I don't like throwing parts at a problem, but if the engine is out and hard to replace when in and not to expensive, I'll do it if could solve misfires.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I haven't posted lately because the 996 is running fine and been busy with my XJ8 LS swap project. Pics below. I've posted before about getting misfire P301, 302 and 303 codes. It only happens on startup. Have driven with Durametric hooked up and never reoccurs when driving. Car has 77k miles. I'm going to be dropping the engine to install Ultimate AOS, new plugs and new injectors. Suggestions of what to check or replace that may be causing the problem. I don't like throwing parts at a problem, but if the engine is out and hard to replace when in and not to expensive, I'll do it if could solve misfires. Also what hoses if any and other items do you recommend replacing proactively since engine is out.

POST 2Original post

You mention plugs and injectors but not coils? Have you replaced them already? If not, theyre a common cause of misfires. Ask me how I know

POST 3Original post

The proactive subject has been discussed reciently, a serach should get you some reccomendations.

Already switched left and right sides. Same codes.

POST 5Original post

There is always a chance its a flat lifter or bad valve seat. I would run a compression check to help determine if its an internal issue

Bummer! Well, at least you know you've eliminated 3 possibilities...Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

POST 7Original post

Could be as simple as changing your oil. I think PT3 mentioned phase adjusters dont do well with dirty oil or heavy weighted oil.

It's been around since I bought car about 30,000 miles ago. First popped up close to end of 500 mile drive when I brought it home from South Florida. CEL used to come on and go off by itself. Now seems to be on more than off. Mobile1 0W-40 every 3000-4000 miles.

POST 9Original post

Could be a bad variocam solenoid. I had the same issue with misfires along one bank. Swapped solenoids from one side to the other and the misfires went with them. Its about a $350 part and is as easy as changing a spark plug.

Great suggestion. I'll try that and report result. Did you have consistent misfires or just at start up?
