As previously mentioned the car in this thread wasn't a road gt3 with the K400 manthey kit, but a car taken straight from Porsche to Manthey and converted at point of sale (or perhaps prior to first registration) and were designated Manthey GT3 with Manthey badging and therefore also had some bodywork changes, RS carbon bonnets, etc.

Hi all,
New member here! I recently purchased a 996.1 Manthey GT3 and would love to know if anyone has some more information/history on it. It's currently sat in Germany awaiting transit back here to Monaco which I'm very excited about.
The car is currently registered in Finland DER 996 but I believe it was purchased from William Betts of the UK back in 2009.
Before him I think it was one of the earliest Manthey 996 s made. As of today I purchased it from the late Juha Miettinen, so it has quite a history.
If anyone has any photos or knowledge of William Betts I d love to get in touch!
Photos and video to come when I can figure out how to upload it

It's still got a 996.1 rear bumper in those excellent images T.
They’re absolute beauties aren’t they!
It’s currently getting detailed as we speak and the black decals removed to return it to its original glory 🤩

Thanks.
How can you tell its a 996.1 rear bumper? Or are you pulling my leg?
What a brilliant first picture. Hopefully not too much touching up. It would make a brilliant wet film picture. I may have to do another DN event if that many 996 and 997 GT3/RS attend.
I am a little surprised how many there have the rear aero spoiler but not the corresponding front aero ( at least x3).
Anyway fabulous picture. One for the garage AND office
Pip
Ps surely you aren't taking the side decals off too?...?

Mk2 rear bumper protrudes out here :
Mk1 rear bumper has this fine swage line to break up the large area and this part of the bumper doesn't protrude :
From the rear of the car the bumpers are very different. The Mk 1 item is more sculpted between the exhaust cutouts.
I think the Mk 1 bumper looks neater, more organic, smoother, less "bulky" than that on the Mk2.
The Mk2 styling marked the start of Porsche "bulking" up their designs to make them look bigger and more modern.
Mk1 :
Mk2 :
It appears I can t post any photos of the car since I just joined the group, but it still has the MK1 rear bumper. I’m sure somebody can correct me here, but none of the Mk2 Manthey’s received the GT2 style wing or the internal carbon ducting
It would actually surprise me if the car changed at all from this photo, history I have shows it barely being driven the last 5 years.
Can’t wait to have it on the road here

So std mk2 cars fitted with the K410 kits retained std boot spoiler config.
However, a batch of cars were taken straight from the production line to Manthey (pre-registration I believe) and then manthey did the K410 plus other body updates as well. I believe these were then badged as 'Manthey' on the bonnet and possibly on the registration doc too. A friend has a mk2 Manthey car which then does have the GT2 style rear wing and an RS style front carbon bonnet (plus all the K410 updates including KW suspension) and Manthey badges on the bonnet instead of the std Porsche badge.
I don't know if Manthey did the same with any batches of mk1 cars.

It appears that's what has been done with this one too, it has a Manthey badge up front and the full works suspension, headers, single mass flywheels etc etc.
I'll post a few photos of it once I'm allowed

The Mk2 K410 kit didn't utilise the same induction modifications the Mk1 cars required (which was effectively an early 996 Cup arrangement, right down to the Cup air filter) so no internal carbon ducting was required.
I imagine both Manthey themselves and JZM may have recommended the fitment of 996 GT3 RS type cold air scoops on the exterior of the engine lid though :
and which weren't fitted to the "standard" 996.2 GT3 :

The GT2 style carbon wing on the Manthey badged mk2 cars have different intakes holes as part of the uprights which you can just spot in the photos above. This gave a more 'stereo' intake of air on both sides as well as the usual RS style intake. I must admit I don't know if any mods were made under the bootlid to channel this air differently or not...but will share if I find out

Well done HSweeny now elevated to being able to post pictures and it's always good to see detailed shots of modified GT3s. So has yours not got the RS air scoop on the boot ( the stretched 'U' section that according to an American Youtube comparison (996 RS/Cup) adds 15hp. If so is this because air is channeled through the GT2 uprights on the rear spoiler?.
It reminds me that I need to buy and fit one of those 'U' /RS scoops to mine.

Yes I think you can find the photo of mine one page back I just posted it. Air comes through the inlet on the wing uprights and flows directly to the cup filter
Managed to chase down the old owner who bought the car from MR - a few photos from back in the day and present day after a nice detail!
Thanks for your help everyone!

Yes - from what I know many of the earliest Manthey cars were .1 clubsports which had the updated front bumper for better cooling/aero and so the headlights and front right quarter had to go with it. In addition to that many of them also had facelifted sideskirts and rear bumpers too

I'm not convinced "many" Manthey Mk1 cars were the subject of Mk1 to Mk2 bodywork conversions. Manthey may well have converted "some", but I'm not aware (though that's not to say don't don't exist) of any other such cars in the UK converted by Manthey or JZM.
Manthey did however modify the front bumpers on the Mk1 cars by cutting the Cup "exhaust" slots into the upper surface
1999 Cup car :
1998/99 Cup car :
Manthey Mk1 K400 converted car :
(It appears they occasionally employed the services of Stevie Wonder to mark the slots out, then got Ray Charles to bludgeon them out with a blunt chisel and a lump hammer) ... :
https://www.williamscrawford.co.uk/showroom/modifi...
They also blocked off the factory "exhausts" on the underside of the front bumper that dumped hot air under the front of the car, and which created lift, rather than much needed downforce.
The bumper exhaust slots were subsequently aped, solely for aesthetic reasons, on the 2004 996.2 RS road cars.
Manthey also designed their own kit which enabled the centre radiator to be angled backwards and with the aid of a duct (an idea used on the 996 GT2 road cars) more effectively exhaust the hot air up and out of the exhaust slots and thence over the bonnet.
JZM (perhaps at Manthey's behest) also started cutting the Mk1 front wheelarch liners out in the manner of the Mk2 items, this allowed vastly increased airflow to the front brakes, whilst utilising the the Mk2 996 GT3/996 GT2 upper air deflectors (not the flimsy "scoops" clipped on to the front coffin arms) to further increase the air to the front brakes.
There you go, I stand corrected!
Much more knowledge here than what I have
Any idea the rough number of 996 GT3's that had the Manthey full treatment?

For the Mk1 there was no "full conversion kit" as such.
Plenty of cars had the full K400 engine upgrade. I'd guess there are at least 15-20 K400 engine upgraded cars in the UK (possibly more)
JZM did a good line in upselling the Manthey KW V3 coilover kits to anyone and everyone that took a Mk1 996 GT3 to them ...
They also upsold their Alcon brake conversions to the same demographic, likewise the Manthey shortshift upgrade.
But the full Mk1-Mk2 body conversion would have been incredibly rare. And I suspect something Manthey in Germany would have pushed more than JZM in the UK.
My guess is, yours could be the only one.

Henry, don't you mean tilted forwards ie the top is pointing forwards and the bottom towards the back of the car - ?
Also didn't Manthey still do the CF shroud for the GT3 996.2 ?? I thought the one heavily Manthey modified black one (including capacity increase 4.2/9L ??) also had the CF shroud. If not is it just an exhaust and retune with cooling modification on the Mk II - ?

Hi Peter, hope you're well ?
Yep, the top radiator mounts are spaced out and longer bolts substituted. So the top canted forwards and the bottom backwards !!
Correct, the Mk2 K410 was a complete exhaust and ECU reprograming. No carbon under engine cover ducting or mods to the cover itself. I'm not aware of any cooling system mods as part of the K410 kit.
I think Manthey manufactured their own version of the RS engine cover cold air scoop, prior to the factory fitting them on the RS.

Looks unreal in white - how many of these have you come across in your time photographing?
I've managed to do even more background and found out that this particular car of mine was originally owned by Bert Lambrecht who I'm sure many know as one of the drivers for Manthey 2003 - 2008. Anyway I'm well down the rabbit hole with this cars history but it seems to have some pretty exceptional provenance as many of these cars do!

I could be incorrect here - but I think the suggestion is that the cars which were upgraded with Manthey parts whether directly from Manthey or JZM (K400, exhaust etc...) where different than the "full builds" that I was referring to earlier which Manthey designated as MR01 (to my understanding)
The seal grey MK1 you're referring to was also listed as a MR01 car on 911UK
"2001 Manthey Racing MR01 GT3. It was originally registered as a Manthey car in Germany and has all the original papers. It was re-registered in the UK in 2004 and has all the relevant paperwork
- Seal Grey Metallic,
- 420BHP Manthey MR01 upgrade chip,
- Stainless performance sports exhaust (amazing sound),
- Carbon fibre cold air feed to engine,
- 'Cup' aero pack front and rear,
- Carbon fibre racing rear spoiler,
- Carbon fibre engine lid,
- Manthey 'Ring' suspension,
- Six pot brakes with 'Cup' cooling,
- BBS Le Mans wheels,
- Pirelli P-Zero tyres,
- Pagid RS29 Brake pads,
- Leather seats with Porsche crest,
- Racing harnesses,
- Air Conditioning,
- 52000 miles"
I viewed the car when 911 Virgin retailed it many years ago. Cracking car, but I didn't fancy a Leftie.
I took screenshots of their advert at the time and posted them in this thread :
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I'm dubious about the claimed 420hp, unless they did some other stuff which hasn't been detailed, as 420hp is going some from an otherwise stock 3.6 Mk1 engine with a K400 kit.

The car is a road car built on the Porsche 996/GT3 production line, just line any other, but rather than being delivered to the importer of country it was supplied to, or indeed the dealership that would ultimately supply it, it went directly to Manthey, where they converted it. I get that means it's an "officially" converted Manthey car, but I don't really place any great relevance on that. Or am I missing something ?
I believe the Seal grey Mk 1 with a K400 engine conversion and Cup rear wing and Cup engine cover was also delivered straight from the factory and converted by Manthey, from memory.
The parts they fitted were no different to the parts they supplied to JZM and any other Manthey dealers there are/were worldwide.
Or are you merely suggesting cars converted by Manthey have better provenance than a car converted by JZM etc ?

A friend has a mk2 Manthey car which then does have the GT2 style rear wing and an RS style front carbon bonnet (plus all the K410 updates including KW suspension) and Manthey badges on the bonnet instead of the std Porsche badge.
I don't know if Manthey did the same with any batches of mk1 cars.
By the looks of it, the modifications to the Seal grey Mk1 car paved the way for the nature of the modifications to the Mk2 cars, but it looks like the Mk1 used off-the shelf components such as BBS LM's, I suspect a factory Motorsport Cup engine lid, rear wing and air filter assembly :
Most likely early development KW V3 kit valved and sprung to Manthey's specs etc etc.

I’ve had left hooker 911’s for over 20 years never had an issue and actually prefer them. The pedal offset in the rhd air cooled cars is awful and even the later cars lhd feels better.

I viewed the car when 911 Virgin retailed it many years ago. Cracking car, but I didn't fancy a Leftie.
I took screenshots of their advert at the time and posted them in this thread :

I'm dubious about the claimed 420hp, unless they did some other stuff which hasn't been detailed, as 420hp is going some from an otherwise stock 3.6 Mk1 engine with a K400 kit.
My K410 996RS made 428hp on the same rollers I've always used. OEM Mk2 Clubsport was about 405hp

Both are believable figures though the RS slightly less so.
Mk1 Manthey 996 GT3 producing 420hp ? I'm extremely dubious.
The 2008 997 Cup engine from Porsche Motorsport that Matt slotted in the back of JC's old car was rated at 420hp, Wayne Schofield said they generally made 440.
He also said the early 997 Cup engines were rated at 400hp, but he generally saw 420hp.
A late model (2005) 996 Cup was rated at 385hp so call it 405hp. A 2002 996 Cup engine was rated at 380hp :

You see where this is going ...
Manthey may have squeezed 405-410hp absolute tops from a Mk1 996 GT3, but 420 ? Not happening without other mods.
