I got the Helix as Halfords had it on offer, and I wanted to try 5w40 as people often recommend moving to that grade if the engine has a few miles on it, I also read a few good reviews and lastly its got the all important porsche A40 certification so I can't see it doing any harm!

My car has done 197,000KM (122,000ish mile), for the 2 years I've owned my car I've used Mobil1 5W-40 and I don't have anything to complain about.

quite interesting, particulaly if you have M96/97 engine, its American but thought the comments on the different types of Mobil 1 very relevant to us here in the UK and the comments on bore washdown quite important, For the Mezger Engines it would be slighty different given the different liner but still relevant and reinforces what I have done for years with all Porsche Engine a) always run on Premium fuel b) once a year run some injector Cleaner c) Always change the OIl before layup d) get it warmed up as quick as possible without ragging it then use it as it was designed dont treat it with kid gloves
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I only use my car on the road so any full boost runs are only a couple of gears at a time, then back to slow driving so I know I won't be getting high oil temps like you will with sustained boost on track for example.

I feel for my use case the thicker oil is not necessary for general engine protection so it's not worth putting the extra load on the cam adjustment system.

I could be wrong on this but I used the fs because I think I read the additive package suits our cars better, I think the esp is for newer cars particularly those with particle filters and direct injection and has less of the old school additives.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What engine oil are we using in our 996 turbos?
My driving is road only. Some spirited drives, but the bulk is driving in and out of traffic.
Car has just over 70k on the clock and the turbos have just been replaced.
Also; a Nine Excellence map.

Mines similar mileage to yours and has only had mobil 1 0w-40 so far, I've just put Shell Helix 5w-40 in it, not driven it yet but will be interesting to see if I can notice a difference. Both have the A40 Porsche approval.
Thanks for that.
When you was using Mobil 1, was it the FS:
https://www.mobil.co.uk/en-gb/engine-oil/mobil-1/car/mobil-1-fs-0w-40
Or the ESP:
Mobil 1™ ESP X4 0W-40 | Mobil UK
Mobil 1™ ESP x4 0W-40 is an advanced full synthetic engine oil specifically designed to provide outstanding performance for high powered engines, providing outstanding engine cleanliness, wear protection, strong durability and advanced fuel economy.

If it makes any difference, I only use unleaded super in the tank.
What made you go for the Shell Helix?
I could be wrong on this but I used the fs because I think I read the additive package suits our cars better, I think the esp is for newer cars particularly those with particle filters and direct injection and has less of the old school additives.
I used to get the mobil 1 from Costco but they seem to have stopped selling it, as have Halfords, it has also got a lot more expensive.
I got the Helix as Halfords had it on offer, and I wanted to try 5w40 as people often recommend moving to that grade if the engine has a few miles on it, I also read a few good reviews and lastly its got the all important porsche A40 certification so I can't see it doing any harm!
Thanks Mac
Since having the turbos done, it seems to have developed a leak so in spite of only doing a couple of hundred miles, I want some oil to keep it topped up until it can goes for its annual service (2 weeks time) when the leak will be addressed.
I might look at Opie Oils and see their recommendation.
I've thought about 5w50 and decided against it. Here's my reasoning.
I only use my car on the road so any full boost runs are only a couple of gears at a time, then back to slow driving so I know I won't be getting high oil temps like you will with sustained boost on track for example.
Also thicker oil increases oil pressure and I know the variable valve timing system can fail on the 996t engine, especially the oil ring system on the end of the camshafts. I feel for my use case the thicker oil is not necessary for general engine protection so it's not worth putting the extra load on the cam adjustment system.
Ps there is a guy in the states who got his 996t to I think over 350k miles on mobile 1 0w40!
Ps this is just my opinion though!
On both my 993c2 and 996 T Ive been using fuchs 5w40 for 20 or so years.
I did try mobil 0w40 on both and found the engines to be rattly and any small sweaty oil patches, turned into small seeps.
Ive done tens of thousands of miles on trackdays, Nurburgring and general road driving and much preferred the 5w40 oil.
Mobil 0w 40, I don't like the stuff, my Porsche specialist doesn't like the stuff.(He's a ace mechanic, with 25 years plus Porsche experience) Mezgers were designed long before Mobil 0w40 existed, I was told. IMHO
And I also believe that oil tech has moved on since the cars were new, and the impact of 70k on the clock will make a difference too.
This is exactly the kind of predicament I hate being in because I know I’m not satisfied till I’ve read and watched a mountain of content in this and it’s very easy to end up down rabbit holes!
Plan A: determine the best oil for the application
Plan B: go Mobil 1 FS
Hopefully, plan A will default to plan B.
My car has done 197,000KM (122,000ish mile), for the 2 years I've owned my car I've used Mobil1 5W-40 and I don't have anything to complain about.
However, given the high mileage and the increased usage since I change jobs, I'm thinking about heeding Porsche's advice next year and changing to 5W-50
"What advantages does the 5W-50 offer the Porsche 911 (type 996) and Boxster (type 986)?
The engine oils available when the 996 and 986 models were launched were optimally developed by the engine and oil engineers for the engine technology of the time. Over the years, Porsche engines have constantly evolved, and at the same time the engine oils have also had to be adapted. As a result, the difference between the engine oil and the 996 and 986 engines has become greater over the years. The oil used back in 1996/1997 is no longer available on the market today. Our Porsche Classic Motoroil comes very close to the oils developed at the time and their engine technology. In addition, in connection with today's usual vehicle use, the higher mileage and the ageing sealing materials, our engine oils have been adapted and additives have been added accordingly."
