Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

It is an emissions related code, no harm in the short term, but they do not normally heal all by themselves and will cause a state emissions check failure.

And back when they did publish them, a set just for the 986 Boxster came in a large three ring binder for about $1,300..........

This would be a tool for use with 02 turbo (OBDII) as well as 95 993 (with OBDI), the Durametric tool offers an upgrade cable with the round diagnostic connector for use on the 95.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Greetings from Ontario, Canada. I recently acquired a 2002 turbo (tip), took the car for a ride prior to washing and storing for winter. A few minutes into my drive (maybe 5) the dreaded CEL, with the following message, "chech engine drive to workshop". Returned to my place but the car drove fine, no issues with response or anything. I have been thinking about purchasing a scanner and need your opinion on which will provide me with effective problem identification and support? Researched Durametric, is this a brand I should buy or is there another option you would recommend? This would be a tool for use with 02 turbo (OBDII) as well as 95 993 (with OBDI), the Durametric tool offers an upgrade cable with the round diagnostic connector for use on the 95. Thank you for your opinions and suggestions. Mike

POST 2Original post

Unless you want to jump $15K (first year lease) for a PIWIS, the Durametric is you only other choice.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you JFP in PA for your input. Can you tell me where to find a listing of fault codes? Thanks, Mike

POST 4Original post

PIWIS. Since thats stupid expensive, Durametric or Autologic.

POST 5Original post

I called Durametric while I was in the U.S. and they delivered to my hotel a reconditioned unit at a discount. I am no expert on it but the fault codes are in the software which you can download from the web. I would also chime in on the Renntech and Rennlist forums for more information. I find Renntech very organized, helpful and informative particularly with DIY. Cheers....

POST 6Original post

Go to RennTech.org, click on the tool bar "DIY Tools", then chose OBDII for your codes. I would suggest joining. I've gotten some great help on this forum. I just purchased the Durametric Enthusiast tool. It's pretty cool what's hidden away on your cars computer. The Durametric allows you to access all of this information, codes, clearing faults. However I can see there's a steep learning curve to utilize the tool to it's fullest...

POST 7Original post

Durametric works great. They also seem to update the application from time to time....

RennTech has the codes listed online, but what you really need is the code definiton and diagnostics tree, which is another matter as Porsche no longer publishes them (they are in the PIWIS system, but available online via a monthly subscription program). And back when they did publish them, a set just for the 986 Boxster came in a large three ring binder for about $1,300..........

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again for your help, I had the dealer do the scan and they identified 2 faults... P0491 and P0492. I have come to learn that these are secondary air injection issues but that's it. Not sure what to do next, I'm not that mechanically inclined (wish I was), so I don't know if this is something I can tackle or have a tech investigate further? Thanks for your input, Mike

POST 10Original post

P0491 and P0492 say your secondary air injection is not working. Check to see if somone forgot to plug it back in. P0491 Secondary Air Injection System, Bank 1 - Insufficient Flow P0492 Secondary Air Injection System, Bank 2 - Insufficient Flow Possible cause of fault - Electrical fault in power supply or line between relay and secondary air injection pump - Secondary air injection pump relay mechanically faulty - Mechanical fault in electrical secondary air valve - Pneumatic secondary air valve faulty/sluggish - Electrical fault in secondary air injection pump - Mechanical fault in secondary air injection pump or secondary air injection pump blocked - Vacuum system leaking - Air hose to secondary air injection pump slipped off or constricted

Thanks again, I will have to get this checked. I spoke with my tech today and his first response was to tell me how expensive it would be due to the location of the components? Mike

POST 12Original post

SAI systems are buried in the intake area, always fun to get at.

POST 13Original post

I seem to have the same P0492 code on my 2003 TT this week. Car runs fine (from what I can tell) but it just came on one cold morning. I have since driven the car about 100 miles with no issues. I had a dealer reset the scan to see if it returns. Is this something that can damage the engine if I dont get it looked at soon? With the holiday here, most shops are closed for a few days...
