As it stands it has cost me £69k including the new engine fitted with a 2 year warranty on the new engine from Porsche....which has now expired.

Noisy - when it's closed there is no more noise than on a coupe.
Seen a couple of these lately and look to be lovely cars versus later generations.
Did get me thinking about stretching the budget and looking into the rwd variant.
Not many for sale and values seem to be a bit all over the place with the usual plethora of VERY high owner cars?
Most cars seem to be PDK - assuming this works well what other spec is deemed attractive?
The threads I have seen over the usual forums suggest these are great cars but haven’t spotted much recent chat on here.
To those in ‘the know’ what cars look attractive at the moment? Dare I ask on the subject of future residuals?!
I bought one a few years ago, rear seat, CL’s and PCCB’s.
I should have just bought a 987GT3 and had done with it, It was a PDK and I hated driving it, it was like a very Old 2.8 Granada Ghia gearbox that my dad has when I was a kid, it seemed to always hunting for gears but never actually happy in any of them ? It was fine on Mtwy driving and dual carriageways A Roads Etc but when the Dales called on a Sunday morning there it was in 4th when I wanted to be in 3rd, it seemed to like 5th and I didn’t, it must have been an emissions thing ! In the end and after a short spell I managed to sell it on at a profit as I’d pretended it was that good.
I bought a C4S Manual for high days and holidays and the Mrs ended up with a Biturbo Tiguan which is a cracking car ! If it’s a main car then an Auto might suit, if it’s a toy then for me if I was thinking about flicking an auto box I’d might as well change gear properly, apart from the early PDK the car was a belter and had a ton of extras on top of an already well specced set up.
Lots of love here. Had mine 6.5 years and going strong. Suggest spec/config is important (cab/coupe/4WD/RWD/PDK/Manual. Mines a RWD manual coupe with CLs and I still love it.
Does seem to divide opinion though and many threads on here about whether they’re good value or not. This thread has both ends of the spectrum and the second thread gives some comparison views. You pays your money.....

Bought a 997.2 C4 GTS mid Covid, cracking piece of kit with PDK and the power kit, Sport Chrono and PSE, handles beautifully and is great both cross country on B roads and cross borders, already been to France in it.
Just make sure you get the signature leather and alcantara interior.
Bought my high spec manual at 6 months old and still in love with it. Driven stacks of newer flappy paddle stuff (and a Taycan Turbo S last week), but nothing gives me the same analogue thrill. It's a keeper..............there's no more to say!
If you’re worried about residuals, then just mitigate this by getting yourself into an S. Less outlay, you’ll still love it and you won’t be worrying about putting miles on it.
I’ve had mine 4 1/2 years and love it. Manual RWD Coupe. There’s a common theme here!
There were something like 100 manual and 200 PDK cars but PDK’s always outnumber Manual’s on the used car market by I would say a ratio of 10:1. A manual priced around £60k with sensible mileage and good spec would sell in days.
I think the reason these cars in manual form sell so well is that manual gearbox in combination with the X51 power kit engine is a wonderful thing. Combine that with the fantastic hydraulic steering and a a gearbox with the short shift kit and you have a car that on factory suspension is just a joy to drive down a British country road.
For the last twenty years the one thing that dates cars more than others is the gearbox (apart from SatNav but that can be sorted with your phone)....PDK in a 997 is now two generations old and probably bettered by units in some of the cars people drive daily.
RWD
Manual
Coupe
Alcantara/Leather Interior
Bose
CL’s
That’s the spec that is most in demand.
Manual is fab, but for day to day the PDK on the GTS works pretty well and is easy to live with.
It definitely frustrated me initially but I've adapted my driving style to it and it works pretty well in Sports Plus for the odd track day too.
I wouldn't want a manual for daily use now.....GTS has 104k miles now (new engine @87k!) and comes into its own in our crappy weather....epic in snow on snow tyres.

Why the new engine as a matter of interest..? They’re supposed to be bulletproof!
OP: they’re the most evolved and desirable 997 for ‘sensible’ money so lots of love for them. Also relatively rare and only made at the end of the line.
Mines PDK 2wd high spec with full extended leather.
Great package if expensive now for an ageing car but still desirable to own and good powerkit engine with wide body delivers old school 911 reasonably rapid driving thrills
Originality is key to the best cars to own and rare manuals command the best prices.
Whilst centrelocks can be a pain cars with non standard centrelocks are worth less.
Great last of the line neutral hydraulic steering perfect weighting especially on 2wd cars which as usual for a 911 give the best combination of handling power delivery less weight and better economy with less transmission noise too. 4wd cars worth less ££.
Having owned a Carrera T from new until recently you could argue this 2018 car at top £60ks gives better value than an 8 year old GTS as they have similar traits. The engine being turbo charged is less convincing than the 408bhp GTS na unit but if you can live with this the Carrera T is a great modern alternative at similar money and could become as collectable in time given similar low build numbers.
Yes mine has super high spec also with the leather dash, alcantara headliner and leather/alcantara seats and door inserts. Very nice place to be.
No centre locks thank goodness as much easier to swap wheels over without the mega torque wrench.
The car was a one owner 4 years old with high miles when I bought it, with a full OPC history.
Original owner did a daily commute from Birmingham to London, hence the high miles......meaning it had had 2 oil changes in 80 odd k miles....seems to be the reason the engine became a box of bits.
No finger pointing here...the car had been serviced as to manufacturer guidance....
I have always stuck to annual services and oil changes no matter the mileage or make of car for that matter...
Anyway now have a car with a low mileage engine which will remain in the stable for the foreseeable future.
As it stands it has cost me £69k including the new engine fitted with a 2 year warranty on the new engine from Porsche....which has now expired.
With the benefit of hindsight I could have bought a nice low miler for the money BUT probably wouldn't have driven it so much....
It's very liberating having a high mileage car that you're not afraid to "devalue".
Carrera T could we be the way to go especially if the engine had wee tune from Mr Litchfield.
That’s a great story (if a little expensive!). Fantastic that you drive without a £ thought. That is really the way to do it. Sounds unfortunately like the previous owner may have lacked some mechanical sympathy, for example thrashing it on his commute from cold.
I drive mine as much as I can, but the fact is I just don’t get the time to drive it as much as yourself, hence super low miles (24k) not due to value preservation, simply time. I bought before they went up 6.5 years ago, so the fact they have come down (or that my car may have lost value) loses its relevance once you really decide a car is a keeper, which mine is. I’ve played with so many other options (including test drives discussed on PH) but the GTS has fended off the competition.
991s onward appeal as a different proposition to me. They feel like big GT cars that happen to have super human sports car abilities. Not what I want from my 911 right now.
Great pic BTW!
Recently had a Fast Road Geo done on mine by RPM Technik which was money well spent. Part of me wants to fettle it a bit....LWFW, Sharwerks exhaust or similar etc....but then it’s such a great car as it is I can’t convince myself to do it.

I know what you mean. So easy to spoil something in the pursuit of “improving” it. I’ve done sharkwerks and TPC PASM module and the car had a factory short shift and all good so far. Messing with the engine or suspension hardware would be the next step but not sure I’m up for it. Did remember Chris’ car which looks great lowered but nervous about the suitability on my local roads....
I had one for 4 years from new, followed by a 991 and then a 991.2. 997 variant was the most raw and what I would consider true to it's roots, front end felt light but never once understeered, sound was fantastic and many happy memories. 991 was probably the pick of the bunch in that it was more refined and great as an every day car but lacked the rawness of the 997.
Yep the 'bobbing front end' trait of the 997 very reminiscant of older 911s but entirely in character.
Lost on the 991 of course but perhaps no bad thing on newer cars.

Still surprised the engine went pop. I’d have thought that commute would have been ideal for any engine - warm, low stress. What were the symptoms when it started to go wrong? And do you mind sharing cost if new engine from Porsche?
I’ve owned my FWD PDK GTS since new and it’s now on 97k miles. Initially it was my DD, including a winter wheel set and roof bars for those essential ski trips
Now it’s transitioned to a road trip and track day car following a bit of fettling - girodiscs, ohlins coilovers, PCM, Bose and rear seat delete, OZ track wheels etc. Everything is reversible should I wish to recommission it as a DD!
I have had the car serviced annually since new and never had any problems. It’s definitely a keeper.
Thanks for all the responses, it is indeed the relative rawness of the 997 that holds the appeal.
Interesting to hear opinion on manual v PDK which as usual seems to form the main differentiator/ talking point.
A tidy rwd manual coupe would simply be well out of budget I think although there are a couple of pdk cars in budget.
I’m not really a particular purist and quite like the ease of pdk but I do note the comments about the gearbox not being the most enjoyable / intuitive.
Anyone got a cab? I did think the below looks a bit of fun and is manual:

That's an interesting comment. I moved from 996 Targa to 997C2S to 997GTS. The difference from 996 to 997 is like night and day! 996 certainly did have the bobbing front end and, for me, the single biggest difference with the 997 was the lack of the bobbing front end. Haven't spent much time in a 991, and none in a 992, but I don't recognise the 997 as having bobbing front end...........

Had a Hunter 4 wheel geo recently and this appeared to lessen the effect but irrespective of this the 997 Carreras including GTS understandably have a less planted front end than the 991 not least because the engine in the 991 is located further forward.
Great thread.
Currently looking at upgrading from my 987.2 CS and lot of options out there. £45-50k budget, looking at CGTS and C4GTS, leaning towards cabs over coupe (sacrilege I know).
Will be my first 911, few on the market currently, anything to be aware of in difference in driving?
Also what look out for besides the usual OPC inspection etc?

Personally would avoid the C4 unless you really need the extra grip in winter. A Cab is heavy enough as it is...adding 4wd will make it the heaviest car you could specify.

....and arguably the cab. The 997 coupe is such a perfect car.
I'm an enthusiast and still went against all of the usual PH advice a few years ago by getting myself a 4 GTS Cab PDK. Full leather interior (no alcantara).
It had 24k miles then, I've more than doubled that since which must have wiped out some £15k in depreciation.
I regret none of it (and I'm not a wealthy person, saved for years). Been to Italy twice, Portugal once, two trips round Scotland etc. hasn't missed a beat. Super comfortable, great mile muncher on the boring bits, lovely sound with the roof down.
My advice? Drive a few. If you get on with the PDK and enjoy open air motoring, nothing wrong with that.
Only mod was a centre silencer bypass which I cannot recommend enough to any 997.2 owner. And only upgrade was a cheap £15 bluetooth receiver so I could stream Spotify. Otherwise this 2011 car feels to me as modern as I can possibly want a car to be in 2020.

Depends which generation of 997 is being referred to: 997.1 had a bobbing front end. 997.2 had revised front suspension, and lost the bobbing front end as a result.
Were 997 GTSs built in the same range of colours as the rest of the range, or were they limited to certain colours? Does anyone know of any PTS GTSs in the UK?

It's a good question, and one I've never considered.
You see most white (recession white).
Then black.
But I have seen
Speed yellow.
Metallic blue
Grey
Guards red.
Silver (two types)
Believe it or not Ipanema Blue was a standard colour I believe
Silver was either Platinum Silver or GT Silver.
Have also seen one Amethyst car.

Looks very nice in that photo.
It was a time of restrained colours yet contemporary GT3s came in all sorts! I would be tempted by an unusual colour GTS, as the packaging otherwise was so good also.

Now I come to think of it, there was an Ipanema GTS 4 knocking about an OPC in Scotland a few years ago.
Love that Ipanema Blue.
As an exercise I just went on mobile.de as the biggest aggregator of currently available 997 GTSs. Of 70 cars currently for sale on the platform (most in Germany), 64 are silver (various shades of), grey or black, five are red, and one is dark blue (dunkelblau, it doesn’t say exactly which shade).
Nothing in Ipanema, any of the GT3 RS funky colours, or PTS.
What do people think of this one? I’m going to go back for another look / test drive.
Also i’m conscious it’s quite a small market, what would be a good deal price wise? Car is SOR.

No bugbears. The PDK is fine. It's not as fast as later 'boxes but smooth and fast enough.

I think the manual aspect is a personal thing. I like mine with PDK and wouldn't swap you for a manual. I agree about the centre console though, it lifts an otherwise too dull interior.

What is the consensus on running outside of warranty? Or are there any decent options outside of opc warranty?
Not bothered about a bit of up keep but a box or engine issue is worrying me a bit. Done a bit of research and not heard many engine issues but the odd pdk box nightmare.

Also i’m conscious it’s quite a small market, what would be a good deal price wise? Car is SOR.

Seems about right price wise.

Fixed. The issue is there are so few images of some of the rarer colours as they don't come up for sale.

The seller has said no problem to put it in for a 111 but my concern is that it needs work to be accepted and could be a dear do...
In order for a car sold by a specialist how do you go about getting an approved Porsche warranty? Simply put it in for the 111 inspection?
What is the rate on an annual Porsche warranty or would you be better going to a company like Hartech?

Right now you don’t need s 111 point check....that’s what I was told last week when checking for my wife’s Boxster. Maybe Covid related. Only warranty worth having is a Porsche one....some independent’ s offer there own but will charge you for it if you use them for SOR.
Would you buy one with low miles or one with higher mileage? If you're going to use it all the time a higher mileage would make sense?

Why not put an offer on the lower mileage car. You may get some movement and it should have OPC warranty.
Failing that I'd take the higher miles and enjoy driving it.
If you want a PDK GTS why not the following all on AT:
2011 GTS £55k GT Silver with 40k miles at Cameron Sports Cars.
2011 GTS £47k Blue with 56k miles at Ashgoods.
2010 C2S £44k Silver with 34k miles at Harbour Cars.

That's what I did and have enjoyed every minute. Mine has done 70k now and drives like new.
They are never going to be priceless classics, but they will always be one of the best (if not THE best) 911s to date, so you may as well buy one to use.
Hi all good to see the thread still going!
So went back to see the red car and liked it and having a closer look round it - it was still in amazing condition etc.
However, I then started to research more as I was going to make a serious offer for (research went into overdrive!!) and have had a real wobble due to potential PDK gearbox issues which whilst rare seem to be unfixable without a new gearbox at near to £10k fitted.
I note a couple of people on this thread have suggested it’s a brave move running one outside warranty.
The independent selling the red car said they would put it on for a 111 (at my expense) although they warned that its unlikely to be as simple as pay for the 111 plus the 2 year warranty cost. The opc will be very demanding and it will likely end up being £3-4+ k to get it through and warranties which is a lot in terms of the car value.
They seem genuine and knowledgeable so I don’t doubt their experience on this.
All a bit confusing just not sure I want to take the risk as a £10k bill would be horrific

Why do they think it is going to cost you that? The warranty is a little over a thousand for a year.
Perhaps they know that the car is nonstandard; maybe you should ask them. I would personally not want a modified one.
You don't need a 111 point check at the moment for extended warranty...I have bought one today for my wife's Boxster without doing it. Although I believe there is a rule that you need to the dealer to arrange for it before you buy it...you can't buy a warranty until you have had the car for three months I think

I wonder how that works if, after 3 months, you try to buy a warranty and it turns out it has an aftermarket exhaust, remap and Halfords battery.

Don’t know suspect it may be in the small print....I’ll have a look when I get the policy doc from the OPC.
Couple of questions chaps:
Can you get a child / baby seat in the back of one of these? Don’t have a child yet but could be on the cards in the near term.
Revisiting the opc warranty aspect, is this transferable? I had thought I could get the current owner to sort it to avoid the 3 month wait for me being able to. Rang the local opc today who said not and that the previous owner would get a pro rata refund

Your OPC is talking b
ks!
From Porsche's website (warranty page):
"The warranty is fully transferable providing the car is sold privately or to a Porsche Centre"

Yes, you can get a baby seat in the back.
And yes the warranty is transferable from owner to new owner. Not sure how it works re owner >> OPC >> new owner though.
great thread - hoping to join the fold soon when I complete the purchase of a 997.2 Carrera 2 GTS cab PDK - waiting to confirm a few details before hopefully going ahead.
The comments re the different versions are interesting, particularly the gearbox. A cab PDK will hopefully suit how I want to use the car - it will sit alongside my Vantage V12S (which has the speedshift III box so I'm used to the comments!). I also used to have a 2010 Carrera S Cab and really like it - only got rid to buy the Vantage. The way I'm seeing it is if you want an out and out drivers car a manual coupe is best but if you're more relaxed about the driving you will do and/or its a daily driver then other specs will do!
the one I'm looking at is higher mileage - 69K (not too high for a 2011 car?) but is FSH and looks in good condition so fingers crossed.
interesting re the warranty - it will come with 'a' warranty from the dealer but I think I'll investigate a Porsche one at some point - are there any restrictions re age, mileage?
Love the look of these but hard to justify the premium over an S?
Seems to be £15-20k more for (whats now quite an aged car) the wide body, power kit and possibly CLs.
Feels toppy?

Each to their own. My view is that the 997 is the best 911 ever made and the GTS is the last and best of that iteration.
I was looking at this online as an alternative given My main concern is the pdk box failing:

Looks nice, but no sports seats (not a deal breaker) in stone grey. Price feels high as it's not an ideal spec.
A few pics always help!

OP, I do not think you should pay for any repairs required to get the Porsche warranty on the car but suspect this is a negotiation to come. The cost of the warranty is over and above their price so I would expect this cost including the 111 point check will be down to you.
As to whether the premium for a GTS is worth it only you can decide but these are cars to enjoy and to my mind the GTS adds a few extra HP (23), the widebody chassis to the rwd version, wheels you can't take off without specialist tools and some trim options.
The GTS is a very good package but i'm not convinced it is worth the premium over a Carrera S but YMMV.
The reason I got rid of my GTS cab and have had a break from the Porsche brand. I used the warranty on mine constantly, leaky roof 3 times, rear lights replaced, PDK failure, can't even remember, but it was a list all right...
After my experience of owning 4 Porsches, I would never run one without the warranty. They don't manufacture enough cars to really iron out the stupid issues that volume manufacturers don't suffer from.
So I wanted to get the warranty renewed after 2 years and having put 4k miles on the car pushing it to 43000. Failure of the 111 check due to disc brakes that had 45% remaining (they probably came from the OPC when I bought it with 47%!) and rusty bolts on the exhaust (again, I'm sure they were like that when I bought it), to be replaced by the same s
tty OEM bolts that rusted in the first place. Cost to repair (just to get the warranty) £4000 plus the warranty cost...
I sold it...

Going to jinx it and mine will explode tomorrow for saying this, but I got mine after 4 owners and only 24k miles and after several euro trips it's on 54k miles, has not missed a beat. And I used to live in London so it was parked on the street for 2 years. Also a Cab, never leaked etc.
Had I had your experience it too would have put me off the brand, I totally get it. But forums seem to only contain the horror stories and give the idea that all cars are bad.
I don't run a warranty on mine, each year we set £2k aside instead. So far I have not touched any of that money.
Had my manual coupe 9 years. Not had any bother at all. Didn't extend the warranty after OPC one expired. Used OPC for service stamps and Indi for consumables replacements. Apart from that just cost me petrol and the occasional litre of Mobil 1!!
Most relaible car I've ever owned.
I've used my GTS coupe more in the past few days. It has become my wet weather car and very good it is too for that purpose.
Every time I drive it, I don't want to get out of it and often find an excuse to go somewhere else. This is after about 6 years of ownership.
I've had 911s for donkeys years and the 7.2 GTS is the only one that has held my attention this long. They are really excellent cars.

Yes.
Most cars have them, but there are some 5-stud conventional wheels around.
As far as I am aware, the CLs offer no actual benefit. But they look nice!
They also make life a bit more challenging with regard to punctures, tyre swaps and the like.
5 stud is very rare...if that’s your preference and the car is the right spec go for it. Although I do think they’re less popular...but like Alcantara interior...people want the full GTS kit preferably.
Anywhere that lists the GTS standard features + what were options? Apologies if you guys all know this, been a while since I had my last Porsche but looking forward to getting the GTS.
Shame Porsche stopped doing the cert of authenticity, got one for my 997 C2S and it was quite a nice thing to have

I don't mean to make it sound like a horror story. I just think the warranty is an essential... I don't think the OPCs prep the cars and fix faults before they sell them. They let the owner find the niggles and then fix them under warranty later.
I would love another one tbh...

Can’t remember exactly but GTS standard features
Alcantara Interior (could be changed to leather at no cost)
CL wheels
X51 Powerkit
PSE
PASM
Different front bumper
Widebody rear
Rear seat delete (almost everyone had them put back for free)
Stiffer springs and anti-roll bar
Options
Sport Chrono
Bose
Short Shift Kit
Leather Dash
Heated Seats
Cruise
Multi function steering wheel (hideous)
Sport Chassis (slightly lower and LSD)....very rare
Bucket seats....very rare
PCCB’s...very rare
Audio connection (can’t remember exact name but without this you can’t facilitate Bluetooth connectivity to the PCM so it’s quite important !)

Yes but you only get those central armrest connections if your car has the option....think it’s called something like “Universal Audio”

I really didn't fully appreciated mine and its rarity at the time I had it; Manual, Sport Chrono, Bose, Short Shift Kit, Leather dash, Sports chassis and LSD, Bucket seats and the Audio connection. Sold it at about 12k miles -
It came up for sale about 18 months ago and I though the leather was starting to crack on the seats so I ummed and missed the purchase opportunity - it now resides in Hong Kong unfortunately so unlikely to see out shores again.
Evening chaps,
I have been looking to buy a GTS over the past 3 months and have seen some cars at the current prices hanging around for a while and even some that are being reduced.
Is a full leather GTS with leather dash less sought after than an alcantara/leather interior car?
And are heated seats and bose must have options?
Having read through this thread prices of PDK coupes with under 40k miles are ~£65k do you see this as a true reflection of this car or just in line with used car prices?
Cheers

The Alcantara/Leather combo provides a more luxurious and sportier cabin feel. All leather is a bit one dimensional. Still lovely, but it's a bit cow overkill (metaphorically and literally).
Heated seats are more of a nice-to-have, or squarely dependant if its a daily driver and you are up at 6am (in the car by 6.30/7) and heated seats in the winter would be of value. Depends on your circumstances.
Bose, I feel one is paying for the badge rather than a significant uplift in sound quality.
But you should spec it for you. You'll get as many opinions for and against these options. Spec it for what feels right for you, not the next owner... otherwise from day one it will be compromised to what you'd have ultimately wanted it to be.
It’s a 10 year old car he can’t spec it
I think £65k for a 40k mile PDK is a bit toppy if I am honest….I’ve got a manual car. At the peak of prices three or four years ago a manual with that mileage was £70k and a PDK £10k back. If anything I’d say the price differential has widened between manual and PDK cars since then.
As for spec yes Alcantara interior is one of the desirable options as is the leather dash. I’ve mulled selling mine a couple of times, first thing I get asked is “has it got the Alcantara interior” by dealers….
Sports Chrono is another one that you should look for especially on a PDK car.
Don't underestimate the leather dash. It makes a big difference to the quality feel, in my view - and you're looking at it all the time you're in there.
Have seen quite a few with leather seats etc., but don't know how much it affects resale. I actually preferred the leather seats in my C4S to the alcantara in the GTS.
Think the centre locks are essential as they're a big part of the transformation, although one could argue that about the alcantara.
If you do get one I suggest getting a decent battery vs the lightweight one that Porsche offered it with. My one was constantly draining them flat if I didn't use the car for over a week. Must have got through three replacement ones in five years.
I recon the delta between a 30k C2S and 30k GTS (both manual RWD coupes) is more like £15-25k. The rarity of the latter drives the premium and the market seems to think it’s worth it.
Paragon who are selling both of the blue GTS also just had a 997.2 C2S manual in stock (white one on 23k miles) listed for £55k and it sold within a week of going online. Agree, like for like spec and mileage feels closer to a £20k gap (not £45k as previously stated.)
My 997.2 manual GTS had the plastic dash, and it gave me gt3 / stripped back vibes. I'm clearly one of the few who likes it. I'd be happy with either option, wouldn't weigh into my decision making at all... Both of those Paragon cars look lovely
Another plastic dash long term owner, with no alcantara or CLs and a PDK. And now I find out its a Reading car based on the reg.
Must be worthless, probably why I've had it for 12 years.

You did what?
Are you absolutely insane?
You guys are super brave admitting to plastic dash love in public. I thought I was on my own! Been living plastic for 11 years in my manual RWD coupe GTS (with factory SSK). I only kept it as I was told its dash made it worthless so didn’t bother to try and sell the horrid thing. I’ll go and get it out of the cow field I left it in and see if it still runs

Doesn’t seem to be any price delta between a Carrera 2S and 4S 993 which I always think of this cars spiritual forebearer.

For 997 I have seen a significant premium for 2WD vs 4WD GTS. 4WD is much less unique as a 4S with a power kit gives you a very similar car. You simply cannot spec a 2S to be similar to a GTS due to widebody being unique.

Yup
Looks pretty at first sight, but lacks the ultimate purity that many traditional buyers would be seeking in a nicely spec’d 997:
- Manual rather than Auto
- RWD rather than 4WD
- Narrow body rather than wide body
Colour is a personal choice, but I think that would be a high maintenance colour to keep nice.

Outside of products of the GT Dept I think they might be the best water cooled 911. Manual gearbox and steering are better than anything that’s followed I think…..naturally aspirated engine is important for me so that’s a big part of the appeal. Engine in the 991.1 is great but the gearbox isn’t….
I agree the manual adds something to the unique package but I think a 997 GTS in PDK see is still a wonderful thing. The gearbox hasn't aged badly at all IMHO and for a lot of people the convenience would make it the one to have. No wrong choices here.

I agree with “no wrong choice”…gearbox and rear/4wd are a personal choice
I appreciate a lot of it is perception, but I was told by one chap who'd driven a few of them that everyone assumes the manual in a 997.2 GTS will be this snappy short-throw thing like a GT product might have, but he found it to be a bit unrewarding in the world of manual boxes. Given these cars are a parts bin, I've no idea where the manual box is from, is it a standard Carrera item?
Might have been talking boll ocks, might have been the particular car he was driving, who knows. I wonder if there is an impartial source anywhere.
I'm a happy 2WD GTS with PDK owner. My lack of attention span at school is why I am lumbered with a plastic dash.

Nothing wrong with PDK GTS, manuals are more valuable just because at the time everyone wanted the new tech of a PDK (which hasn’t changed that much) so that meant manuals are rare and carry a greater value. Gearbox is standard Carrera/S but many (like mine) was fitted with a factory short shift. Once warm the gearbox with a short shift is pretty sweet in my view but no better than in say an in period Carrera S with short shift.

Don't talk to him lads, he's a placcy.
Mine had a factory SSK too. It is a better gearbox than the 991 and 992 generation cars IMHO.
The feel of the gearbox suits the car really well in my opinion….a shorter throw gearbox like in some of the GT cars would feel out of place.

That's interesting. To be honest, I didn't know that a factory SSK was a thing. Perhaps the car I heard about didn't have it. Thanks

Mine had a factory SSK too. It is a better gearbox than the 991 and 992 generation cars IMHO.
The feel of the gearbox suits the car really well in my opinion .a shorter throw gearbox like in some of the GT cars would feel out of place.
That's interesting. To be honest, I didn't know that a factory SSK was a thing. Perhaps the car I heard about didn't have it. Thanks
It’s quite a rare option and an important one !
Just found this thread from when 997’s were new…easy retrofit by the look of it. Might be worth checking if the parts are still available.

I've driven a Gen 1 car with a factory fitted SSK. Waaaay too short for my liking. Again, no right or wrong here. But forcing a gearbox into first or second when it's cold, isn't my idea of mechanical sympathy.

Mine never needed forcing but gearboxes do definitely vary between cars.
Easy retrofit, should still be available ftom Porsche but not actually that short in my view. Needs some patience when cold but also seems to get better if the car is used regularly. Wouldn’t be without it on my GTS
So what would the value of a Basalt Black 2011 997.2 GTS 2WD manual with 61,000, one previous owner and full Porsche main dealer service history be right now? It has leather dash, alcantara, centrelocks and no sunroof. The car would have a full 12 months MOT and doesn't need a service for 12 months. Is spring a good time to consider selling?
My guess is perhaps £60k(ish).
Properly presented, I think ‘Collecting Cars’ would find its true value.
Ticks most of the preferred boxes and mileage is not too high.
Black divides desirability, I wouldn’t personally ever buy a black car, but others love it.

Definitely a car i'd put on Collecting Cars - that will sell very well.

could be closer to 70 - bur even with <100 in the uk that are 2wd + manual the market seems to be overly sensitive to miles - I moved my car on last year (2wd manual - white - blah) as I got offered silly money but it had 11k miles on it. great cars - it will sell well on CC.
Yeah, no sunroof is certainly the "preferred" option but i have no idea why.
I love my 997.2 manual coupe with sunroof - the clean lines of the coupe (rather than the cab) but with the ability to tilt or slide the sunroof.
On wet days i always have my sunroof tilted, so i can hear the cacophony going on behind me.
On dry days i often have the sunroof open to enjoy the sunshine and the smells.
Anyone who says they can tell the difference in handling on a public road from a coupe with a sunroof compared to a coupe without a sunroof is lying.
So why the hatred for the sunroof? I'm mystified.

Something else to go wrong. I’ve got a 50 year old 911 with a sunroof…I’ve owned the car for six years…I’ve never used to sunroof because the ball ache if it goes wrong is just not worth it. Mate has a 993 Targa which is obviously a very big/complicated sunroof…the roof on its own is a money pit if anything goes wrong.
I do like a sunroof and have the big glass panoramic roof in both our daily drivers. In a sports car it doesn’t bother me….they were definitely a “necessity” back in the day. I had a 320i company car in the early 90’s…lease company paid for a sunroof because it was worth so much on the residual,

Heavy, ugly, noisy and it gives you at best a tiny glimpse of the sky.
When I was buying a 991 Porsche offered me one for free and said that, if I didn’t have it, I’d wait longer for my car. I waited.

Heavy - an extra 10kg on a 1500kg car?
Ugly - when it's closed you can't even see it (body coloured).
Noisy - when it's closed there is no more noise than on a coupe.
Agree to disagree i think, but we're all different eh?
I'm not a fan of the 911 in convertible form but i know people who love them; for me they're heavy, ugly, and noisy

If you don’t agree, explanation won’t help. If you like them you have a wider choice of cars, because purists tend not to.
911 owners have been known to have them removed and a panel welded in. But have then been disappointed on dewy mornings when the outline of the hole is still visible. Some people really are that anti-sunroof.

Didn't know that was a thing, surely more common on preparing a track car than someone buying for the road and deciding to weld up the roof.
Remember the days when you had someone chop a hole in the roof to install a sunroof, thinking it was so cool

Hi Jsy Reg,
Thanks for your message. I’m naturally cautious about approaches from brand new forum accounts with no real posting history.
I’ve been on PistonHeads for years, even if I don’t post much. If you are seriously in the market for a 997.2 GTS, feel free to share a bit more about yourself and what you’re after.

Hi, thank you for your reply.
I'd attempted to PM you but my status is too low. I have put my contact details on my page profile.
I'm in Jersey (British Isles) and the pool here is very small for certain cars.
I broadened my Porsche search into the UK around 4 years ago. Originally, I sought a 993 coupe & placed various wanted ads for a honest & original car. My postings appear as 'Jersey Reg', although my name is Brendan. I viewed 4 UK cars but sadly couldn't close a deal.
I recently viewed a Jersey 2010 C2S and was delighted with the overall size.
The 997 chassis combined with NA engine would suit my needs very well. The Porsche main agent currently has a 991.2 GTS, however, the TT & overall size didn't work for me.
So, in a nutshell, I'm looking for a decent, honest 997 GTS with full history. I'm retired & will be 60 shortly. My times are my own & I'm happy to travel to view & go from there.
I'd love to hear more about your GTS - please do make contact.

Other than mileage this is very similar to my car - I am knocking on 50k miles. Mine has the plastic dash which knocks probably £30k (maybe even more) off it's value sadly.
Mine is Guards Red and is suffering the, I am told typical, differential colour fade between the bumpers and body. Add to it a dodgy respray job on the front bumper a few years ago to fix stone chips and it's looking a bit sorry for itself. I think a trip to the paint shop is in my future. I have also decided that a wheel refinish in the bright silver like the Turbo S of this generation would be nice.
My car is looked after by Miltech in Ringwood (Hampshire) who I would highly recommend to anyone. The car is in the best mechanical shape it's been in ages, with new dampers, proper alignment setup. Ian is a great mechanic and the sort that will fix little bits and pieces while he's got the car just to make it 'right'.
I'm a big believer in using these cars and have taken mine across Spain and France. They are fantastic touring vehicles with a surprising amount of luggage space. I am taking mine to Geneva in May.
Funnily enough, I often get asked things like "oh i bet it's got loads more feel than a modern one" or "i bet the steering is lovely". But to be honest I've never driven another 911 so I've no idea

Surely that’s way underpriced. It doesn’t have a sunroof so recon it would still be a bargain at £187k…..

Yep nice car that. Paragon and Hexagon do seem to get away with some very confident asking prices. There were cars with half the mileage at that money not long ago.
Based on my own experience I'd be asking a lot of questions about maintenance, as these cars are getting older and do throw up bills. Has it had coolant pipes, shock absorbers, etc. etc. That one's on an ancient set of tyres by looks of it, so that's £1200 off the bat.
Last month I bought a 997 4 GTS in black.
I love the car but not such a fan of the rear light bar.
Has anyone removed this before and is it stupid to consider doing it?
Caught up with a mate who lives up the road, he's selling his white, PDK GTS (2wd) next week, it's going down to RPM.
Knowing what he's getting out of the deal I suspect it's going to be very well priced and he's spent a lot on refurbing all the suspension etc in his time with the car-it's a really good one.
After 6 years, 2 days and c40,000 fun miles (now on 79,000) i said goodbye to Porsche ownership yesterday and dropped the car off at Northway, if anyone wants a great 997.2 C4 GTS Cab that's been well cared for by Ray at Northway then it will be on his site soon no doubt, any questions I will be happy to answer ...
I don't see the point of paying big premiums for a GTS (over a 2S or 4S that is well-specced). Unless one is desperate for the 20bhp offered by the Powerkit.
The GTS black wheels are horrible, as is the alcantara and most seem to have a plastic dash.
The GTS from the 997 onwards is basically a run-out parts-bin special to shift the last few thousand of an outgoing model.

Wow, that's some impressive negativity right there, the GTS centrelocks with polished rims are stunning, the alcantara is another level of special over plain leather, the alcantara touch points are sublime, its ok if you don't get it.
Before buying this i drove 6 different 911's at Paragon and then told them I wanted a GTS Cab, thats how good the GTS variant was to me, and I never regretted it for a minute, I only hope its replacement proves to be as much fun.

The red light bar is the best part of the 4S.
I believe you simply need to swap the engine lid for one from a 997.2 2S.
It might be worth a post on 911Uk, a few 2S owners looking to add the red light bar.

Not sure what you mean as there was no GTS pack for a 997 to the best of my knowledge. There was one created for the 991 onwards but 997 came with alcantara etc. as standard. You could then option out parts of that for leather which made the car less GTS like, but many dislike Alcantara.

A fair enough, well then I mean 'so many optioned out the sportier looking Alcantara'. Plus never seen a UK one with bucket seats. I'm not impressed at all by those that specced them at the time.

I also prefer the sport wheels that were option over the centre locks

Absolutely, and I personally think the folding buckets were better than the 918 “style” so had fitted in my 981 GT4 and we’re in my 987 Spyder , one of the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in

I suggest that is not representative of the numbers that were produced. I was in the market when they were new and buyers wanted alcantara a CLs, because Sport Classic.
Subsequently, leather and 5-stud cars were harder to shift. It may be the reason that leather cars for sale outnumber non-leather. The ones coming to market are not the ones people want to keep, if that makes any sense.
I preferred leather and 5-studs but mine was CLs and Alcantara because it came along at the right price.

They were indeed. But not available on the GTS from the factory. The CLs were a "not the same as the Carrera" thing. The CLs were a bit of a nuisance to be fair and they did not fill the arches. I had a set of GT3/GT3RS wheels for mine.

Thats almost 991.1 GT3 money with a G6... that's mental pricing and no alcantara, loses the GTS specialness.
Even Paragon would have a quiet chuckle at pricing that brave.

Last few seem to have passed through RPM and Paragons hands, id call them and let them know you are looking, Greg at RPM or Jason at Paragon, but you'll need deep pockets.
Yup. Get on the phone to them. I sold mine on SoR through RPM about three years ago…they have since re-sold again this year…it didn’t ever get advertised or even make it to their Instagram account.
