I must also add that these tips also changed the note just a little bit more.

I used Exhaust World in North Melbourne simply because they have done a number of Gundo modifications.

Does the muffler gundo / fisther hack help the motor breath any better, Or is it only sound, That benifits from the change , Been to busy enjoying the car but now winter is on the way its time to do something, I only ask as my car is stock and the motor sounds like it can not breath @ at around the 6 k mark just wondering if the hack is enough?

I went another route after my PSE valves malfunctioned; rather than replacing the factory mufflers with PSE through Porsche at 2k each, I had both mufflers opened up and 'high flowed'.

I am considering hacking my mufflers to get a little more sound for my 996 3.6L Coupe. Any feedback or comments? Recommendations for an exhaust shop in SE Melbourne area?
Thanks in advance.
H
I did my 996 3.4 last year, simply the best $380 mod I’ve ever done. Absolutely no drone, great low bass rumble on idle and a howl after 4000 rpm... now my Porsche sounds like a Porsche.
I used Exhaust World in North Melbourne simply because they have done a number of Gundo modifications.
OK, questions as to exactly how this is done, and what configuration for the pipe. The photo above looks pretty straight forward, and appears to be just a short, straight section in between the exhaust in and out pipes, whereas others I've seen appear to be longer, curved sections per this photo. Any comparison between the 2 sound & drone wise? The one shown above looks to be much simpler to do, and I can probably get done at the engineering business I work at as we do a fair bit of stainless stuff...
cheers
Peter
Sound can vary with the size of the bypass pipe of the piece that bridges the inlet and outlet that has been curved for ease of welding ......I just ran a short piece in between like the very top image in post 1 from memory I went 1 inch and 3/4 dia , this gives a very sporty flay six howl ,,,some go as large as 2.5 inch entirely up to you how large you go ...
So this will be the first mod to my 996.2 that i will do, has anyone used a 2" pipe and got any feedback on sound, too loud, too droney etc? Or do i just use 1.75" pipe like most people have done?

Tingy,
At about the 1 minute 50 second mark of the above video, discussion centres around the size of the bypass pipe.
Thanks mate, i have been watching all i can and doing my homework on the best way to do this. I think i have decided what i will be doing now, have you done this George?
Im intrested in doing this mod also but really want to hear a car from the inside if its loud or if droning is an issue, anyone got experience with this?
As noted before in the thread, I'll be looking to do this too. Just need to clean all the woodworking and other sh*t out of the garage into my new workshop which is 95% finished, and sell the 987, so I can move my car back into the garage and work on it....
I did a PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust) hack on my 996 C4S. Its different than the Gundo Hack.
Made a significant difference to the sound, no drone & not too load as to be obnoxious. Just took pics of what I wanted to the local exhaust guy (Tough Muff, funny yes) and less than $300 for both. I removed & fitted.
Just Google it
So it sounds like the Gundo hack is not as loud as the PSE hack, can anyone verify this? Or is it the other way around?
I am just after a bit more note not obnoxiously loud.
Just got my 996.2 done at
Exhaust World in North Melbourne. They seem to be a good honest shop and my car now sounds like it should have. They have plenty of experience with this mod and one of the guys in the shop owns a 964.
Thanks for the recommendation FUCHer.
I got them to use a 1.5" pipe. This was based on the videos from the carwow guy on youtube. The guys at exhaust world also recommended this size.
There are plenty of videos on youtube with various sized pipes being used.
There is no droning. It has a nice rumble at idle and is louder above ~3,000rpm. When below ~3,000rpm there isn't much of a difference in the cabin with the windows up or down.
I'd Just do the gundo and you will be happy. Its not overly loud and provides a great note. Then, if money allows get yourself some 200 cell sports cats. (Fabspeed, AWE etc)
Job done!
I went another route after my PSE valves malfunctioned; rather than replacing the factory mufflers with PSE through Porsche at 2k each, I had both mufflers opened up and 'high flowed'.
So for the last year I've been running X51 extractors and AWE cats with this set up. Above 4k is quite aggressive/loud and under 4k around town it's deep and burbley. I'll admit, its a little obnoxious but fun for now. At some point I'll want to make it a bit quieter and refined.
😄
Better late than never,
Yes Tingy, 1.5 inch bypass pipe welded in a little after our run with Caver west of Sydney. During our run, car a little muted anything north of 4k revs. Kept having to crane my head sideways to hear where I was at tachometer wise if you get my drift. Gundo well and truly fixed that.
Hi Guys,
I'm booked in at Exhaust World next week after reading through the responses.
Thanks for the recommendation as I didnt have anyone in melb that come recommended.
Cheers
Tips, took my mufflers to a guy in Penrith. Don't have his contact details but if you get in touch with the Zag brothers (Porsche craftsmen George and John) in Kingswood (adjacent suburb to Penrith), they'll put you in touch.
Reasonably priced, great job, just don't expect him to pick up the phone too often. His work is quite sought after.
Did them myself mate, If I had time and a couple more bits of equipment I would offer my services
I also got new tips for my car a few months ago, I bought some Dansk tips from Heritage in the UK.
I must also add that these tips also changed the note just a little bit more.
This is a side by side shot of the old tips and the new
This is a pic of my Gundo installed
I got the less aggressive fister exhaust done on my 996.2 at Even Engineering in Dandenong. Barely different when idling but a pleasant rumble under power.
Just picked up the car from Exhaust World late this morning after having the Gundo hack done...
OMFG it sounds AMAZING!!
Highly recommend it and I cant say enough about the guys there.
It was already done when I got my car, and at least for me it is the perfect exhaust for a 996. All of the after market systems I have heard are far too loud and drone on the highway. Gundo gives a nice note when you aren't on it, but it won't bother the neighbours and is fine for a road trip, but when you get on it, it sounds fantastic. No reason not to do it.
thanks
@targa george
. I spoke to John at Zag, he put me in touch with Dave at Penrith Exhaust, lovely guy very helpful. I loved his response to my question "I believe you may have done a few gundo hacks", his response: "yeah you could say that!!" I could hear the laughter in his voice......
😀
Once I get the mufflers off after new years ill drop them up as it only takes a day to do, and very reasonable vs the Autohaus quote at $1,100 which certainly has some saving you the DIY tax in it.
its a pity
@MFX
has his done already, could have used a 'how to' video on removing the mufflers, as I don't need a
@TINGY996
experience of dropping a spanner on my head
😮
All i paid was my time
That's taking the piss surely. I guess everyone wants a piece of the pie, maybe I should get in on this gig because I sure as shit could do it way cheaper than that.
For those residing in Adelaide, I had my original stock 996.2 mufflers (still new and unused) modified by
Dr Dabz fab lab
over in Enfield.
Jarrod does a lot of custom welding and I just happened to stumble on his work earlier this year when I found his Facebook page highlighting pics of his work.
From memory he charged me around $300 for both mufflers to be modified, so reasonably cheap for some high quality workmanship.
Dave at Penrith city exhaust did my fister D mod some 5 years ago he does a good job and is priced well .

For those in Melb.
I looked at Preston Mr Muffler, but they get a 3rd party in to do job. Can't remember price, but surely marked up.
Called Exhaust World, but they wanted whole car as have previously had clearance issues with bumper after mod. My car was out of action as in the middle of AOS replacement.
Found a thread somewhere on forum here that mentioned Rowville Exhausts that do all custom exhaust systems etc.
Owner said "A Gundo what!" Showed him a video and mufflers. No worries. Quick turn around, a bit of 1 3/4" offcut and $200 later job done.
Only takes 30min or less to remove mufflers yourself. Don't even need to remove bumper.
I could be wrong (hope i am ) But the hack should have been done before the tail pipe join. It will still work ok, just won't be able to change your tips.
So after a few weeks with the gundo and maybe against the grain here but not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Did a run to palm beach on Sunday morning taking it through different rev ranges. 1-3k rpm it sounds like hole in the muffler and at 3500 up great.
For a daily j
ust finding it a bit loud for local cruising and lower revs, mrs also hates it.
I am seriously considering reversing it whilst look out for a set of sports mufflers to put on instead.
being a 6.1 the direction appears to be the shorter pipe vs the 6.2 looks to be the longer fister option from the blank on the muffler that only cuts out 2 of the 3 baffles rather than all 3. Has anyone tried the fister option on the 6.1 muffler?
I haven’t experienced the gundo exhaust, so can’t answer that sorry. But I went from stock to the Cargraphic Sound exhaust and can recommend it if you’re after something that’s subdued at low revs but opens up to a very nice, but not over the top growl as the revs go past 4k. I’m very happy with it. In combination with the orange cap/silicone hose/resonator delete mod and a BMC f1 panel filter, it completely altered the character of the car, but still civilized for pootling. Bonus is Cargraphic claims an extra 15ps and a significant weight saving over original. If this is up your alley think @dan189 is still selling Cargraphic in Aus.
yep cargraphic was the preferred muffler from feedback. just pricing atm so might reach out to dan189. If any PFA'er in Sydney has cargraphic on a 3.4 - 6.1 I would be keen to catch up one morning for coffee to hear it
That’s disappointing
@Tips
. There’s must obviously be a few different ways this gets done... I couldn’t tell you what “version” of gundo/fister/whatever I ended up with tbh but the outcome seems quite different, even given room for the fact it’s obviously a subjective thing!
yep it was the way he could get it to work. i should have just taken the tips off first so there was no confusion. will take them back next week to be redone.
was also my thought. I am catching up with
@JWM
on Sat for coffee and sound comparison. I am also keen to hear wat the fister sounds like in a 996if anyone with one is around the hills district early Sat morning for a sound check and coffee.......
After some scrambling under the car and comparison test drives,
@Tips
confirmed my car has the
Fister mod
, versus his Gundo. Big, big difference. I was thinking on the drive home mine is probably louder in the car when you have the windows up than down like we had them but either way, huge difference!
Great to chat and thanks for the coffee!
btw, my gear change felt like rowing a boat on the drive home after using your short shifter... I'll need to investigate that I think...
😁
Really appreciate you taking the time to catch up
@JWM
it was really helpful to drive your car with some of the items sorted that I am looking to do. That stance is epic love the ride height and quite a difference with the cars parked along side each other.
called Dave at Penrith in the way home and he will have the mufflers On Wednesday to reverse the gundo and do the fister bypass, certainly more the sound I was chasing.
I knew the gearshift was tight and short but didn’t realise how much until I drove yours.
I’ll look to organise that 996 Sydney area catch up soon, maybe a run to trading post near Wollombi for the northerners
Going to try and get the gundo done this week at Exhaust World.
Anyone know how long it takes to get done? Feels like a 60min job to me - trying to work out logistics.
EDIT: Booked in for this week. Anything I should be requesting? 1.5 pipes feels the right balance. Does anyone have the short and sweet?
Got the Gundo Hack done through Exhaust World in Nth Melbourne. Dropped it in at 8am, done an hour later.
Wow! What a difference it makes; sounds like a Porsche now.
We should have taken some GoPro's and made a comparison YouTube
@Tips
!
😂
Huge difference... Fister is more like a stock exhaust with a little more note... Gundo was significantly louder and a different kind of sound. Ideal world you'd want both on a switch I reckon!
Forgive my ignorance, but I thought they were both the same?
Is one where the two pipes are joined and the other a new pipe is plumbed into the top 'spare' spot on the muffler into the out pipe?
Has anyone in Sydney done the Gundo hack on a 3.4? Would definitely be interested in hearing the improvement! Out of interest, is the Fister hack even possible on the 3.4?
Yes did gundo and it’s the more aggressive sound so,swapped to the fister based on the comparison with
@JWM
la lot quieter and achieves the right note between 4-6k rpm. Bothe of our cars are 3.4 966.1.
Definite difference. I refittedthe mufflers yesterday with the fister mod now done. Less aggressive slightly louder than stock at idle and comes in at 4000 rather than all through the rev range with the gundo. Much better sound for me as a daily just felt the gundo sound under 3500 was too much like a leaky exhaust vs sports sound.
Starting to think about an exhaust mod for my 996, and from this and other threads think the Fister is the best type for my needs.
@Ozwin
- any feedback on yours since you had the Fister installed?
@jordan
- how have you found the sound of the Gundo now that you have been driving it around for a while now?
Cheers

Just had the Gundo done to my 997S. Danny at Exhaust World in North Melbourne were great 5 stars.
I even have a bit of pop and crackle on downshifts
Would recommend.
Are you sure that is correct? I though FD Motor sports "created" the Fister hack and here is an image of the 996.1 exhaust mod which is connecting the two pipes together...
https://fdmotorsports.net/shop/ols/products/fister-996-34-sport-exhaust-modification
Happy to be corrected....

Well that makes sense as the guy who thought of the moderfaction is Darren Fister, I have seen so many hack jobys were that has been called the Gundo, Bloody wrong again
I hope no mufflers are confused because of this error.
Both these mods were actually being done by 996 owners before they became known as the 'Gundo' or the 'Fister' hack/mods.
I recall when I first landed my 996 in late 2003 (I had the PSE fitted) many owners were trying to emulate the sound of the PSE without spending the extra $$$.
These mods were being carried out all the way back in 2004 by various people in their own workshops before they became known as Gundo & Fister hack/mods in latter years.
A US forum member known by the name Gundo popularised the bypass hack with the pipe coming out of the blanking plate then connecting to the muffler's input pipe.
The so called Fister mod is the one shown in the pics above - This gives the exhaust note a more louder/aggressive tone over the Gundo.
Many people confuse the two and it becomes almost impossible to work out which one someone is talking about unless they can actually post a pic of their mufflers to confirm.
Gundo and Fister cannot claim to have been the first - they just popularised it..
I have had the PSE fitted since day 1 - I'm wanting to try out the Fister mod at some stage. I do have my original mufflers from when my car was delivered and I had these modded a while back. Just need to pull my finger out and fit these to compare to the factory PSE.
Hi Guys,
Have recently bought a 3.4 manual Carrera 98 and am looking to do the fister hack. From my reading, this is the small welded in piece (bridge) between the inlet and outlet pipes, as opposed to the extra pipe that is plumbed from the actual muffler box into the outlet pipe.
I bought the care from Autohaus in August '23 and receipts show the prior owner had asked PR Tech to remove some internal baffles. This means it's just a louder version of a standard exhaust, and does not offer that hotter / sharper tone that seems to come from the Fister.
Does anybody have a set of 3.4 mufflers either with, or without the Fister hack that are surplus to requirements? I would be interested in buying a set so as to change out what I have.
I'm located in Sydney, near Balmain.
cheers,
I don’t have a set of mufflers but did both fista and gundo hack on my old 996. The bridge pipe between the inlet and out let I found personally too loud sounded like a hole in a muffler. Had it reversed and a new pipe from the blanked off section to outlet put in, much better sound. Reasonably stock at idle a more snarl under revs.
dave at Penrith mufflers was the recommended guy in Sydney.
