so far, the one that drove nicest in slow traffic was the 981 GT4, despite a heavy clutch. The GT3 Touring is probably the worst, but getting better as I run it in. The GTS 4.0 was pretty awful when new, and settled down as it got used to my driving (and maybe a bit of vice versa). The GT4 RS cheats with PDK trickery, so gets away with slow traffic pretty well. I'd wager the 981 GTS must be nice to drive in stop-start jams with either manual or PDK gearbox.
In short, I think you've chosen a great version of a great car. Not sure if there are any "bad" choices to be made, although I'd probably avoid PCCB on the basis of replacement cost at that age..
Hope that helps
Liam
^ detailed post, Liam.
A lot of fair points there, especially from someone who’s owned both generations extensively.
That said, I do think the 718 gets slightly undersold. The improvements aren’t just the steering and interior; the whole car feels a bit more polished and tied down. Porsche rarely makes a car worse generation to generation, and for me the 718 is the better driver’s car overall.
I agree the 981 is prettier. If I had one in the garage I’d happily spend time admiring it. But when actually using the thing day-to-day, the better PCM, improved cabin, sharper front end and, in the case of the 2.5 cars, that huge slab of torque make the 718 a very compelling package.
The funny thing is that most people debating 981 vs 718 are splitting hairs between two excellent cars. If someone handed me the keys to a nice 981 GTS I’d be delighted. But if I was spending my own money today, I’d still be looking hardest at a 718 GTS or 2.5 S. The newer car just feels like the more complete product.

Highly unlikely going on impossible you're getting 375hp from a 981 3.4 just with a map. You'd do well to get that with a long list of very expensive bolt ons.

Hi - PDK overrev is now disregarded by Porsche dealers since a few years ago. 911V had a great blog post about overrevs for more than a decade but even they have updated it to say PDK overrev is now disregarded for warranty, indeed their post mentions its almost impossible
https://911virgin.com/engine-revs/
The exterior pack you're referring to (gloss back exterior trim) is called the 'exterior black pack,' I have it on mine and it's quite a rare option. Really helps the car shine, although some don't love the black wheels I've grown to like them, they can always be powder coated.
Only thing I don't like about the car is the alcantara steering wheel.
981 GTS is a great car. I wanted mine as I was in love with the front 'look' and specifically wanted the sapphire blue which narrowed my options considerably, and meant I was waiting a while, but don't look past a well-optioned S. You do pay a premium for the GTS

Wasn't just a map though, I was running race headers.
And it wasn't the "Stage 1" off the shelf tune either, it was tuned for race headers and 99ron fuel etc.

Thanks Tarby. You're right, the 718 is thoroughly undersold. I also reckon the GTS 4.0 was only produced due to customer/media pressure rather than trying to make an objectively better car. Really enjoyed almost 3 years in one of them, but the turbo engines perform a lot better for everyday use, just with a different soundtrack.
Of all of them so far, objectively, the best road car, and possibly driver's car, in every way was my first. 2017 2.0 turbo base 718 Cayman with PTV, PASM, manual box and 18" wheels. I later bought a 2021 version in identical spec (and colour), and it was close, but the emissions regs had changed, and it didn't drive or sound quite as nice with particulate filters and slightly strangled low speed throttle response.
But the one I loved the most was the 981 GT4, which I bought having already owned a 718 for about 18 months. I later ran a base 718 2.0, then the 718 GTS 4.0 as the "winter hack" alongside the 981 GT4 for about a year. Used to look at them together in the workshop and think "one of you is pretty, one of you is ugly", in a slightly unkind way.
So weirdly, having owned a raft of them, either new or nearly new, for reasons of convenience and lack of time, I occasionally think about what I'll have when I retire. With a little more time on my hands, and less reason to need to phone the OPC and ask them to pick it up and service to schedule, etc... 987 R has been top of the list for a while. But more recently, 981 GTS has been in my thoughts. The Carrara White one at Ashgood fair got my pulse racing when I saw it, but I think it would need to be manual box when the time comes. I'd also prefer 2 zone climate control, but that can be strangely hit and miss, as it wasn't a cheap option.

Porsche messed up looks-wise when 981 became 982. The 982 lost the 981’s purity of design and looks awkward in so many ways.
I still sort of miss my CGTS, PDK with interior and exterior packs. Terrific car.

Thanks Liam, really helpful post.
Two quick questions, if you happen to know the answer/have an opinion:
The PCCB one I am looking at has done 20k. Are the brakes "replaceable" (if that's a word) on age or just mileage/wear?
My 981 2.7 is a manual. Do you know if the 'box in the 981 GTS is different? It is not short-shift and looks the same as it does in my car. Just wondering if there would be a different feel and in what way?
Re PCCB - even if on 20k miles be wary, if it’s been tracked, that generation of PCCB don’t last well. Look for any pitting on the disc, that’s a sure fire sign you’re in for a big bill.
I have a very highly spec’d 981 GTS with PCCB and had to deal with the front discs last year (45k miles)
The options were:
£13k from main dealer.
£5k Rebrake
£8.5k Surface Transforms
£3k Giro disc conversion (steel front and rear)
In my (modest) opinion, the weight saving of PCCB really changes the way the car drives so wanted to keep them (esp with our horrible UK roads). With that I went down Rebrake route - the car was off the road for almost 3 months as Rebrake take your discs and refurbish them, their service wasn’t great so it took longer than expected. But all done now! Very much caveat emptor, through butter experience. (At least the CGTS holds its value well!)

Sapphire works great on the GTS with the contrasting black details. Oddly at the moment, most I am looking at have the exterior pack.

Think the Ashgood one might have sold. It really was a nice example, great condition from my fairly brief look.
I’d ideally prefer 2-zone climate, it’s one of the options - as opposed to PDK vs manual, gloss vs unpainted, etc - that is just categorically better to have. Saying that, I have it on mine, and I would sacrifice it for the right car.

I know what you mean and I tend to agree. I’d not walk past a leather car if everything else was right though.
My car will tick over 60k on my way home later so hopefully won’t be less attractive to buyers who want sub-60k!! Means I may as well hold fire for the right one now though!
Talking of mine, the economy is amazing on a run:
A good friend had a 981 GTS PDK for a couple of years after a 996 Carrera. He did lots of touring in it as well as Sunday morning blasts as a 2nd car. The GTS was highly competent and another friend had a manual one for 12 months. They have both moved on (one to a 981 Spyder and the other to a GT4 before a 981 Boxster GTS). They both agreed that the 6 cylinder version was more engaging and it has been compared to the analogue vs digital era techwise.
The only reason the friend who had the PDK car sold it was because he wanted a convertible and decided to go for a Spyder instead and had the money to trade up before the prices really moved up on 981 Spyders. Friends with 981 GT4s think the GTS with it's sports exhaust in full angry mode is a better road car (including the noise) than a GT4 of the same era.
If you are looking for a car to keep that will hold its value better, I think the 981 is the better car albeit yes, it isn't quite as fancy inside as a 718 but if you're buying a driver's car, it's about the feel and wringing out a 6 cylinder is better than a 4 pot turbo IMO (I've had various modified 996s). The friend who had the PDK car reckoned it was on point and you'd never miss a gear and it's easier to drive fast with the paddles in sport plus mode.
PS the GTS interior with the alcantara suits the car as the alcantara is more grippy in spirited driving than full leather IMO

Did an hour drive in my carmine BGTS PDK today and still looked back at it when I got out of the car .
The PCM is rubbish by modern standards but that matters not as I just listen to the cars engine is sport or sport plus mode.
Often look at what I'd buy now but it's such a lovely car to drive and live with .
Not quite ticked over 29k miles still feels factory fresh .
PDK box is sublime.

A 2.5 GTS is definitely still on the radar. As an only-car, the more laid-back power delivery would arguably work better and just things like Apple CarPlay make things so much more liveable day-to-day. These are sacrifices I'm willing to make though for the 981 and the deciding factor will probably be what car feels right at the time, based on spec, condition, colour, history, etc, etc.
Re the T, I do actually like the standard pin-striped seats too but, if I go 4cyl, I think it will be the 2.5.

And it is, of course, the same architecture as the 718/982, which is a mid-cycle facelift of the 981, not a new car.
And again. Are you a bot
No, but your fixation on this is becoming a bit odd.
You ve now posted multiple times about whether I m a bot rather than addressing a single point that was actually made. Most people discuss the topic; you seem exclusively interested in the authorship.
If that s the best response you ve got, I ll take it as an admission that you can t find fault with the argument itself.
Best response to what? I repeat I have no interest in the content.
So it was a1 written ? Like the ridiculous picture in the coupe thread was.
I have no interest in the post content just the authorship. Ai slop should clearly be marked as such for transparency, not that it isn't obvious. Using ai to write responses and not making it clear is likely to mislead, has the danger of giving people poor advice, and is simply weird. I'm calling that out.
Interesting reading on this thread. I found myself looking for a stop gap car when waiting for a new one to arrive. As this would be a temporary buy I ended up looking at the 981 (hoping to minimise the depreciation). That was my first mistake. I now think the temporary might end up being permanent. The 981 GTS is just stunning. I use it as a daily and I love it. The engine, sound, feel, analogue simplicity. It has given me things I didn’t know I needed.
I ended up with a 2015 GTS PDK, white with black pack. Due to space limitations I may have to let it go, but hoping not to.

Also don't think that the GTS interior package is the be all and end all. Personally I'm not a lover of carbon fibre or the grey rev counter dial and the contrast stitching can be added as an option from factory.
If the car ticks at least 99% of your wants then buy it. You need to be realistic when looking for your perfect spec otherwise you may well be waiting a very very long time.

The 981 is such a lovely car especially in GTS form .
I have the hairdressers version :-)
Still here chaps, still looking...
I drove the Agate manual at Cridfords. Amazing thing, especially the auto-blip downshifts with the manual box - so smooth! For some reason it just didn't grab me enough though, maybe the colour, not sure. Logically it is exactly what I'm after.
So the two cars on my radar at the moment are these (neither of which is a 981 GTS
).
997.2 Carrera -

Love the size and shape of this gen and the manual .2 seems quite a rare beast. Big gap in service history though (time rather than mileage). Not a million miles from me so am looking to go and see it when possible.
718 GTS -

This has been for sale for quite a while which seems a bit odd. It was definitely up when I started this thread but wasn't really on my radar as I thought it was white. Turns out it is Crayon! Doesn't have climate, MFSW, extended leather or (I think) Bose, but I am quite intrigued by it. Not sure what the green key is all about!
Owners quite high and no SH details in add, grrr. Classic AI-ad which we are seeing more and more of nowadays. It does tell me that it "features a stylish brushed aluminium gear lever" but absolutely nothing about the history! Anyway, I'm in touch with dealer and awaiting further details.

White is far from my favourite car colour but it definitely works on the Cayman, especially the GTS with lots of contrasting black trim.
Edit: and wheels!

Ooh it actually sounds quite appealing when put like that!
What do you drive? Oh, just a Porsche Turbo S

I totally agree. I originally walked away from this car because I am not a fan of white. My only other white car was also my first - a 1990 Ford Escort 1.4 LX. But once I took the Cayman on a test drive, that was it. Easiest sale ever made!
Now that I have it, I love the colour with the black exterior pack and black wheels (another thing I would have avoided before this). The combo really works on the Cayman.

So talk to me about PDK then...

My 981 BGTS was my first PDK car having only ever owned manuals.
Still so pleased I switched its amazing and fast even on the 981 cars.
For what it’s worth I tried out a 981 GTS then went to the Porsche experience centre at Silverstone to try a 718 2,5S back to back with a GTS 4.0. Out of the 3 I felt that the.981 was the most exciting but in the end I stuck with a Lotus Evora Sport 410 as it was felt more special and I was only looking for a ‘weekend toy’. If it had been after a daily driver and occasional track day car I think the 2,5S would have got the nod. It was more lairy on track compared to the GTS 4.0 and not a lot slower due to max torque being available much sooner in the rev range. Plus they seem good value compared to the 4.0 engine with its long gearing.

Interesting. By the time I get round to buying another Cayman it will be at least a year away and the 718 appeals as something that is both good value and no more than 10 years old which would allow you to run extended warranty for a few years. I haven't driven a 718 for several years now - I know the S is plenty fast enough as a road car, maybe even more than enough.
9WERKS TV 718 Boxster vs 718 Boxster S comparison here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgr5bmyokSM
I doubt I'll have GTS 4.0 or even 981 GTS budget, but would be cross shopping with 981 S perhaps. 718 base and S, and even GTS 2.5 do seem great value.
It’s a laughable line in a car ad isn’t it. Aside from that what do we think? No 18-way and no climate control but I like it otherwise and 2 year (?) warranty.

Been living in Scotland for some time - any issues with corrosion?
And them intake trim pieces would have to go.
Sad times. I have a new car arriving soon and therefore reluctantly I need to let go of the Cayman GTS. I love this thing, and I did not expect to. I only got it a a temp car awaiting a new order.
It is the most fun I have had in a car, but I simply can not store it where I live and need to let it go. It drives brilliantly, sounds amazing and handles like nothing I have ever driven. If I could, I would happily keep it... and I suspect that in future years I will go hunting for another 981 GTS again.
