Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

i saw someones post in another forum about someone they knew installed a kill switch to kill the odometer and speedo whenever they wanted to not rack up mileage...

To my knowledge there is no easy way to defeate the odometer, meaning you can't "just disconnect" it.

Thanks, but like I said, if it was tampered with or perhaps disconnected, there is no real way to tell is there?

A good PPI can run a few hundred dollars but on these cars it is money well spent.

Reading the DME with a PIWIS or Durametric package will tell you a lot, including how many hours run time is on the engine, and how often it was redlined.
Use i got really nervous about buying one of these

When i read the article about a switch being used I got really nervous about buying one of these for simple fear of how easily they could be tampered with.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok Tech's, here's a question many people talk about, but no one really knows the answer too...
I am looking to buy a 2001-2003 Turbo. I have done much research and found about 5 that I like and all have vastly different mileage. I found one that "claims" original super low mileage and in my opinion, unless the car was "tinkered with" I dont believe the miles.
If someone just swapped out the odometer cluster from like eBay to a low mileage car, how can I tell?
Also, if the odom has just been disconnected, does the ecu read it still so I can find out, and am I really rolling the dice??
Running a carfax can help. Also, if the car was serviced at a dealer at any point, you can usually call up the dealer to get the service history and mileage at the time the car went in.
Thanks, but like I said, if it was tampered with or perhaps disconnected, there is no real way to tell is there? i saw someones post in another forum about someone they knew installed a kill switch to kill the odometer and speedo whenever they wanted to not rack up mileage... talk about shady! I just want to know if that was the case, can I bring this car into a dealer and have them scan the odometer or something to see real mileage, os are these cars tracked by odometer only??
Reading the DME with a PIWIS or Durametric package will tell you a lot, including how many hours run time is on the engine, and how often it was redlined. Commonly downloaded during a good PPI.............
As JFP said, get a good PPI as you can get that information from the DME, along with other good stuff that may determine whether or not you want to buy the car.
If you think the odometer is wrong that would make a PPI all that more important as there are probably other things that are wrong. A good PPI can run a few hundred dollars but on these cars it is money well spent.
To answer the specific question, yes you can take a junkyard cluster and swap into a car. The mileage stays with the cluster but reading the DME will tell you whether it is accurate.
To my knowledge there is no easy way to defeate the odometer, meaning you can't "just disconnect" it.
It's easy to tell if its been messed with. Get a PPI at a reputable shop and have them scan the car with PIWIS. The DME will have the mileage.
I wouldnt take it to a dealer, personally.
Messing with the odometer is not as simple as rigging up a switch, btw.
Thanks and good to know. When i read the article about a switch being used I got really nervous about buying one of these for simple fear of how easily they could be tampered with. I have an 95 and my odom stopped working, so I am familiar with trying to sell a tmu car.
