Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 2001
boxster base
2.7 after selling my 2005 last year. This 2001 has 106700 miles currently and supposedly had the
IMS
/RMS/Clutch done at 80k miles. Oil changes reportedly done every 7k miles. Recent oil change by myself had clean filter- no metal or plastic in filter, and oil looked like typical dirty oil, no particles. Other maintenance done to car includes
alternator
, water pump, idler pulley and belt, coil overs and other small things. I’ve performed the expansion tank service,
spark plugs
and coils,
spark plug
tubes, filters, and other small things. Car has original starter, chain tensioners, variocam pads, and timing chain itself.
CURRENT ISSUE- I wanted to get all your thoughts on this video. The
boxster
does this once every 5-10 starts and I finally got it on video. You can tell it is running rough and almost sounds like a bearing of some sort or chain noise and then stops after 5 seconds and idles fine and runs fine. It only ever makes the noise at startup and is very infrequent but kind of concerning. Warm or cold, it will do this- video was taken with engine at operating temp. Only ideas I have are a starter not disengaging, or timing chain tensioners. Before I start throwing parts at it I wanted to get all your thoughts!!
thanks in advance!

Hard to diagnose this way but to my ear that sounded like a chain tensioner.
The timing chain tensioner might be bleeding down when the engine is stopped and isn't doing its job until it sees oil pressure. I believe there might have been a TIB or something about that, but I can't swear to it, or what year(s) it applied to. I believe the tensioner can be replaced engine in-situ, so that might be a good course of action.
Would the timing chain tensioner bleed down that fast? I was starting the engine about every 10 seconds to get this video and catch the one time it did it every once in awhile.
Given the mileage and the replacement parameters it's a good place to begin investigations.
Nope, sold it 2 months ago when I bought a
981
. The car never did it again, very strange. I would assume it was timing chain tensioners though, past 90k miles they all need this done.
